Bore I didn't hear the R4 programme but there's a good history series being repeated on BBC4 at the moment called "She-Wolves: England's Early Queens" which is really interesting. It starts with Matilda who should have been the first English Queen (she was William the Conqueror's grand-daughter) but was screwed over by her cousin Stephen. It talks about how the Lords considered her "too ambitious" and not ladylike enough for daring to act as a King would.

First episode is on iPlayer, it's definitely worth a watch.
