To think most Dubai naysayers are hypocrites

Not at TAAT more a TAA lot of threads.

Repeatedly on MN people say they'd never go to Dubai because of Human Rights issues at the same time as announcing they'd much rather go to do yoga in India or sightseeing in Morocco.

It seems rather hypocritical and an attitude that is very particular to Dubai and I suspect something to do with being perceived as trashy not disagreeing there

So if you have objections to Dubai on moral grounds where do you go? Do you apply same strict standard to other countries.

I've often asked on those threads where people do go but never received much of a response.

I won't avoid travelling because of any perceived moral high ground. Travelling often acts to broaden the traveller but also the people of the host country. Further isolation and less interaction isn't the answer. However I won't go to somewhere like Dubai because they are wrecking the environment in order to lure tourist money. Dubai or any country for that matter won't experience a culture change because a bunch of westerners hoiked up their collective bosoms and didn't book a holiday. But what I do love about mumsnet it that everyone has a different line in the sand and by discussing the issue perhaps we all see a bit of a different angle.

Iceland is a pretty safe destination in terms of human rights. I've been there. Thanks for asking!

Seriously, I've travelled a fair amount around the world, and Dubai is the only place I'd feel totally happy to walk around alone at 3.00 a m. Certain that there would be no importuning, no hassles.

OCSockOrphanage - Really ?? There is a great deal of difference between travelling the world and working overseas. I've done both and I've also worked in Dubai.

I've also been propositioned in Dubai on my way home from work at about 5.30pm on Sheikh Zayed Road by an Arab who stopped his car on the slip road. It's also the only place that I've been walking past a car park outside a shopping centre and seen a man sitting in his car wanking. Again an Arab. It's one of the only places in the world that once I'd seen that I wouldn't dream of reporting to the police.

Are you male? Because then perhaps your post might make sense.

Though I heard there's a problem with male homosexuals molesting attractive young men in some Arab countries ...
(Homosexuality is technically illegal in those places, but being alone in a room with another male is not, so, kinda hard to prove.)

Dubai is an extreme case. People are not being hypocritical to avoid it for a lesser evil.

I love Dubai! I think every country has its skeletons in the closet. I have friends that work there and love it and I know plenty of people who have grown up there. It's not for everybody but neither is the UK
