To have taken back my walnut whips?!

I've NC'd as this is a bit embarrassing. I rarely shop in M&S as I can't afford to but went in this lunchtime as they often have a few reduced items. I spotted two single packet walnut whips on the end of an unused conveyor belt - they had various reduced things on there. I picked them up and had a look at them, saw they were 30p which is fab! I love the 'whippy' bit and their chocolate is amazing IMO.

My phone rang and I put them back down on the end of the checkout (it's hard to explain the logistics), but so they were close to me. It was an important call so I couldn't really rush the person off the phone as I saw this happen - a couple aged about 60ish who had been looking at said reduced items nearby took the walnut whips and put them in their basket. I was so pissed off, as this couple were near me when I was looking at the whips and I only put them down to get to my phone. They were right next to me so I thought it was obvious I'd 'claimed' them.

Ok I'm a bit ashamed but I subtly followed them and when the phone call finally ended and they were busy sifting through some pasta products I took the walnut whips out of their basket and didn't look back!
Quickly got to self checkout and paid for them then half-ran out of the store and to a shop a few doors down.

I feel really guilty and can't bring myself to eat them, am I a horrible person?!

Grin this made me laugh so much, OP!! Best thread ever Smile You're so much more talented at this than me - if it was me, I'm sure that I would've been caught taking out of the other shoppers' basket...!

StealthPolarBear · 01/03/2017 06:28

"
We too have a cut price sweet shop nearby which sells a large bag of M&S whips for £1. They are fine, but walnutless."
Wow they sound lovely. I don't like walnut but the rest sounds nice

AstrantiaMajor · 01/03/2017 07:17

Last night I tentatively knocked on the door, and repeated verbatum the M&S Tuesday phenomenon.

Things went quiet for a minute and I thought about making a hasty retreat when she accused me of having an affair with her DH. Worse still she said she thinks he shared them with me. Then the shouting started again, he said the whole thing was a set up. He thought he glimpsed someone reaching into the basket while they were in the supermarket. He said I stole them to give them to his wife and this 'Spooky Tuesday' is a load of bollocks.

Anyway I can't post anymore as I have to move away. Seems the Police don't believe in Spooky Tuesday or walnut whip whipping either.

Idontevenlikewalnuts · 01/03/2017 09:26

Astrantia - right, that's quite a lot to process but you did a good thing by attempting to resolve this issue. You're quite right, the Tuesday Phenomenon aka Spooky Tuesday is a very real thing (usually only in m&s but we obviously have evidence of Tesco and Waitrose events)

That's unfortunate that you got accused of being her DH's bit of (marshmallow) fluff Blush she must be a real (wal)nutter!

I might hand myself in today I think to the police and fully expect a verbal whipping.

Isn't anything acceptable for walnut whips?

I want to drive there to get some today now!!!

originalbiglymavis · 01/03/2017 09:30

I love walnut whips. I once bought a six pack from m+s and decided to eat one on the way home. I was stuffing the last one in my mouth and binning the box outside our block as my nextdoor neighbour came bouncing down the steps and spotted me.

I'd do it again.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/03/2017 09:36

You probably are being a BU but this is hilarious nonetheless 😂

Got visions of that couple now wondering where the the bloody hell their walnut whips vanished to! Grin.

OP, my mother frequents M&S & her favourite chocolate is walnut whips, is this you mum? Wink

Jenniferb21 · 01/03/2017 09:38

OH and if you feel so bad you can't eat them can I give you my postal address? Yum yum! Lol

Bantanddec · 01/03/2017 09:46

Tbf they did the same to you!

Idontevenlikewalnuts · 01/03/2017 09:54

Haha originalmavis I don't blame you, they're too irresistible!

Sorry Jennifer my guilt was bad yesterday but not enough on the evening to pretty much inhale the Whips Blush I need more now, like an addict Grin

Also good read that lots of other people like them too and understand why I did what I had to do!

idontevenlikewalnuts please don't ever let this thread end. And don't confess, there is only room for me in the cell. Did I mention things got whipped up to a frenzy when the police officer thought I called him a walnut.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/03/2017 10:03

I hope this thread makes it to classics.

I've been poorly for a few weeks since what feels like since forever and you didn't half make me laugh OP. Grin

I have done this. Thought "I'll just have the one",and then before I knew it I'd eaten the six (didn't even enjoy the last two . . .Sad). Then - because My Flappy knew they were in the cupboard and would have commented on their disappearance, I had to go out an buy another pack.

Totally worth it

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/03/2017 12:36

HappyFlappy couldn't you have just lied explained that some walnut whip loving thief swiped them from your shopping basket too? Grin

HappyFlappy · 01/03/2017 14:44

Had I only known that such miscreants existed Pixies I probably would have er, I mean, I would never NEVER lie to DH about anything so important.

It's one thing to tell a fib about entertaining the milkman, but the walnut whip is sacred.

Well, it was a bit naughty of you, but hey, nobody died.

When they got home they may have said to each other, "Let's eat those walnut whips! Oh, where are they? That's strange, I think we're going berserk."
At the same time you were pushing down your gullet.

SauvignonBlanche · 01/03/2017 17:22

YWBU but only for not eating the walnuts.

Idontevenlikewalnuts · 01/03/2017 17:27

idontevenlikewalnuts please don't ever let this thread end

Haha I will try :) in the spirit of that, here are some facts and trivia:

  • This is probably well known but apparently M&S chocolate is made by Thorntons. I always wondered as they're quite similar, but checked and it's true.
  • In the past they've made walnut whip cupcakes (going to look out for these)

morningconstitutional Shock When you put it like that......I have a weird feeling of disgust but happiness due to how amazing they were!

Just heard that this is the lead story on Crimestoppers tonight. They are calling it the "Walnutgate enquiry"

clippityclop · 01/03/2017 19:03

Does anyone else remember when M&S walnut whips had tow walnuts, one in the bottom as well as on top?

HappyFlappy · 01/03/2017 19:12

I would like one of these for Easter ^uk.pinterest.com/pin/50735933272674715/^

They . . .they're . . . BEAUTIFUL!

I remember the two walnuts clippity - one inside the bottom, nestling in "whip", and a decorative top one.

Bugger - now I'm going crackers for walnut whip and have given up chocolate for Lent

HappyFlappy · 01/03/2017 19:14

Is there a photofit Astrantia? I'm looking forward to the reconstruction. It will be interesting to see in any MumsNetters grass up the OP ring in with information.

Youallpissmeoff · 01/03/2017 19:32

Am impressed with your resolve OP

I put down my heavy basket and went to get something nearby (not out of sight). When I turned back I saw a man surreptitiously going through my basket and he was taking a bag of salad leaves out of it. I was standing quietly behind him and asked what he was doing.

He did that silent thing where you pretend you weren't doing something, you didn't hear the person and don't acknowledge them standing there. Just carried in as though it never happened.

He left my leaves though.

BadToTheBone · 01/03/2017 19:47

That couple will be heading for the divorce courts, each one thinking the other scarfed two.

thunderbuddy · 01/03/2017 19:52

Just read your op to dd who laughed so much and said you are a genius Grin

My Dad loves walnut whip and have an M & S near them so I am seriously wondering if it was my parents as my Dad is deaf and my Mum is rather distracted so would have taken without realising.

I am so hoping I get a story of missing walnut whips at the weekends.
