I'm not really a dress person and I've been looking at coloured dresses/non wedding dresses for my wedding this summer, which is not going down well with family...mainly my mum surely I'm not BU?

I wore a purple silk satin dress I found in a charity shop and felt amazing, (it cost £17.50.) It has since been taken to another charity shop because I'll never be able to wear it again, but it did what I needed it to. (I've cropped the picture, but my lipstick matched my dress too, and I wore gold eyeshadow to match the gold theme of the decorations.)

I wore a pale oyster pink. It was lovely.

OP, it's your wedding dress. You absolutely definitely must please yourself when choosing it, and no one else.

HerRoyalNotness · 01/03/2017 00:18

daddy. That dress is absolutely gorgeous!

Some beautiful dresses! Thank you Smile
One thing that's been mentioned is what will the bridesmaids wear? But surely something in keeping with my dress will be ok?

Thank you Blush

OP, for bridesmaids I'm actually going with pale cream/Ivory. They are all happy with that, it suits my bridesmaids' colouring and it really makes a non-White wedding dress pop!

Polls and Daddy - beautiful dresses.

I've been to a ton of weddings and each bride, young or old has looked just lovely. Be true to yourself and you will look radiant.

Good luck OP

Yanbu. My dress was red and white polka dot, no big skirt, not remotely wedding dress like. Register office ceremony however, not church

KC225 · 01/03/2017 08:35

Sapphire that is a beautiful colour wedding dress. Very elegant

Paddingtonthebear · 01/03/2017 08:38

My dress, that's not me wearing it though

Wear what you like and have the bridesmaids in either the same colour and a different dress or a matching/contrasting colour as you like. I actually really love the idea if a bold wedding dress colour and pale or white bridesmaids.

I always thought the whole site thing was down to Queen Victoria - she wore white, everyone copied her because fashion, and now it's traditional. Before that you just wore your nicest dress if you were having a big wedding.

I heard of a bride to be whose mother chose the dress for her. It needed altering to fit, however the bride to be hated it. The day she went to be measured for the alterations she went on her own and burst into tears and told the shop owner that she hated the dress. Fortunately the dress hadn't been altered at all at this point so the shop owner asked her to choose another. The bride picked a pink silk strapless dress with a laced corset back. The bride went to all subsequent fittings alone, the shop kept her secret, the dress was collected the day before the wedding, the bride kept it under wraps, got dressed with her bridesmaids help. The first time her mother saw the dress was when she came downstairs wearing it.
By which time it was too late to do anything about it.

I adore all these different dresses and love the fact that women are wearing what they feel fabulous in.

I'd wear blue or turquoise - white makes me look as if I've been exhumed!!

(It does look great on some people though)

It's your wedding, wear what you want. Show your daft DM some of the gorgeous dresses on this thread!

TwatteryFlowers · 01/03/2017 09:24

If your mum isn't paying for it, and even if she is, it's your day, your body, your choice. I wore purple for my wedding.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/03/2017 09:28

My dress was red and gold. We got married late autumn so matched autumnal colours

THirdEeye · 01/03/2017 09:37

I didn't even wear a dress. ALL the stuff surrounding weddings is totally unimportant.

slug · 01/03/2017 11:12

I wore black with a pea green shawl as a veil(ish).

My bridesmaid wore whatever she wanted to. Actually DH was a bit disappointed as she had been threatening to wear a halter neck mini (she's quite booblicious) but in the end she turned up in a floor length brown/gold dress.

MusicToMyEars800 · 01/03/2017 11:16

Yanbu, wear a colour you love and that suits you Smile I won't be wearing white if and when that day comes around Grin
PollytheDolly gorgeous dress!

missperegrinespeculiar · 01/03/2017 11:19

Go for it OP! Mine was ivory, have since been to two weddings where I loved the dresses, one was burgundy and gold, the other one was white, but with colourful, hand painted flowers all over it. They were gorgeous! I now wish I had gone for something bolder!

annielouisa · 01/03/2017 11:20

DD4 wore a stunning dark red dress it was very Gone with the wind, she looked great. I think you have to feel good in your dress.

ThisisrealityGreg · 01/03/2017 11:23

Wear what you love.... I got married in a sage dress because it was the nicest dress i found. Was happy to spend more but it was only £35. I said the bridesmaids could also choose their own dresses - they both chose the same dress from debenhams by complete coincidence.

My mum got married in a 70s pale pink dress and her mum married in green so there's a bit of a non conformist theme here Grin

GummyBunting · 01/03/2017 17:18

I've picked an ivory dress because I normally wear dark or bright colours so it will be vey different and special for me to wear white. Although I've got a very colourful flower garland to go in my hair to give it all a splash of colour.

awesomeness · 01/03/2017 18:51

Coloured wedding dresses are becoming more and more normal

Plus....its your day where what the hell you want, dont let your mum live her dream wedding through you.
