To think DD's punishment from PE teacher was draconian?

DD is in Year 10 and came home quite annoyed about a punishment she got in PE for something very minor in the first place. Her teacher made her get changed into her PE kit at lunchtime (without any tracksuit in the cold wet weather), and run laps around the football pitch for all but the last 15 minutes of the break (so she could eat), much of it whilst the boys were having football practice, who apparently found it quite funny. Is it overreacting to think this is a bit out of order? I might not have been surprised when I was at school but I can't help be a bit annoyed, seems a bit like it was intended to embarrass her and unnecessary.

Francis "That's because she was the only teenager who misbehaved."

If no one else was joining in, how did she disrupt the class?

@moonlightshadow1 How did the meeting go?

moonlightshadow1 · 03/03/2017 17:29

Thanks all. It was productive thanks, spoke to her tutor who had been filled in in full about it (as all detentions are reported to tutor) and talked to her about it. He said she was very apologetic (all answers "yes sir", "no sir") and that the PE teacher had said she has had cause to talk to her before. As I said they'd clashed before - I have now been told the impression was that DD felt PE was perhaps "beneath" her (along with a handful of others) due to her being sporty, playing in the hockey team, and so PE seems a "lower level", this has been made clear to her is unacceptable and something I'll also be speaking to her about as arrogance isn't anything I've seen from her before or accept. The PE teacher felt she needed to make a point of punishing her in front of the class after her silly comments on Wednesday for reasons some teachers in this thread explained to me too, and said that once DD was given a very stern talking to on the "uncrossing her legs" issue she was very compliant in sitting up straight and clearly not wanting to cause any more issues. Did mention my discomfort at the location of her having to do laps, her tutor said he saw my point and that he'd feed that back to the PE teacher about that then get back to me on it. I also made it clear throughout DH and I supported the school taking action where they need to. I asked if any other teachers had issues with DD in case anything had happened I'd not been told about and was reassured that they haven't and her academic progress continues to be good and her tutor has no other worries.

I'm glad it went well. Sounds really productive and good response from the school.

The only last thing I will say is as expected from most of the teachers on this thread, it would seem you don't know your daughters behaviour and attitude to learning as well as you thought you did. She has been disruptive before and she thinks it's beneath her. That's pretty tough for a teacher.

I am glad it went well though. I think it's been a good resolution all round. Hopefully our daughter can learn to behave now.

crystalgall · 03/03/2017 17:47

Blimey not 'our, your daughter Grin

I agree fair play to you for being honest about the response.

Good show OP!

Dulcimena · 03/03/2017 17:55

Thanks for the update and for sharing so honestly, OP. I had been wondering what the school's side of the story was. Sounds as though it was a very productive meeting. Do you feel more comfortable about the situation now?

Have a lovely weekend.

stonecircle · 03/03/2017 18:26

I take my hat off to you op. You've taken a very balanced and thoughtful approach to the discussion on this thread and not risen to any of the more extreme responses. Sounds like you handled the discussion with school just right. I'm sure with you as a role model this will just be a temporary blip in your DD's behaviour.

You may remember up thread that I said my DS had been pulled up on his behaviour in PE at a similar age. I think he also found PE boring as he has always played sport to a high standard. It was just a temporary and minor blip with him too Smile.

moonlightshadow1 · 03/03/2017 18:33

Thanks all. Yes, definitely feel better having talked to DD's tutor and aired my concern regarding the laps, whilst still hopefully backing up the school. DD has now had her stern talking to regarding her attitude in PE, which I don't think she was expecting on a Friday evening Grin She's now having to help prepare dinner rather than tap away on her iPad (as many parents of teenagers might agree this is quite a punishment in itself). DS has also found this whole episode quite funny.

stonecircle I did see your post, sounds like your DS had a similar attitude to my DD in PE and by the sounds of it the other pupils who do at DD's school are similarly sporty! Not that it's the case of all sporty pupils of course but is interesting. I will ensure this is a temporary/minor blip with DD as well as best I can - I think with the incident in PE, quite a strict telling off from her tutor which she definitely took meekly and now from me, it should do. DH will also have a word when I've filled him in in full about what DD's tutor said.

Thanks all for the responses, hope people understand my DD isn't a complete horror and is generally well behaved and liked, but clearly let herself down with PE and especially this week. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend! Smile

Glad you feel good now, and you have spoken up for your dd. Don't be too hard on her, she sounds very normal.

I hope the PE teacher is advised some better ways to respnd to comments about farts.
