To have taken back my walnut whips?!

I've NC'd as this is a bit embarrassing. I rarely shop in M&S as I can't afford to but went in this lunchtime as they often have a few reduced items. I spotted two single packet walnut whips on the end of an unused conveyor belt - they had various reduced things on there. I picked them up and had a look at them, saw they were 30p which is fab! I love the 'whippy' bit and their chocolate is amazing IMO.

My phone rang and I put them back down on the end of the checkout (it's hard to explain the logistics), but so they were close to me. It was an important call so I couldn't really rush the person off the phone as I saw this happen - a couple aged about 60ish who had been looking at said reduced items nearby took the walnut whips and put them in their basket. I was so pissed off, as this couple were near me when I was looking at the whips and I only put them down to get to my phone. They were right next to me so I thought it was obvious I'd 'claimed' them.

Ok I'm a bit ashamed but I subtly followed them and when the phone call finally ended and they were busy sifting through some pasta products I took the walnut whips out of their basket and didn't look back!
Quickly got to self checkout and paid for them then half-ran out of the store and to a shop a few doors down.

I feel really guilty and can't bring myself to eat them, am I a horrible person?!

Convince yourself that this couple might have diabetes so you are in fact , saving them from themselves Halo

There was a post a couple of years back where someone lifted an M&S dessert from a trolley that the poster had ordered on Food To Go ........it didn't end tidily Grin

Reminds me of a time years ago, Waitrose used to do a really nice foccia...rosemary and salt or something. I went in to get one. Got to the bread bit and a woman is standing pretty much in front of them and talking to her husband "I can't see the rosemary foccias, where are they"

I stood at the side of her, saw there was only one left, lunged my arm in past her and grabbed it and scuttled off. She was screeching at her husband "she's taken the last one, she's taken the last one".

Possum

Great work OP! Something I'd feel like doing in your position but which I'd likely be too timid to do.
Enjoy, you deserve to!

PossumInAPearTree · 28/02/2017 21:08

I want a walnut whip now.

katymac · 28/02/2017 21:09

Do they make dark chocolate ones - I bought one from the co-op & the whip bit was almost jelly like in consistancy

Are M&S ones nice and gooey?

lorelairoryemily · 28/02/2017 21:09

I love that you did that!!! Brilliant Grin

Idontevenlikewalnuts · 28/02/2017 21:17

I live near one of the chocolate factories that makes the M & S walnut whips - you can buy 10 for 50p. Just sayin..

Really? Shock Do they let you buy them at that price? Wow, I'm jealous!

Possum - that's brilliant, and don't know why but it just sounds so 'Waitrose-y' Grin Bet she was fuming...

Katymac I'm not keen on dark chocolate so never really noticed as not been looking for them, but I think they might do a caramel one with a bit of dark choc on the top?

Ooh yes very gooey. Very fluffy, very gooey sighs contentedly it may have been worth it after all

Grinhaha you cheeky little whip thief!!

MikeUniformMike · 28/02/2017 21:18

Brilliant! I love it. I am tempted to put a few full price things in the baskets of such people.

Littlepiglittlepig3letmeIN · 28/02/2017 21:26

You realize you can never ever shop in that M & S ever again.
The next time you go in, there will be two angry 60 yr olds pointing at you and screeching 'that's the Walnut Whip Thief (think scene out of The Body Snatchers)

AstrantiaMajor · 28/02/2017 21:29

Please can someone advise me whether to call the police. The couple next door are accusing each other of eating all the Walnut Whips. He said he definitely put them in the trolley and she must have dropped them. She is saying he has eaten them in the car while she got petrol. It is getting very very loud, threats are being made.

ThomasRichard · 28/02/2017 21:38

Grin These stories are hilarious! YANBU in principle (and very funny) but those things are vile. I used to love them as a kid though.

SumThucker · 28/02/2017 21:43

Actually made me laugh that, you sneaky caah Grin

Fozzleyplum · 28/02/2017 21:45

I kind of admire your gall,OP. I'd probably feel guilty, too, unless I was sure they'd known that they were "your" walnut whips.

We too have a cut price sweet shop nearby which sells a large bag of M&S whips for £1. They are fine, but walnutless.

PuntasticUsername · 28/02/2017 21:48

Omg OP you are my new hero and role model.

I don't even like Walnut Whips but dammit, you've got style.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 28/02/2017 22:12

YABU for taking walnut whips when you don't like walnuts. Surely a walnut whip without a walnut is a Tunnock's tea cake Confused

Applebite · 28/02/2017 22:15

Hmmm it depends.

If it was the salted caramel one, YANBU.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/02/2017 22:18

No - that's definitely weird behaviour. If it's not in your basket then it's fair game for anyone. Confused

Oh no!!! Please can you go round there and convince them that they didn't actually put them in the basket - it was a momentary break in reality, very common in M&S on a Tuesday lunchtime (scientifically proven), and the best thing to do now is forget all the about the non existent walnut whips and eat their lovely pasta that they were eyeing up earlier ;)

I know what you mean but they seem like night and day to me, not keen on teacakes and they don't have the essential fluffiness of an M&S whip. So I'd never steal a teacake Grin

NiceMoustache · 28/02/2017 22:27

Where the hell are these shops. I don't even want the walnut.
