SIL and I were pregnant with our five year olds at the same time. We discussed names and both had a particular girls name we loved. I was due first and she asked me to let her have the name because she said she had fertility issues so it was likely to be the only child she'd ever have. I let her have it.

Now I'm pregnant again and I still adore the name. SIL has gone on to have two further children and we only see them around five times a year at most. I'm tempted to ask if she minds if I use the same name for this baby if they are a girl. They'd have different surnames and wouldn't ever attend the same school or anything. It isn't a really common name but it also isn't unheard of (think Lucy.) It was my grandma's name and this will be my last DC so I either use it now or never.

My brother has 2 younger cousins with the same name, then my sister went on to name her second son the same name.
My brother never said he minded when we were younger, but has made his point 25 years later, by using their other son's name for his dog.

Slightly funny that the names on the "stole our name" threads are often really common every day names that lots of others have too.

Haven't read whole thread, but....
My dd and my 2 cousin's dd's all have the same name. The girls are all named after our beloved grandmother. All 3 go by different nicknames and 2 of them even socialize in the same circles, but the only confusion that happens at family gatherings when they are called by their full names instead of nicknames. The girls love that they are all named after the same wonderful grandmother.

OP

Stop stressing. Call your baby what you want and don't bother the SIL. Be glad it's happy and healthy. As many pps have said there are names that come down families and names that loads of people seem to choose at the same time so you find a class of 5 Jacks, 3 Emma's and 4 Mias all at once. No one owns a name.

I am from a Scottish family . We are tripping over Williams, Bills, Wills and Willies in our family . The rest seem to be called Alec . Smile. We have managed to know who's who for generations .
