It's got 25 minutes to go and I'm EXHAUSTED and want to go to bed and will likely be up in 2 hours with the baby anyway....

Tell me it's fine.

Bung it outside to dry tomorrow, assuming it's forecast to be fine. Blow out the creases and any potential musty smells Smile

Snowflake65 · 06/03/2017 23:29

I just took a wet load out and stuck it in a basket so I could put another load in.

So one wet wash in a basket and another in the machine to both go in dryer in the morning.

I find it's only man made fabrics that smell bad if left.

Originalfoogirl · 06/03/2017 23:31

I do it all the time too. Often to the point I need to wash it again. Overnight is fine. Over two nights, stick it on again on the morning.

like7 · 06/03/2017 23:32

I mostly use my washing machine overnight (a habit from the days when it was cheaper to run with Economy 7?) It never smells when I take it out to hang on the line in the morning. As PP said - maybe the machine needs a good clean out if washing smells from just 1 night. (I put a bottle of white vinegar in mine on an empty wash every 6 months or so)

Angryangryyoungwoman · 06/03/2017 23:32

I fail to see the problem. I do this often

PunjanaTea · 06/03/2017 23:36

Clean washing is not going to go mouldy before morning.

I'm so impressed with all these people who are so organised they can empty a washing machine the second it's finished.

GabsAlot · 06/03/2017 23:37

i find it worse if i take it out and leave it in the basket it smells

if it smells in the machine then that needs cleaning not the clothes

CwtchMawr · 06/03/2017 23:37

I had no idea so many people would stay up and wait for a load of washing to finish! I regularly put a load on about 8pm and don't get it out until after work the next day so 6pmish. Never had an issue with smelly laundry.

JeffreySadsacIsUnwell · 06/03/2017 23:41

Don't any of you have delay functions?! This time of day, this time of year, it's probably going to be fine and nothing a quick wash can't sort out anyway - but anything I put on after about 9pm is with a few hours' delay so it finishes at 7am because I'm not going to get to it before then whatever...

ThreeFish · 06/03/2017 23:41

It will be fine. I do this and bung it in the dryer, no problems with smelly laundry.
I wouldn't leave it wet in a laundry basket though.

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2017 23:42

Of course it'll be fine.

PunjanaTea · 06/03/2017 23:43

I have a delay function but sometimes I'm on autopilot and set the machine off without remembering to delay it.

Such a fascinating insight into my laundry habits Grin

TwentyCups · 06/03/2017 23:45

I wish I had a delay function! Also a tumble drier, I really would love one of those!

Saracen · 07/03/2017 00:04

My wet washing never smells, not in the first 24 hours anyway.

I do pause the machine overnight or when going out, for safety reasons. (I realise that many people don't have that luxury due to their working hours, but I can mostly manage to do all the wash when someone is home and awake, so I may as well reduce the risk of fire.)

So I very often end up starting a load in the evening and then finishing it the next morning. Smells fine.

PointlessUsername · 07/03/2017 00:09

I would go a kio now and hang it up to dry when i was up feeding the baby.

BertieBotts · 07/03/2017 00:29

We have to run ours in the day anyway because we live in a flat and it would be really noisy. The bathrooms are near the bedrooms.

I definitely use the delay function on mine a lot! But our current machine doesn't have rinse hold. It does have pause but I don't like using the pause for hours on end, not sure why really, I suppose it fulfils the same function.

I disagree with PP who said open the door. Never open the door until you're ready to take it out. IME (as a total laundry slattern Grin) it starts to lose its freshness and crease a bit more once you've left it more than about 3-4 hours from the end of the wash, but the musty smell and seriously unironable creasing starts at more like 12 hours. However if you get air get to it it happens faster.

If you want the scent from the washing powder/fabric softener you do need to be quick at taking it out, within an hour or two. It makes a difference, and the faster the better. This is without a tumble drier, perhaps you get a bit longer if you have one.

justilou · 07/03/2017 06:48

Life before laundry. Always.

SquatBetty · 07/03/2017 07:32

I do this all the time - never noticed a problem with it smelling. I also leave washing hung up on the line overnight which is a no-no in MN land!

RuggerHug · 07/03/2017 07:48

I'm tragically very jealous of everyone who is able to leave theirs/forget about it and have it be fine. I always seem to be frantic getting it out and dry as fast as possible since it generally a mad dash of as much as possible when I get a chance! Sad

ShotsFired · 07/03/2017 07:57

Who are all you people whose washing starts stinking if you leave it in the machine one single night?

Seriously, calm the fuck down a bit.

I think I might leave mine in overnight AND then deliberately leave it hung it out overnight the next night too, in case any of you are my neighbours, just to give you the palpitations. I might even put my knickers on the outside-most bit of line too.

Shosha1 · 07/03/2017 07:57

Bloody hell, I'm 58, and have put a wash on before bed ever since I've had an automatic washing machine.

Never smelled, only does that after a few days.

That's what an automatic washing machine is for, to do the wash at a convienent time for you.

coconuttella · 07/03/2017 08:06

Stay up... just think of all the cleaning/polishing/baking you could do in that time! Then you'll be ready to start the ironing first thing before DH/DP wakes so he can select from a full range of shirts!...

Or you can just leave it.

I vote for the latter....

melonyelon · 07/03/2017 08:23

I can report: no bad smell, and DH 'did' breakfast this morning while I hung it out.

So I've got the added novelty bonus of starting the day without Weetabix in my hair. It's gonna be a good day.

Thanks for the various bits of advice.

It's fine. Anyone who says anything different is a lunatic.

Mari50 · 07/03/2017 10:33

Shit- just remembered I've left a wash in the machine. . . . Probably would've forgotten until I went to put the next load in too. Cheers
