I'm not really a dress person and I've been looking at coloured dresses/non wedding dresses for my wedding this summer, which is not going down well with family...mainly my mum surely I'm not BU?

I worn pale pink - I loved my dress. Wear whatever you want - that is far more important than following any traditions or what anyone else thinks.

Getting married friday, im wearing jeans n top, partners wearing jeans n t shirt :-D cant wait

EatsShitAndLeaves · 01/03/2017 19:43

I don't like white - personally I think it washes a lot of people out - especially me!

I designed my own dress in pale gold and had it made by a local dress maker.

At the time most dresses were strapless and very full. The antithesis of what I wanted.

If you can't find "your dress" it's worth thinking about getting one made - it's not as expensive as you might think. I bought the silk direct from the manufacturer.

Picture is cropped but you'll get the idea.

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips that dress is absolutely amazing!

It's your wedding, you wear absolutely what you want. I have seen more colourful dresses in winter weddings than summer ones, but there's no rule. You don't even have to wear a wedding gown, there's so much more choice in evening wear. You can look at the Oscar ceremony dresses for inspiration

MusicToMyEars800 · 01/03/2017 21:47

these are the sorts of wedding dresses I would wear, I would have hard time deciding which colour though Grin

Your wedding your rules. It is also very hard to look good in white unless you are Pippa Middleton. Her sis certainly looked awful in that lace monstrosity, which was a shame.

My friends wife always wanted to get married in red. So she did. Big meringue and it looked great. Bridesmaids were in white. Do what u want

LoupGarou · 01/03/2017 22:40

OMG @daddyorchipsdaddyorchips your dress is absolutely stunning, do you mind me asking who the designer is please?

We had a cathedral wedding and I wore a white dress. I wanted a midnight blue/black dress, something like the below, but DH wanted a big white fairytale wedding and got a bit upset when he found out I wasn't planning on having a white dress, he did try to hide from me how upset he was, and he now admits he was being ridiculous, but I found out.

I never wanted a white wedding dress, so I didn't get married in one, I went for a blue dress instead with cream flowergirl dresses, and my chief bridesmaid was also in blue. It suited me much better than a white dress ever would have.

IckyPop · 01/03/2017 23:49

YANBU! My dress was a dark maroony plum type colour. And I had my hair cut and dyed black for my wedding, so quite different to the usual white and romantic long curls in the hair. It's your wedding and you should wear what you want.

IckyPop · 01/03/2017 23:54

Just RTFT - my bridesmaids were in a off white. In fact one of them was mistaken for being the bride at our reception Grin

oleoleoleole · 02/03/2017 00:05

I wore a pink one in the 80's!

VeryFoolishFay · 02/03/2017 00:31

Got married at Christmas too. Felt fabulous in red silk!

Wow, love that red corset dress, how fabulous.

I don't like white, i do t look good in it. I wore a long cranberry red strapless sheath dress, super sleek and simple lines but a very rich color. It was a bridesmaids dress from monsoon, then tailored to fit me. No bridesmaids but dh wore a kilt, his tartan is blue with red in it so pics look good.

Wear whatever you like and feel wonderful in, it's your day.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 02/03/2017 01:01

Yanbu at all! Again, white is typical but most certainly not standard.

Mine was silver. Still wedding-y but not traditional.

Bridesmaids? Just pick a colour and tell them to wear what they like. It's the easiest way.

tabbymog · 02/03/2017 05:46

I love your dress, too, Polly. Gorgeously medieval and very flattering.

Feckitall · 02/03/2017 05:55

DIL got married in a beautiful black dress...she looked stunning...bridesmaids black and white...DS wore an dinner suit with straight tie...the groomsmen wore dickie bows..red flowers...

BalloonSlayer · 02/03/2017 07:08

Everyone's wedding dresses they have posted on here are absolutely beautiful!

I would have posted to everyone "xx I love your dress" but there are so many I would be here all day!

Glitteryfrog · 02/03/2017 07:10

My mum got married in a 70s pale pink dress and her mum married in green so there's a bit of a non conformist theme here

My mum got married in blue.
She would have been Hmm if I wore a big white frock

category12 · 02/03/2017 07:14

I wore red.

nannybeach · 02/03/2017 08:08

Its YOUR wedding wear what you want. A couple of my friends got married in long gorgeous red dresses. The only reason I got married to 2nd H 18 years ago in cream, long dress, jacket, was because I first got married in 1970, (er, rather quickly) You had to be 21, we are 19, he came and lived in my "parish", so we could marry, it wasnt very exciting, no fancy clothes. Wanted the 2nd time to be special, had found a great trouser suit in a boutique (are they still called that) which had great one offs, but they couldnt get it in my size. Thought it would be great because I couldt wear it afterwards.

maggiethemagpie · 02/03/2017 08:46

Mine was a cream bodice with a dusky pink ombre skirt... I've never been one for convention and my engagement ring is unconventional too.

In fact tell me I have to do something and I usually want to do the opposite.

NotdeadyetBOING · 02/03/2017 09:11

Queen Victoria was criticised for wearing a white wedding dress as it was considered boring and bland. The tradition of white only started then. YOUR wedding - YOU choose. Good luck!

Enko · 02/03/2017 09:19

White is very modern as a wedding dress. I have a photo of my grandma and grandad getting married. He in a smart suit she is in a black dress with a white lace fastening colour..

She once told me she felt like it was the most beautiful dress ever. They were married in the 1930s

NeverNic · 02/03/2017 10:03

My dress was Antique Ivory, but officially it was more shell / pearly if that makes sense. Cream, white and off whites weren't flattering for me. I very nearly bought a blush pink dress but decided pink as a colour didn't really match my personality, even though the colour was flattering. While a true bright colour wasn't what I wanted, what would be wrong with you picking a colour? It doesn't invalidate your wedding certificate because you weren't in bright white! White dress evangelists wouldn't have appreciated mine, but it was very definitely bridal.
