To not want to use the gift.

Now I don't want to sound ungrateful but MIL is very excited about new arrival which is lovely. But the other day she brought us a Moses basket with out us seeing first and well it so not what I envisioned. It silk and covered in lace looks like something straight out of queen Victoria's nursery.
I don't know what to do DH doesn't want to hurt MIL feelings and has already told her how pretty it is and how much we like it. But I really don't and know he is not a big fan either,
I do appreciate the kindness of the gift but I'm a bit upset I didn't get to pick this out myself.
I have attached picture so you can see for yourself.
What can I do? I can't not use it now?

FFS just buy another swimming suit

Oh FFS that poster clearly wasn't talking about just a swimming suit, she just wanted to pick some things and had let other stuff go before the swimming suit.

Some posters just wanna win at being SOOO RELAXED about everything

My DD is 14 - she has her own taste in clothes and hates anything I like (fair enough) I am under no illusions that baby clothes she'll like (in many years time hopefully) will be different to mine -

I have no intention of forcing my tastes on her -

Ask or give them some money - easily done!

llangennith · 04/03/2017 22:08

I'm old and old fashioned but that Moses basket is beyond hideous!

S1lentAllTheseYears · 04/03/2017 22:10

TinselTwins get it! Perhaps I wasn't explaining clearly enough. OK a coat or swimsuit isn't the same as a moses basket or a Christmas stocking or Christening outfit. I get that. But they are things that you only really need one of at a time and, depending on your relationship with the giver, they could be offended if you just go out and buy another. I am not "#Hardwork" but my mum (who I love dearly) has a tendancy to take over without realising and maybe the OP's mil is the same (and maybe not, of course, I don't know the woman and may be massively projecting!)

wizzywig · 04/03/2017 22:10

Sorry op. It looks like a fancy toilet dress thing

S1lentAllTheseYears · 04/03/2017 22:12

Tinsel gets what I was trying to say, I mean Smile

FairviewRosie · 04/03/2017 22:12

Mine went bloody loopy when put near the moses basket ( it was a fairly plain yellow cotton one). Ended up as a toy basket.

HarryPottersMagicWand · 04/03/2017 22:17

I wouldn't use it because of the SIDS risk and the fact it's not cotton. Full stop. It could look really pretty (it doesn't) but I wouldn't risk the safety of my baby just to appease someone (whoever it was) who bought it as a present.

ChaircatMiaow · 04/03/2017 22:26

OP, in the photo I can see the cat lurking about.

I bet she'd love to get her nails into it and shred it to pieces. What an unfortunate turn of events that would be (if you were kind enough to leave it out for her).

Moonbear10 · 04/03/2017 22:32

That is spectacular. I've never seen anything quite like it...

fabulous01 · 04/03/2017 22:39

Would she know if you don't use it. As a heads up mine still buy crap things. I have tried many times to ask for money for their savings account but the crap keeps coming.....
When I mentioned cit bumpers weren't recommended I was called a neurotic pregnant woman..... and don't start me in second hand mattresses!!!! so I am not sure explaining silk etc is bad.
But I know mine never slept in Moses baskets for long but.... I wouldn't use this.

But in al seriousness try and have a word or get bloke to do it

dontbesillyhenry · 04/03/2017 22:55

I've gone from laughing uncontrollably to feeling sorry for MIL to howling once more.
I asked my ten year old if it was a nice Moses basket- his reply was 'urghhh'

But granny to be is probably just excited and over enthusiastic. Does she have all her faculties?

BertieBotts · 04/03/2017 23:37

One of the SIDS guidelines is to avoid loose fabrics and excess fabric/padding because it can be a suffocation risk.

Also because of the assumed age of the item the mattress would be a risk - SIDS guidelines specify new mattresses to be used only.

Lastly again because of the age, you couldn't be reasonably sure that this item hadn't been in the house of a smoker. Smoking increases the risk of SIDS but we don't know why. So I wouldn't want to put my baby to sleep right next to fabric which likely had smoke particles in it even if they were 20 years old.

There are genuine safety concerns aside from the personal taste issue.

First thought on seeing it was that it looked like a coffin.

Like other people I think I would say that the midwife has raised concerns about its safety. Could you possibly use it to put cuddly toys in? You'll have loads (so it would hide some of the fabric) and could get used for make believe games when your dc is older

kittybiscuits · 05/03/2017 10:06

When I first looked, I thought it was a tinfoil moses basket for a space alien baby!
