I consider Muslims our fellow brothers and sisters. It is important when supporting followers of one faith that we don't demonise those of another faith.

Agreed. I decided that we have alot 'more in common' in my teens, 10 years before the lovely Jo Cox stated it in parliament.Sad

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 12:51

"It's against nature" has already been comprehensively disproved.

Since when does comprehensively disproving something make a difference to these people? Religion does makes it easy for them though, particularly when they can just make up their own version and claim god told them it was so. Still, communism is not a religious doctrine and managed to allow people to commit a lot of pretty unpleasant shit. There is always something that can be used as justification when it suits.

I might not always agree with Owen Jones on everything, but he is absolutely right on this one:

Milo Yiannopoulos’s enablers deserve contempt – and must be confronted

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog Wow, just wow at that Bob Altermeyer book. I have read it all this morning totally neglecting more pressing demands on my time and was especially struck by this article and by the similarities to Brexit and its merry band of enthusiasts www.dailykos.com/story/2016/03/02/1494504/-A-word-from-Dr-Bob-Altemeyer-on-Donald-Trump-and-Authoritarian-Followers

It really is an extraordinary book, and incredibly easy to read. Let's hope that more and more people are prepared to engage with their opponents and begin to break down the walls of the echo chambers irl.

Arborea cheers, downloaded and ready to go! 12 characteristics of authoritarian suit Mrs May.Shock ( not really Grin)

Arborea · 21/02/2017 13:18

Funnily enough I reckon May to be high on RWA, but not so much on social domination, whereas Trump and Bannon both appear to be 'double highs'. I do wonder if Boris is also a double high...

woman12345 · 21/02/2017 13:22

If you look at what she's been doing in the Home Office, many of these traits seem to fit.

Destinysdaughter · 21/02/2017 13:43

Just listened to an interview with Ken Loach on Radio 2, Jeremy Vine, on the importance of solidarity. Such a lovely and thoughtful man. You can catch it on iPlayer. Worth a listen!

This is a nice little summary from the BBC of what might happen over the coming months in the German and French elections. Whatever direction the votes go it isn't going to be comfortable for the UK.

Sorry if mentioned earlier, for Le Pen the issue is (and has been in every Presidential election) whether she can get over 50% in the 2nd run of the election.
Many candidates in similar elections start with good leads, but lose in the 2nd run as the other candidate is more moderate and more consensual.

Deejoda · 21/02/2017 14:11

Lweji here's hoping she doesn't break the mould a la scrotus

Lweji · 21/02/2017 14:18

J'espére que non. :)

It would be the first time a National Front candidate goes to the 2nd round, though, if I'm not mistaken, and it could get very close.
I haven't been following it properly, and was surprised to notice that the Socialist Party candidate is not one of the front runners.

As it is, it's possible that none of the left wing candidates may go through to the 2nd round, and it could be a choice between the far-right and the right. I'd hope left-wing voters would go en masse for the right-wing candidate, but opinion polls suggest that is not the case, although it seems Fillon (righ wing) would have a clear victory.
It might be a better option than a left-wing party candidate who might not be as acceptable to right-wing voters as Le Pen.

Katie Hopkins is as hateful as ever I see...

Blimey, I don't placemark before bed and you lot are awaaaaaaaaaay!

AcrossthePond55 · 21/02/2017 14:26

I'm up now! Time for coffee and a catchup. And the West Coast AM news shows (if I can stand it).

Has it been a bit quiet on the Trumpy Twitter front?

merrymouse · 21/02/2017 14:27

Katie Hopkins is touting for business. If she can come up with an angle on 'why people are being mean to Milo', she can make some cash.

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 14:32

Gosh, she's standing up for a man who amongst other unhinged opinions has excused child abuse? That's just fucking stupid of her. Hmm

cozietoesie · 21/02/2017 14:33

It surely has. Smile

Lweji · 21/02/2017 14:34

It's what probably happened with the Iraq wars. Listen to what you want to hear and then act on it.

Not so simple.

Iraq war 1. Iraq invaded Kuwait. Decisive action was required.

Iraq war 2. Clearly deranged totalitarian President living in fantasy world, surrounded by golden furniture (description not totally innocent Wink), kept refusing to fully comply with weapons of mass destruction UN- inspections. He had previously used such WOMD for genocidal actions, so there were reasons to suspect he had them. It later turned out that they didn't, but my feeling at the time was that even Saddam was convinced he did. I think the CIA, etc, was partly convinced by that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_biological_weapons_program#Non-use_by_Hussein

Lweji · 21/02/2017 14:36

Those indulging in Milo's humiliation are probably just happy that he's less likely to spread his venom.
If only we could also catch Katie Hopkins. Or simply ignore her...

cozietoesie · 21/02/2017 14:43

Any news on the 'Russian connections', Across?

NotDavidTennant · 21/02/2017 14:45

Jean-Marie Le Pen reached the second round in 2002.

Lweji · 21/02/2017 14:46

I watched Milo's interview earlier today and one of his comments really struck.
Something like "words never hurt, murder and violence do".
Bill Maher lost a good opportunity to ask if he didn't think that words often led to actual violence. Hate speech may not hurt directly, but it may well lead people to commit violent acts, it may lead to people being afraid of leaving their homes and leading normal lives.

On a personal note, I've suffered threats (exH) and it affects our lives. It affects how we behave.
Hate speech leads to threats, and it leads to violence. Which is why hate speech hurts and it should be criminalised.

Lweji · 21/02/2017 14:49

Jean-Marie Le Pen reached the second round in 2002.

Thanks. :) I actually thought one of them had at some point, but didn't check. My bad. He only had 17.8%. Against Chirac (also right wing), which meant the left gave their votes to Chirac, but Marine is much more appealing to a certain type of left-wing voter. Confused

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 15:00

Something like "words never hurt, murder and violence do".

This is one of those statements that is used as an excuse by people who don't like being called out on their bigotry and hate. It is such a blatant load of rubbish. Words can and do hurt. Words change opions and lives. Tell the woman with a verbally abusive husband words don't hurt. Tell the kid that gets verbally bullied at school. Tell the homosexual living in a country where the word of the law states their relationship is illegal. All campaigns of hate and oppression start with words, if the words aren't challenged they end with war and gas chambers. I don't think even Yiannopoulos believes that statement for one moment.
