So, a friend of mine sent me a message saying her ds swore at a teacher today.

I already knew, as my ds had told me about it after he got home from school. As friend's ds was boasting at lunchtime. Ds thinks he's an idiot, as since joining secondary he thinks he is "hard".

Anyway, her message said what had happened, followed by a load of laughing emojis.

Wtf? What am I missing?

I just sent back "that's not very funny" but not had a reply.

Well if his mother finds it amusing then it's no wonder he thinks that's acceptable behaviour!

So why did he swear? What did her message say about what happened? It's hard to think anything other than of course YANBU. It's hard to imagine many posters will suggest it's as hilarious as your friend thinks it is.

Sorry, it was a brief message saying "x has started playing up at school, he called his maths teacher a fucking bitch, 😂😂😂😂"

This is the problem that teachers have these days. How can you discipline a child for this sort of behaviour when parents condone it? If the parents do not respect the teachers, then the child will not. And the worry is that if the child is like this now what will he be like in later life?

My mum used "lol" for lots of love (I think David Cameron did this too). I got a text from her once saying something like "sorry you've been really ill lol". Maybe it is an emoji mix up.

Yea did she mean to use the crying emoji, not the crying with laughter one?

My bil thought the 'aargh awkward' smiley was an actual smile. All his texts look passive aggressive.

There are two types of parents. The type that will reprimand their children for bad behaviour and feel ashamed if the children are awful in school. And the type who have 'angels who can do no wrong' and will not reprimand bad behaviour. Guess which kids become bullies and unpleasant adults...

I hope it's a mix up with the emojis, if not the poor boy stands no chance. I'd be mortified if either of mind called anybody that let alone a teacher; I'd be buying them flowers and the DC would be in deep trouble.

There are plenty of things my kids do that require a stern face to them, but which I will laugh about with my DH. Obviously I have no idea if I'd find this particular situation funny, so I don't know if YABU in this particular circumstance. But I think yABU to suggest there is no way to find bad behaviour also amusing. That sort of hard line sounds more like difficulty dealing with ambiguity and complexity.

Wonder if she will still be laughing when his behaviour means he misses loads of lessons and gets no qualifications?

Surprising you are friends since you obviously have completely different ideas about things and your kids don't like each other.

i don't mind my kids swearing at home but I would be incandescent if one of them said that to a teacher
