It's got 25 minutes to go and I'm EXHAUSTED and want to go to bed and will likely be up in 2 hours with the baby anyway....

Tell me it's fine.

Those who find your washing smells after just a few hours in the machine: do you run regular maintenance washes?

I only learned about them a few years ago and prior to that would have issues if I didn't remove the washing within an hour or two of the cycle finishing. Now I run regular maintenance washes and leave the door open between washes, and I get no smells for up to 48hrs after the wash finishes when I put a load on overnight.

bluebellsparklypants · 07/03/2017 22:03

Yep having a baby in your life does change your expectations of housework/stuff
Leave it it'll be fine enjoy your bed

(That said I hate the smell of wet washing that's not been hung up kind of like a mouldy smell but sleep is so much better!)

Kikikaakaa · 07/03/2017 22:04

I don't tend to do it but this is purely because in a flat I do not run my machine late at night or early AM, so it's always on/finished at reasonable time.
I've forgotten about it a few times in my life though and usually rinse it

seafoodeatit · 07/03/2017 22:04

I thought everyone did this? several times a year I'll forget it's in there and re-wash it all 3 times

Kikikaakaa · 07/03/2017 22:06

My DC's school uniforms smell like wet dogs. I hate accidentally washing any of my own clothes in with it because then they smell funny too. I don't know if it's because it's 10% wool kilts or something, it is just horrid

I've tried everything to stop the damp dog smell of these skirts

Elliepurpleflower · 07/03/2017 22:07

I do this lots! Embrace sleep and leave it :)

Purplebluebird · 07/03/2017 22:11

It's fine :)

Imamouseduh · 07/03/2017 22:15

I do this every night. Isn't it normal?

HateSummer · 07/03/2017 22:20

Sometimes I forget my washing for 1/2 days. It doesn't stink. Do it.

Witchend · 07/03/2017 22:21

Overnight is fine. 3 overnights then you may need to rinse it through again.

Of course, I don't speak from experience there. Wink

honeyroar · 07/03/2017 22:23

I agree Witchend!

If your washing smells after a few hours in the machine you need to check your filter or something, it's not normal.

giraffesCantReachTheirToes · 07/03/2017 22:26

As a nanny I experienced many different people's washing machines. Some machines are prone to getting stinky after a few hours others are fine for ages.

pho3be · 07/03/2017 22:39

Of Couse . I always put mine on before bed then hang in the morning

MsPavlichenko · 07/03/2017 22:42

I can stop the cycle and drain. Then rinse later. Worth investigating.

blueamberuk · 07/03/2017 23:24

Oh heavens I must be committing the ultimate sin by setting an overnight wash and often its left hour before I remember to take it out. However neither the washing or machine has never stunk, my machine is 2 years old and there is no scum anywhere in the draw, no black marks on the rubber because I wipe, dry and air my machine. I dont have a tumbler drier, I iron most things anyway these so called no iron shirts look dreadful if not ironed but hey ho so many said its wrong so I must be a big sinner!!!! LOL!

BubbleBed · 07/03/2017 23:37

Mine stays in overnights every night in the spring/summer. Wash on before bed, hang out on line in morning. Never had a problem with smell.

And no different to today when a load went on before work, and then emptied out at 6pm when I got home. Meh. It's a clean machine with cleaner in. It's not going to need another rinse or wash or anything.

Goodasgoldilox · 07/03/2017 23:53

Don't worry - the washing won't know that the machine has finished. Details about the program are on the outside and unless you have been very careless, there is no watch inside so no clue about how long the thing hasn't been in motion.

You can release it all in the morning as if nothing has happened.

NotSureYet · 07/03/2017 23:59

Combination washer dryer is the way to go. Set it to tumble dry as soon as the wash finishes. Best of both worlds!
However, I've never found that the clothes smell if I've forgotten to set the drying cycle. If it does just run another rinse and spin cycle with a fit of fabric softener.

OneSecondAfter · 07/03/2017 23:59

I've done it numerous times and it's never gone smelly in the slightest and it's never been any more creased than normal.

It's just one of those bizarre things that people get het up about for no real reason.

Summerlovin24 · 08/03/2017 00:01

Leave it. Only smells after ages like 30 plus hours. Also I hate it when people say they never iron anything cos they get it out of machine straight away and hang in bathroom. Bloody hell who has timing to take.it out straight away? I'm bunging a wash on then running off to work/school drop off. Iron one shirt per child in morning ( which are well creased since I left them crumpled for too long pre and post dryer)

Coastalcommand · 08/03/2017 00:13

Why would it smell?

ShotsFired · 08/03/2017 06:57

It will "smell" in exactly the same exclusively-MN way a teatowel will poison your entire family if you use it for longer than 20 seconds without boilwashing it at the temperature of a thousand suns.

Hmm
WanderingTrolley1 · 08/03/2017 07:01

I leave it in the machine until morning and it never smells.

pixiehollow · 08/03/2017 07:18

I do it a lot and find sometimes I do need to re wash. I use the unstoppable beads from Lenor and they make the washing smell sooo amazing you can get away with leaving it in the washer 12+ hours with no bad smell 😊

TheHiphopopotamus · 08/03/2017 08:20

shotsfired Grin

I think I live in a parallel universe to MN. I have never, ever rushed to get a load of washing out of the machine as soon as it has finished nor waited up til 1 o'clock in the morning til the cycle has finished. Sometimes, I even forget I've put washing in until the next time I go to use the machine.

My clothes have never smelt either. Or perhaps I'm such a slattern that I'm used to the stench now and everyone is talking about it behind my back.
