Nevertheless

'Slavery' strikes deep on me although at some times more than others. My direct forebears were forcibly evicted from their ancestral hearths to make way for sheep. Many others were actually sold to the Americas for lucre.

They were white so probably enjoyed a 'better standard of servitude' than most of the African people who were slaved but even so. Just imagine being forced out of your house, with your children, by force, never to see it again?

Words matter.

Such an interesting thread, I've been reading for a while now and recently subscribed to the nytimes for more coverage.

One thing I see mentioned in articles, comments and threads is that much of his faff and drivel is a means to deflect from the real issue - Russian ties. I'm not so convinced.

He may have Russian ties, or other dodgy stuff in the background, but to think he has the intelligence to strategically distract/deflect like that intentionally is paying the man a compliment. I don't think he was two brain cells to rub together and his tweets are simply infantile rantings and nothing else.

BiglyBadgers · 09/03/2017 14:47

Russia has deployed a prohibited missile, a senior American general told Congress on Wednesday.

I have seen emails claiming that Trump has rolled back protections on drinking water quality as well as allowing mines to dump their waste into rivers. That kind of stuff slips under the radar when you have his Tweets swamping the media.

At a state level the Republicans are quietly starting to change election boundaries which could have a huge effect in future elections. It may be impossible to vote them out of office unless a vast majority of the country wants to do so, and I don't think that majority is there.

cozietoesie · 09/03/2017 14:57

If you've noticed it, Mysterious, I'm sure 'others' have also.

Not if you follow these threads. :)

Yes, he's deregulating environmental safeguards. Making it more "simple" and business friendly, i.e. allowing more pollution.

cozietoesie · 09/03/2017 15:18

The Russians actually called the alleged deployment 'fake news', Bigly? Wink

Lweji · 09/03/2017 15:21

Fake deployment?
Alternative deployment?

amispartacus · 09/03/2017 16:03

es, he's deregulating environmental safeguards. Making it more "simple" and business friendly

Take 3 away for every new regulation?

Some regulation is good though. Especially in the financial sector. Deregulated financial systems are a recipe for disaster.

'United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said all options are on the table for dealing with North Korea, declaring that the hermit regime's leader is not a "rational person."
Haley spoke Wednesday after a United Nations Security Council meeting on the latest provocations from Kim Jong Un, including the launch of four ballistic missiles on Monday.'

Who else has replaced North Korea with USA?

cozietoesie · 09/03/2017 16:08

There is, potentially, bad trouble there. This may be the first time that 45 will meet someone who genuinely doesn't care what 45's position is.

I know what you mean though, ami.

Neverthelessshepersisted · 09/03/2017 17:08

ah, ok

I have looked at the exact words/the video now and it is really distrubing.

Natsku · 09/03/2017 17:15

I've noticed that Trump's tweets are getting less and less likes as time goes on Grin

Lweji · 09/03/2017 17:18

I'm sure even staunch defenders can't keep up. Grin

BiglyBadgers · 09/03/2017 17:45

A 'beautiful picture'. What the actual fuck...This is people's lives he is messing about with. Hmm

People will realise what it's like when it's explained to them and when they get to use Trumpcare.

I am glad we have the NHS. It's not perfect. Not at all. But it seems a lot less complex than all this insurance stuff.

Roll up, roll up, get your alternative facts here...

New EPA chief denies climate change is caused by carbon dioxide.

It will end in a beautiful picture

Got this on FB today.

Sad day for public education in the United States of America. Punishing our most important natural resource, our children.

The U.S. House of Representatives has introduced Bill 610. This bill will effectively start the school voucher system to be used by children ages 5 to 17, and starts the defunding process of public schools.

The bill will eliminate the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESSA) of 1965 which is the nation's educational law and provides equal opportunity in education. It is a comprehensive program that covers programs for struggling learners, AP classes, ESL classes, classes for minorities such as Native Americans, Rural Education, Education for the Homeless, School Safety (Gun-Free schools), Monitoring and Compliance and Federal Accountability Programs.

The bill also abolishes the Nutritional Act of 2012 (No Hungry Kids Act) which provides nutritional standards in school breakfast and lunch. For our most vulnerable, this may be the ONLY nutritious food they have in a day.
The bill has no wording whatsoever protecting special needs kids, no mention of IDEA and FAPE.

Some things the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESSA) of 1965 does for Children with Disabilities:
-ensures access to the general education curriculum
-ensures access to accommodations on assessments
-ensures concepts of Universal Design for Learning
-includes provisions that require local education agencies to provide evidence-based interventions in schools with consistently underperforming subgroups
-requires states in Title I plans to address how they will improve conditions for learning including reducing incidents of bullying and harassment in schools, overuse of discipline practices and reduce the use of aversive behavioral interventions (such as restraints and seclusion).
Please call your representative and ask him/her to vote NO on House Bill 610 (HR 610) introduced by three Republican reps.

Please copy and paste this post (rather than hitting "share") so it isn't limited to the friends we have in common. Thanks for advocating on behalf of our nation's youth.

I agree Ami the NHS had its problems, but the principle it stands for, that everyone no matter who they are and how much money they have should have access to the same level of healthcare, is something I would fight tooth and claw for. I know it doesn't always work out this way, but the aim is clear. The treatment I receive will be decided by a doctor whose aim is to get me better and do what is best for me. It will not be decided by an insurance exec whose aim is to get himself a nice fat bonus at the end of the year.

I just can't get my head around the idea that people fight for a system that leaves some unable to access basic healthcare while others have the best of everything. For me it is morally repugnant to base access to treatment on how much someone can pay. How can a country as wealthy as America think that this is OK? I'm afraid I can't help but conclude but those who continue to defend the American system are simply unpleasant people who care about nothing apart from themselves.
