To get toddler DD's hair cut into a pixie?

Is it mean? To make her look like a little boy? She hates her hair being done and there are some really lovely pixie cuts that would work. I have a DS (who was once a toddler!) and his haircut would work on her...

Give her a skin head much more practical.

My Dd has long hair but she's happy for me to brush and style it. She's 3, nearly 4. If she wouldn't let me touch her hair, I would cut it

Some very strange attitudes on this thread. Why can't girls have short hair?! The only thing that would put me off is having to take her to the hairdresser frequently (I have wriggly children). Other than that, seems like a very good idea to me.

Surprised to see such strong opinions on this thread. My dd had a pixie cut as a toddler, her hair is fine and wispy so looked straggly when it was longer, I had no idea that I'd given her such a controversial haircut! She would often have little hair clip or something in it and she didn't look like a boy. I didn't ask her opinion on it, as she was a toddler so obviously couldn't care less. Now she is older her hair is longer as that's how she wants it.

Definitely go for it! I think short hair looks so cute on little girls!

Op go for it, at that age it's about practicality. When she is older and mabey makes less of a fuss brushing or putting it up, she can have it longer. I wear my hair short, many women wear their hair short.

Some 2yo girls don't even have enough hair to have more than a pixie. Are people judging their parents for "making them look like a boy"?! It's fucking hair. Does it even matter if she looks like a boy or a girl? She's TWO.

OP YANBU.

I can't believe some of these comments. She's 2, why would anyone even care whether she was occasionally mistaken for a boy (unlikely to happen if you get a pixie cut) - who spends that much time thinking about the gender of a toddler. Surely she should have a cut that's practical and lets her get messy and run about with the minimum of hassle.

It would be completely different if she was 10 and wanted long hair and OP was trying to lop it all off against her will.

I should add one of the reasons I hated my short hair when I was little is I had old ladies mistakenly calling me a boy

I had very short hair when little and was sick of people thinking I was a boy. That is why I said a bob looks girly. Simple personal experience.

This child is 2, though. Little more than a baby.

I had a short crop as a toddler (because that's all the hair I had), and my older relatives often tell a story of someone referring to me as a boy, and my turning around and declaring, "I'm not a boy, I'm a girl" (in toddler speak, obvs). I have no memory of this, so clearly didn't find it terribly traumatic, and I feel I dealt with it Grin

My cousin's DD ended up with a pixie cut after a head injury at age 2. She likes it so much she's kept it short ever since even though her identical twin has long hair. They both look gorgeous.

Give her a choice - hair is cut off or she let's you sort it out without a fuss.

I got my first pixie cut at 5. It was the late 80s and I rocked it. I was mistaken for a boy all of twice, both by old women despite my wearing dresses. Old neighbours mistook my DS for a girl because he had curly hair, so I think it's just an old people thing.

Girls can have short hair and boys can have long hair, so none of this 'looking like a boy' nonsense, eh? Wink

i think there are a worrying amount of people on this thread who don't seem to be able to see a difference between a two year old and a school age or even pre-teen child

at this age do whatever you think is practical - she probably won't even remember it, as for most adults there earliest real memories start at 3-4 years old

if as she gets older she asks for it longer then you can figure something out at a family, but for goodness sake don't make the poor kid suffer through having long hair done if she hates it because a handful of people think conforming to beauty standards and rigid gender roles are more important than your child's comfort

I saw a toddler girl with a pixie cut recently and she looked fabulous! She had a pretty clip in it.

My mum cut my hair and my sister's hair short without our input until we were about 11 or so. I absolutely hated it.

Agree it is nonsense Rhoda - but just sharing experience as to how I felt as a small girl with (very) short hair - it was the 70's mind you

just as a side note, my 4 year old son has very short hair (eczema, ling hair makes it worse). he regularly gets confused for a girl ( long eyelashes, big eyes, likes colourfull scandi clothes), despite his very short hair (normally wearing jeans and scandi tops with a blue or green background, so genderneutral to boyish clothes)

Give her a skin head much more practical. It bloody is too. I loved Uganda, where every kid has a skinhead and there's no nonsense, nits or weird gendering of hair. Sooooo practical.

YANBU, go for it. I have similar aged DD with long curly hair that either looks beautiful or like she's been dragged through a hedge backwards. No in between.

She hates having us touch her hair and will scream blue murder when we brush it, despite being very gentle.

She's getting it cut much, much shorter tomorrow, partly at her insistence. Long bob rather than a pixie though as she is quite fond of a hair bobble (only if we don't brush it Hmm )

Go for it OP

OMG, it only hair!
Cut it whichever way you/she want - who cares whether at times randoms may think she's a boy! Easy to correct, I really don't get the angst over this.
I had a DS with gorgeous curls and very chubby cheeks who was regularly mistaken for a girl - now that his voice has dropped this is no longer an 'issue' Grin

I have had very long hair, very short hair and any length in between and it made no jot of a difference to my quality of life.

And yes, Uganda is fab. Me, my milky white blue skin and my long, European hair stood out like a sore thumb - v interesting and unsettling being the minority skin colour
