To have taken back my walnut whips?!

I've NC'd as this is a bit embarrassing. I rarely shop in M&S as I can't afford to but went in this lunchtime as they often have a few reduced items. I spotted two single packet walnut whips on the end of an unused conveyor belt - they had various reduced things on there. I picked them up and had a look at them, saw they were 30p which is fab! I love the 'whippy' bit and their chocolate is amazing IMO.

My phone rang and I put them back down on the end of the checkout (it's hard to explain the logistics), but so they were close to me. It was an important call so I couldn't really rush the person off the phone as I saw this happen - a couple aged about 60ish who had been looking at said reduced items nearby took the walnut whips and put them in their basket. I was so pissed off, as this couple were near me when I was looking at the whips and I only put them down to get to my phone. They were right next to me so I thought it was obvious I'd 'claimed' them.

Ok I'm a bit ashamed but I subtly followed them and when the phone call finally ended and they were busy sifting through some pasta products I took the walnut whips out of their basket and didn't look back!
Quickly got to self checkout and paid for them then half-ran out of the store and to a shop a few doors down.

I feel really guilty and can't bring myself to eat them, am I a horrible person?!

Were they old? You say 60ish? Or were they a bit older? Sounds like a nasty thing to do to a couple who might not have realised they were your biscuits - yours before you paid for them or put them in your basket, but obviously, they were definitely all for you! I wouldn't have done this and don't think it is funny but each to their own.

Sugarlumps333 · 01/03/2017 21:08

clandestine old and frail couple - is that the part that is meant to be funny? Why is that funny?

Idontevenlikewalnuts · 01/03/2017 21:09

Agh I know Livia, I do feel bad.

Betty good idea actually, I will look for an opportunity to do this :)

They are wasted on you showofhands!!! So jealous!

Ah thank you littleladybird

I have the image of the OP sneaking behind the couple with the facial expression an outraged Mr. Bean would be proud of, sticking her outstretched fingers into the basket of an old and frail couple and then running away, hiding behind the stand with Percy Pig jelly sweets.
I hope that all m&s employees among mumsnetters are checking their cctv footage for the recording of the OP right now.

Ha yes there was a Mr Bean element to it, I know what you mean Grin

Sugarlumps I don't know what to say...I'm partly feeling really ashamed and guilty, and partly like it doesn't REALLY matter in the big scheme of things. I wouldn't do it again and am not proud of myself. Yes I reckon early sixties but don't know why I mentioned their age range as isn't really relevant.

Haha this is funny. I wonder at what point they realised the walnut whips were missing.
I once spotted someone trying to switch their milk with the one in my trolley as it "had a longer date".

Sugarlumps333 · 01/03/2017 21:17

I have the image of little miss piggy dying to get home to get her gob around her 2 packets of walnut whips while an unsuspecting elderly couple (I suspect they were older than you are making out) are wondering what happened. It kind of does matter - it's rude, and you wouldn't have done it to a 20 something year old I bet. That's why it's rude. Enjoy your walnut whips, don't eat them all at once!

Oldraver · 01/03/2017 21:21

Your mistake was buying two single ones (didn't even know they did them)

You should of got two triple packs that are usually on offer

PageStillNotFound404 · 01/03/2017 21:23

Just you wait. You won't be laughing when Walnut Whips everywhere are kept in locked cabinets behind the counter with the contraband cigarettes and paracetamol.

Alright! I get it now, I feel shit about it but it's done, and they're long gone now...I've learnt from it and it's NOT in any way my proudest moment. I'm having a shit time in some ways and those bloody whips were the highlight of my day yesterday. That's not to say I don't realise that the couple might have had their own problems of course and were looking forward to them too...hence the guilt. If you read all my posts on here I mention several times I feel bad about it.

Miss Piggy though? - well we're both blonde and greedy so yes, good comparison!

I don't know why I didn't spot this last night but I would just like to say that I was furious when we got home and my walnut whips weren't in the bag. I thought DH had scarfed them down whilst I was driving and he thought I had whilst he was putting the car away. He insisted on searching the bins for wrappers and now we aren't speaking.

(please can you send me the walnuts)

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/03/2017 21:30

You do know that Walnut Whips can turn on you if youare not very careful, right? Tis true. Lost a tooth to one once. Long time ago but since then I've been mighty careful around those sneaky delicious little critters.

wanders off wondering if being chosen then discarded in favor of phone then stolen and restolen again is enough to set them off on a tooth stealing rage?

My old boss once referred to something as being 'like the hazelnut cluster on a walnut whip.'

Me: 'Do you mean the walnut?'
Cue dawning realisation as suddenly it all makes sense.

Mrsmadevans · 01/03/2017 21:35

I don't blame you one bit !

bigTillyMint · 01/03/2017 21:36

Grin I am just loving the image of you stealing back your Walnut Whips!

But now I feel I have to go into M&S to find a salted caramel one to try.

Idontevenlikewalnuts · 01/03/2017 21:38

kaitlinktm - LTWSB (Leave the walnut stealing bastard) Grin
Walnuts have been packed up in a Tesco food bag and ready to go to you as we speak.

Oh no 2017! That's awful, see I knew the walnuts were bad news.

Maggiecate that's hilarious!

Eat them both immediately. You're my kinda girl!

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox · 01/03/2017 21:46

M&S will be Hmm at the sudden increase in sales of their walnut whips!

F1GI · 01/03/2017 21:48

Fucking brilliant op!

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 01/03/2017 21:52

Oh lighten up Sugar

I think it's hilarious Grin

MycatsaPirate · 01/03/2017 21:58

I really wanted to post as the woman from the couple saying that you had stolen them from my basket. But I don't want to make you cry.

So, just in case this happens again Op, if you get caught, very quickly open said walnut whips and lick them. Then defiantly put them back in your basket, poke your tongue out and walk to the checkout.

You snooze, you lose.

Supermam · 01/03/2017 22:05

Fab! Chutzpah! Brew

tillytown · 01/03/2017 22:23

I can't believe you actually did that, I'm impressed you didn't get caught, but omg, those poor walnut loving people! Grin

Viviennemary · 01/03/2017 22:27

You stole them from their basket. How awful. You had replaced them on the shelf so they picked them up.

TWSAES · 01/03/2017 22:40

I work in the factory that makes these and its not Thorntons......
