To be annoyed that they rejected my friend and not me

I went for a job interview for a good job in my profession. That was the 2nd March. They said they would get back to me 'in the next few days'.
I've never not had a specific date given for the outcome to be given before by they seemed disorganised as the closing date for the position isn't for another week.

Anyway, it's been a week and I've heard nothing.

I've become quite tough when it comes to the job hunt. Not letting myself get upset but I found out my work colleague got a rejection email on a Monday. They've obviously forgotten about me so my name wasn't given to HR.
if someone takes the time and effort to attend an interview (which is a very stressful event) it really shouldn't be too much of a hassle to send a very quick generic email saying they have been unsuccessful.

I haven't emailed to chase up yet but I will do. I just don't feel I should have to.

If you've been for an interview the employer should take two minutes from their day to inform you of the outcome.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet.

You may still be in the mix. Something more urgent may have come up, and recruitment was put on the back-burner.

Follow it up by email.

They might be shortlisting you again.
I've done this myself, when 2 or 3 candidates are great I have a 'no' pile, a 'maybe' pile and then whittle it down further

I dont feel I did well at interview so I'd be surprised if it was that.

If they're waiting until after the deadline has closed I don't mind but they could have said that at the very beginning. And because my friend has a rejection I don't think they are.

They seem to give the job offers before the closing date sometimes at this Council.

It's for four positions. I think they interviewed about 20 people, maybe even more!

Send an email and ask what is happening with your application. As the others say, the lack of answer may not mean a rejection...

We interviewed some candidates a couple of weeks ago, rejected all but the top two then waited to hear from our favourite before emailing the second guy - just in case the first one didn't work out. No news may be good news!

(The time before, we didn't wait and ended up having to retract a rejection...)

I've been that second choice many times actually. Almost every interview I go to I'm second choice and have to wait for the first choice to reply. But there's several candidates so it's a bit different here maybe.

It doesn't bother me if people call up to ask about this.
Sometimes usually what has happened is that someone involved has gone off sick so no decision has been made

FWIW when I had my interview with the company I work for, most people who weren't going to be offered a job got a " no thanks" e mail very quickly. The ones who were offered a job didn't hear for quite some time, presumably whilst the employers were working out what shifts, times and days etc to offer . I was worrying why I hadn't heard anything when lots of people had. No news is good news!

It doesn't work like that. As long as you are polite and professional, obviously.

Nobody rejects the right candidate for sending a follow up email.

When we interview at my work there are normally a few who are a definite no that we tell straight away. Then there are ones that are good but we still have more interviews to do so can't give them a yes or no until everyone has been interviewed.

I would send an email saying something like 'thank you for interviewing me on 2 march. as I haven't heard yet I assume you are still deciding. I enjoyed looking round your company and would very much like to work for you.' (but with capitals where needed)

My guess is that your friend was a No, and you are a maybe. Perhaps they have offered to 4 and you are reserve if any of them say no.

So maybe not bad news then. My friend was rejected straight away. She interviewed on the Friday and was rejected Monday.

I interviewed Tuesday and still have heard nothing.

I will wait it out then.

You might be second choice (1st choice candidate might still be considering it).

This happened to me... I did call and asked the person for feedback on my interview so I could improve and she asked why I needed to improve when I'd been successful. HR hadn't done their job properly and sent me a written offer. I did take the job, HR continued to be pretty rubbish!!

That's really bad!!

Normally the hiring manager calls if you've been successful.

Would someone ever get a job offer by email?

Leave till Monday and send a polite enquiry as to whether they are still considering applicants and can they give you a time frame to hear a response. My current job interview was split as one boss was away when I interviewed and the subsequent one was away when the decision was due to be made. I sent a polite chaser was told about the delay and they got back to me with the job offer three weeks after my last interview - bit poo but its the best job Ive ever had.

It can be difficult but they are human too. Don't stop looking for work in the meantime having said that

They won't reject you because you sent an email asking nicely and in a professional tone. For one thing, it shows you actually care about whether you get this job or not. Why not send it today? I think if your interview was Tuesday, it isn't unreasonable to send an email today.
