To be baffled by and disappointed with the amount of transphobia on MN?

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 26/02/2017 11:02

I know I'll get flamed for voicing my opinion on this, but I don't care.

I just don't understand why there is so much hatred for trans people on here.

Yes, some trans activists are extremists and no I don't agree with them, but should all other trans people suffer because of them?

I get that there are issues that need to be addressed, as highlighted by recent items in the news and recent threads (which prison should trans people be sent to, can a MTW be a girl guide leader and various others). I don't have a solution for these, but I feel that as a society we should work together to make it work, rather than just spout hatred and insults.

It is especially disappointing as there are a lot of people in the trans community suffering mental health issues, often as the result of how they are being treated, and MN is usually a safe haven for people with MH issues.

I used to enjoy reading the Feminism chat (or most of it anyway), now almost every thread on there is transphobic Sad

Most of us here are women, a lot of us are from ethnic minorities, or have a disability, a lot of us have been discriminated against, we know what it feels like so why do it to others??

I think you are entirely correct, Alltheglitters. We all try to be understanding of people's personal issues, but there are limits. As a woman i will not support an ideology that threatens my own rights and boundaries. And I'd like to hear a good reason why this should be expected of me.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/02/2017 14:50

Only got to page 8 so far

Regarding the word CIS , my understanding is that its used as a descriptor to state that someones gender identity matches their sex

I am not CIS, i do not believe in gender except as a social construct

I renounce and reject the 'gender identity' that society places on me

MercyMyJewels · 26/02/2017 14:50

Bit
My response was that you were being thin skinned was to this comment by you:
"Please, feel free to call me transphobic and goad me you are simply illustrating the point the OP made." where the point that you made would have been seen by the TRAs as transphobic, therefore highlighting the problem in your argument.

And I say my dear a lot

BeyondUnderthinking · 26/02/2017 14:51

The contradiction is interesting. Campaigns like Let toys be toys alongside Jazz Jennings being "proven" a girl by undoing their babygro

*"People with penises"
The disgust felt towards men, particularly MtF by a section of MN posters is palpable. *

That language was used because it is becoming very difficult to describe who you are talking about when you are accused of being transphobic if you suggest a trans woman is not a woman (as you have just done). It no way implies any disgust, just trying to define a section of people.

NiceMoustache · 26/02/2017 14:54

I agree with everything that venusinscorpio has said.

I find it slightly odd that a bunch of left leaning feminists have the same attitude to the trans issue as Donald Trump but as someone said on another thread, I guess your enemy's enemy is your friend.

Good grief.

TheOnlyLivingBoyinNewCork · 26/02/2017 14:54

If people with penises shows disgust towards men, doesn't pregnant persons show disgust towards women?

Identifying people with penises as people with penises is not mean to people with penises.

TheOnlyLivingBoyinNewCork · 26/02/2017 14:55

I might find that odd too, but we don't have the same attitude at all.

DianaMemorialJam · 26/02/2017 14:57

Why would I spend my day "debating" with people who are absolutely decided and only interested in my input to shoot it down?

You are in no way any more open to listening to what is being said on this thread either, otherwise you would READ and DISCUSS.

I will ask it AGAIN:

can the people that have accused the feminist boards of being full of transphobic bigotry please copy and paste some of it? TIA.

southall · 26/02/2017 14:58

I get the impression there are lots of Transgender deniers on mumsnet, posters who do not believe the condition is real.

NiceMoustache · 26/02/2017 14:59

I'd like it bullet pointed for ease of reading.

Real as in....?

BeyondUnderthinking · 26/02/2017 15:00

"...condition..."

Transphobe

NiceMoustache · 26/02/2017 15:00

Transgender deniers. Which one of the posters do you mean.

NiceMoustache · 26/02/2017 15:01

I find it odd that I like potatoes because Jimmy Saville also liked potatoes.

DianaMemorialJam · 26/02/2017 15:01

"...condition..."

Transphobe

This.

The ignorance of the people defending the op and the trans agenda is quite astonishing.

AllTheGlitters · 26/02/2017 15:02

venusscorpio I'm glad you agree, I thought I was going against my left wing views but no, I think there is a definite lack of common sense, or at least consideration of all affected parties, by the current sentiments.

I'm really hoping that the media portrayal of public opinion is hyperbolic and not how most trans people feel, and I worry that it is almost a "trendy" topic for many people at the moment to be very pro LGBT rights, rather than considering them as a necessary progression, and taking a balanced and informed view of what we can achieve while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Extreme views will only push back progress that can be made by in-sighting fear and outrage, sadly the media knows people will lap it up though and it's just another way to skew out perception and perpetuating more discord, it's very sad :(

Was just thinking the same Beyond

augustbody · 26/02/2017 15:05

I get the impression there are lots of Transgender deniers on mumsnet, posters who do not believe the condition is real.

I think that given that science tells us that there is no such thing as a 'male brain' and 'female brain' beyond hormones, people are questioning how you can be 'born in the wrong body' because you cannot have 'a female brain in a man's body'. It's impossible. And everything else is a social construct.

Why can't men just wear dresses and makeup and perform femininity and do all those things without the insistence that they are 'women'? I don't get it? And not only are they 'women' they are more 'women' than females who are actually apparently a subset 'cis women'.

DianaMemorialJam · 26/02/2017 15:06

Draylon referring to transgender as a 'condition' is transphobic. It isn't a mental health issue, but a social one.

"I get the impression there are lots of Transgender deniers on mumsnet, posters who do not believe the condition is real."

I believe that there are lots of people who are not comfortable with society's norms of behaviour for their sex...

I believe that makes society's norms wrong, not that person's biology.

Is that being a denier?

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/02/2017 15:10

I think the vast, vast majority of posters on trans threads absolutely believe that trans gender is real

But again there will be no evidence of any posts which say ' i dont believe transgender exists'

Not because there arent any such posts you understand, nope, it will be because someone doesnt have time to search or cant be bothered as it will be shouted down
