To be annoyed that they rejected my friend and not me

I went for a job interview for a good job in my profession. That was the 2nd March. They said they would get back to me 'in the next few days'.
I've never not had a specific date given for the outcome to be given before by they seemed disorganised as the closing date for the position isn't for another week.

Anyway, it's been a week and I've heard nothing.

I've become quite tough when it comes to the job hunt. Not letting myself get upset but I found out my work colleague got a rejection email on a Monday. They've obviously forgotten about me so my name wasn't given to HR.
if someone takes the time and effort to attend an interview (which is a very stressful event) it really shouldn't be too much of a hassle to send a very quick generic email saying they have been unsuccessful.

I haven't emailed to chase up yet but I will do. I just don't feel I should have to.

If you've been for an interview the employer should take two minutes from their day to inform you of the outcome.

I've had two interviews with the NHS where they've not got back to me, one said they would but then didn't and the second just said they only inform successful candidates after interview, they don't need to even ring just a quick email so your not hanging on for days double checking you gave the right phone number and getting excited when an unknown number calls even 2 weeks later! Maybe it's a good sign if your colleague got a rejection but contact them so you know for sure either way

I would interpret all you have said as definite "no news is good news".

I'd wait a week before emailing though, but as others have said I don't think it'll count against you if you do so sooner.

Send a very polite 'I enjoyed meeting with you and am very keen to join your company' which will be reminder enough. No news is good news, if they're definitely sending out rejections. If they do decline, ask for feedback to help you improve.

As a recruiter, we would turn down the flat nos immediately after interview, then get references for our preferred candidates. If a referee is on holiday or we have to chase them, it holds the process up. We then offer to our preferred candidates but wouldn't yet turn down 2nd choice candidates in case a preferred candidate changed their mind or had been offered another job in the meantime. We'd only turn down the "employable but not our first choice" candidates once we've got references and certificates for all the people we definitely want to give jobs to. I'd hang on a little while longer and see which group you fall into.

leopard that's terrible. My profession is fairly well paid so they don't want to alienate any potential future employees so tend to reject unsuccessful candidates.

But my friends who have been for lower paid jobs often find no one can be bothered to let the candidate know how they did.

I think that is quite usual. They decide who hasn't been successful and they are informed. Then the other candidates are looked at and discussed again before a decision is made. I think you should wait and see. I know it's difficult but try to hold on for a bit longer. If you only went on 2nd March absolutely don't email yet.

References were given on the application. I want to know if they've checked them but they're very busy people so don't want to bother them yet by asking

2nd last place I interviewed for I found out I hadn't got it when they re-advertised it! which was extremely rude considering there were only 3 shortlisted candidates so calling us back wouldn't have been a big job!

Twice in the past I've sent the following email after not hearing a couple of weeks later to be told "oh we are going to offer you the job, we just haven't processed it yet" (by which time I'ld taken another job - HA! Grin ) :
"Thank you for seeing me for interview on [date], as I was unsucessful I was wondering if you could provide me with some feedback to help me with future applications"

They also hold off on their second choice until the first choice formally accepts!

I've done a lot if recruiting. After interviews I've done, I've called people are clearly unsuccessful straight away, whilst deciding between the top candidates, or waiting to hear back from number one before rejecting number two.

This happened to me once and I was on a shortlist. So they didnt reject me properly until the other chosen candidates had confirmed accepting the jobs/final checks. But I knew someone had been sent the rejection so it left me a bit uncertain for a while ?could it be that

But definitely second sending them something on the lines of tinseltwins

In my experience, the second and sometimes even third choice candidate don't hear until the first choice has accepted or declined.

Perfectly fine to get it as the second choice. This is a choice done on a cv and an interview, not on three years' worth of work.

This - happens really easily if you're copying from an application form. Nothing wrong with a polite chase if you're waiting to hear.

If you're on a waiting list you might not hear for up to a month. Send a polite chaser.

Don't wait too long before chasing up! My DH was going to offer a job to someone once but she was away on honeymoon and she didn't bother to chase up while she was away (DH had a lot on his plate so didn't have time to chase her either)... Fair enough not to want to while you're on holiday, but while she was away there was a last minute application from someone else who turned out to be an even better candidate and girl-on-honeymoon missed out on the job. If only she'd chased up before this last application had come in the job would have been hers! (Fortunately for her my DH offered her a job in a slightly different role anyway).

Monday would be a perfectly reasonable day to chase, OP. I really wouldn't leave it any longer.
