Why are the republicans so keen to allow trump to keep his tax returns secret?

229 House Republicans just voted to keep Trump’s tax returns secret

SuburbanRhonda · 28/02/2017 13:21

I can imagine that sounding ok in the context of an interview. Just sounds odd coming from the current President, especially when he's making unfounded allegations against Obama.

Passive-aggressive, some may say.

SanFranBear · 28/02/2017 13:22

I don't even understand tax returns but I bloody well want to see Scrotus'. Purely because he obviously doesn't want us to see them.

And yes - president for life Grin The Emperor will always be able to use the title but hopefully sooner rather than later, his will always be preceded by 'disgraced former'....

LouiseBrooks · 28/02/2017 13:22

The person interviewing Dubya called him President Bush

Once a President, always a President. It's a courtesy that sadly will be extend to Trump.

LouiseBrooks · 28/02/2017 13:23

"be extended". Typing too fast, sorry.

AcrossthePond55 · 28/02/2017 13:37

But Cozie, I have the bigliest upset. I mean my upset is HYUGE! No one does upset like AcrossthePond55!

(I've decided to refer to myself in the third person, like Scrotus. It makes me bigly impressive, don't you know.)

DH and I are debating whether or not we'll (be able to) watch the speech tonight. Even with Gin I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it!

BTW, those budget shortfalls? Yeah, he's going to 'make that up' because he's going to increase our GDP by 2% 'or even more'! Yeah, that's real fiscal responsibility, that is. Just like one of us planning our household budget because we 'just know' we're going to get a pay rise. Fucking idiot!!

cozietoesie · 28/02/2017 13:41

I'm so lowly.

I abase myself before your Bigliness! Grin

cozietoesie · 28/02/2017 13:50

PS - you need to watch that speech for all sorts of reasons. Have Gin to hand. Smile

CaveMum · 28/02/2017 14:13

The "we'll increase GDP" thing reminds me of the SNP's "back of the fag packet" calculations on oil revenue during the Independence campaign Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 28/02/2017 14:21

Sigh. I know. It's very important to stay informed.

Not sure if Gin will do it. I don't suppose we have a 'joint' emoji?

I'll probably have to watch in the bedroom. DH yells so loud at Scrotus I won't be able to hear a word, not that that's a bad idea!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 28/02/2017 14:27

I don't suppose we have a 'joint' emoji?

I don't think so, but with some kind of end times political event horizon fast approaching, I think we could make a compelling case to MNHQ. Do you think we should also request a bunker emoji for our post-apocalyptic/all out nuclear war posting at the same time?

Lweji · 28/02/2017 14:35

Someone should tweet this link to him:
www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2017/02/28/tweeting-pwc-accountant-blamed-oscar-best-picture-blunder/

This is what happens when you tweet at the wrong times. Wrong envelopes at the Oscars and wrong countries with no terrorist attacks because you don't listen to Intelligence briefings.

What fun news we will have to wake up to tomorrow on this side of the pond Confused. I suppose us brits at least won't have to go to bed with the nightmare still playing in our minds.

Lweji · 28/02/2017 14:42

How much does he think he can increase GDP by?

2008/2009 - financial crisis
2010 2.5%, over inflation
2011 1.6%, under inflation
2012 2.2%, over inflation
2013 1.7%, over inflation
2014 2.4%, over inflation
2015 2.6%, over inflation
2016 1.6%, under inflation

It is long accepted etiquette for former presidents to continue to have the title President, but only the actual current president should be addressed as Mr. (or Madam) President. Interestingly, when Eisenhower left the WH, he wanted to go back to General (as is the custom with high ranking retired military) rather than use President.

Dumdedumdedum · 28/02/2017 15:05

Oh FFS.
DeVos celebrates Jim Crow education laws

Dumdedumdedum · 28/02/2017 15:11

Sorry, Bigly, I missed your link when I checked before posting mine.

helzapoppin2 · 28/02/2017 15:27

Can somebody, who is better informed than me, explain what the outbreaks of anti Semitism in the USA are all about? Can I conclude that Trump is neither encouraging or discouraging them?

Dumdedumdedum · 28/02/2017 15:34

I'm not that well-informed helza, but am assuming that a lot of Trump supporters (like the KKK) are Christians with Nazi leanings and have forgotten that Jesus was a Jew. Trump is not doing anything to discourage them.

PausingFlatly · 28/02/2017 15:42

It's possible Steve Bannon (one of the main people behind the orange orang) is not neutral towards Jewish people, helza.

"Florida Legislature at ‘open war’ with state Supreme Court
...
But Perry sees the bill as just another way to poke at the court and said it isn’t constitutional because one branch of government can’t tell another how to do its job.

“It’s a power play that they know they can’t win,” Perry said.

But he also noted there have been many other times lawmakers have ignored the constitution when passing legislation.

“The constitution trumps statutory law every time and it trumps them every time. They don’t seem to get it!” he said."

A bill where justices are forced to step down when they turn 70? I wonder whether 45 will comment on that one? Wink

woman12345 · 28/02/2017 17:02

How can kids read To Kill a Mockingbird in US schools now, if Jim Crow is back.

AndHoldTheBun · 28/02/2017 17:05

Anti Semitic bomb threats etc- as I understand it, a number of Jewish organisations have stepped up to support the Islamic community by offering them space to worship, or sanctuary, if they, or any other targeted immigrant communities need it.

The Jews are, of course, acutely aware of where all this might end, which is why they are speaking up. Sadly it's making them a target for right wing nuts.
