Thank you all so much for your insightful posts and informative links.

You're just great, tremendous, winning!

In a similar vein (tin foil hat donned), I always wonder whether they store those heel prick samples they take of every baby in the UK.
illegitimate

I can confirm that those samples are stored for many years (i forget the exact duration). In paediatrics, you can request to have that blood tested for specific diseases like blood disorders if the baby has gone on to have treatment with blood products which muddies the results. So the DNA of every child born in the Uk for the past few decades is in a genetics lab somewhere in the UK. Weird when you think about itBear

Lweji · 11/03/2017 01:30

For reference, the mitochondrial genome of Neanderthals has been sequenced.
DNA has also been amplified from old blood slides. Not even particularly well conserved.
DNA can last a very looooooooooooooooooong time.

I'm sure most of you have seen these, but Trevor Noah going Obama and Scot(ish) Grin about healthcare and that wonderful plan that Paul Ryan had.

Thank you Deejoda - you have finally answered a question I've been pondering since DS1 was born in 2005. My disquiet is justified, it seems.

Lweji · 11/03/2017 08:23

You should check the current UK law on keeping and using human samples.

I suspect that upon leaving the EU, it could become more lax.

I think this article adds weight to class' theory that roguepotus is actually Spicer. In fact this is now my most favourite unlikely, yet joy inducing conspiracy theory. I just love the idea that Spicer is secretly working to bring down Trump through snidey Twitter comments and overt demonstrations of incompetence. Grin

Is Sean Spicer trying to send out a warning to us that he’s in trouble?
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/10/sean-spicer-trying-send-warning-us-trouble/

Lweji · 11/03/2017 08:43

In Thursday's briefing, Mr Spicer opened up with: "Good morning." The problem was, it was close to 1pm in the afternoon.

As the press pack laughed, he explained: "It’s not my fault! It’s on the paper!”

I happened to watch it yesterday and I noticed it. He may be quietly telling people that he's not writing that crap he spouts.
He seemed uncomfortable showing the size of those paper files. That was a Trump thing.
The text would probably be Bannon.

BiglyBadgers · 11/03/2017 08:44

My disquiet is justified, it seems.

If you want some real disquiet remember that our medical records are now electronic. Not just that, but private organisations can pay to have access to medical data. In theory this is just high level, anonomysed data but it is just data protection law and government policy that stops your employer or insurance company being able to access your information.

CrispEater · 11/03/2017 08:44

When Melania recited the Lord's Prayer at the rally in the hangar, I had a similar thought, remembering how it says "... deliver us from evil...."!

CrispEater · 11/03/2017 08:45

Sorry, my post was about the possible Spicer cry for help but a couple of other posts got in between.

No, not just high-level anonymised data: it was individual pseudonymised data that the govt was planning to sell through Care.data. So, your medical record with just your name taken off - but your NHS number (ie your pseudonym) still on it. And your postcode still on it., come to that.

It's a whole huge subject, but Ben Goldacre is good on this. There's a very painful column of he wrote in 2014 at the moment the penny dropped with him.

Ah yes pausing. I misremembered. Should really double check these things Blush

As an apology and sign of my contrition I offer this article that talks about how when you then link up the supposedly anonymous medical data with data from fitness aps and other sources it gets seriously disturbing.

It was interesting this morning listening to Radio 4 on climate change. The world economy is shifting towards environmentally friendly systems and the USA can't avoid that. The US is going to end up having to adopt such systems if consumers and business want that around the world - even if Trump et al don't believe in man made climate change.

Unless the US wants to be uncompetitive. It's a market led economy and the markets will adapt to what the market wants.

Lweji · 11/03/2017 09:31

Data sale is a huge subject (too big for this thread, and I don't want to derail). But you know the description of the pre-2008 period when the sub-prime bubble was inflating - that to a person falling from a 20-story building, for the first 19 stories everything feels like it's fine? With exploitation of personal data, we're still in the mid-stories.

We've bounced off a protruding flagpole with the Cambridge Analytica stuff, but we still really don't know what hitting the ground is going to look like.

BiglyBadgers · 11/03/2017 09:41

This is interesting if you are into the Assange/wikileaks discussions. It is a series of tweets from one of the more 'official' anonymous Twitter accounts that talks about some of the history of wikileaks and the people behind it. It asserts that a lot of the things wikileaks did were the product of work from people other than Assange and went against his ideals. That he has always been a rightwing nut (summarising there), but was previously surrounded by a lot of good people. Those people are now gone and wikileaks is now just Assange, hence the seeming change of direction.

It makes a lot of sense and clarifies a lot of the seemingly contradictory views around wikileaks. I have always seen wikileaks as being bigger than Assange (who has always been a slimy toad of a man), but it seems that is no longer the case.

Of course standard caveats about anonymous sources apply.

BiglyBadgers · 11/03/2017 11:38

We need to get the democrats to start quietly pulling him aside in corridors and telling him how brave they think he is and that they will make sure he gets the recognition he deserves once trump is out.

Did anyone see this gem

Q Thanks, Sean. In the past, the President has referred to particular job reports as "phony" or "totally fiction." Does the President believe that this jobs report was accurate and a fair way to measure the economy?

MR. SPICER: Yeah, I talked to the President prior to this, and he said to quote him very clearly -- "They may have been phony in the past, but it's very real now." (Laughter.)

Sara.
