Holy shit, what's Arizona's justification for that?!

PausingFlatly · 23/02/2017 12:19

I think I'm going to try to avoid the word "truth", precisely because of the ambiguity of meaning.

So facts are one set of objects.
Opinions are another set of objects.*

"Truth" could mean either, and is sometimes used to deliberately blur any distinction. The ambiguity and level of emotional investment in things called truths is particularly clear in phrases like "I am the Way, the Truth and the Light." If I want a fact-based discussion, maybe I'd better avoid tapping into that vein.

(* I realise this is a simplification. Also, I'm a bit dopey today, so the above is shooting from the hip and should perhaps be ripped apart...)

Lweji · 23/02/2017 12:19

I think there are people in all States capable of proposing this type of stupidity. The question is whether it will be approved or not. Fingers crossed for some sense.

PausingFlatly · 23/02/2017 12:19

But back to the important stuff: Arizona, WTF?!

Lweji · 23/02/2017 12:35

Trump watch: 24 without tweets.

BTW, these are the President's remarks on the budget meeting, the 22nd:

"I want to congratulate Mick Mulvaney, who’s been confirmed finally we waited a long time by the Senate. And he’s going to be an absolutely great director. Total confidence in Mick. Known him for a long time. He loves those budgets."

"No more wasted money." "We won’t let your money be wasted anymore." - Ahem, trips to Florida. Ahem.

"We’re going to run government smoothly, efficiently" - starting when exactly?

"Our moral duty to the taxpayer requires us to make our government leaner and more accountable." - So, tax returns? Any time now?

"Sometime during the month of March, maybe mid- to early March we will be submitting something that I think people will be very impressed by." - something tells me that it will make an impression alright. Maybe a big impression, maybe a small impression. A winning impression.

And with that, we’re going to have a little meeting. - about 5 min and then I'll let Steve _ (fill as appropriate) in charge.

They actually put this in writing for future generations to wonder about.

SenecaFalls · 23/02/2017 12:36

The thing about protests is shocking.

And unconstitutional under the First Amendment. I doubt such a law would last long once a federal court got hold of it.

BiglyBadgers · 23/02/2017 13:08

Yes lweji that second paragraph about immigration was the sort of thing I was getting at. A truth is created when a fact is taken and interpreted through a personal or cultural lense. So while it does overlap with opinion and could be said to be opinion really (I'm not precious and maybe the immigration example wasn't the best) it is not necessarily something you can just say is wrong or that it is not based on any fact at its core. It is, however, subjective. It is interesting that in the courts we pledge to tell the truth. I see this as recognition that two people can see the same incident and give two vastly different accounts both of which could be true. The verdict though it's based on interpretation of the facts and evidence.

To be honest it is just so wooly and unclear I am immediately suspicious of anyone claiming to know the truth about anything Grin

BiglyBadgers · 23/02/2017 13:19

What is this madness???!!!!! Shock

Exclusive: United States could become an 'associate member' of the Commonwealth

I just have no words...

Mr Lake said the plans had been hastened by the "opportunity of a new president, and the slightly dangerous but great fun opportunity that the 'Bad Boys of Brexit' offered".

cozietoesie · 23/02/2017 13:21

Extra 'white-tie events', Bigly. Wink

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 23/02/2017 13:25

Don't worry, Bigly, the Torygraph loves to run these bonkers articles from time to time (well, okay, daily - I have a subscription on the "see what the other side thinks" basis). It's about as likely to happen as I am to become queen. (For a start off, Mr Lake really doesn't understand how Americans feel about their Independence with a capital "I"!)

I'm with Socrates on this one:
"I know one thing; that I know nothing" Wink

NotDavidTennant · 23/02/2017 13:28

More power-playing from Farage and co to make themselves seem relevant.

Lweji · 23/02/2017 13:28

"The Royal Commonwealth Society is making plans to open a branch in the United States, with a view to one day bringing America into the fold as an "associate member"."

Ah, but DT also plans to build a wall, and to have good relationships with all other countries. Which is going well.

BiglyBadgers · 23/02/2017 13:33

Thank you for calming my frayed nerves m0stly. I also only follow them to see how the other half lives. Grin

BiglyBadgers · 23/02/2017 13:35

Sooooo... New thread anyone? We are getting a bit close.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 23/02/2017 13:38

Bigly - I checked out the Royal Commonwealth Society - it's a private members club and charitable organisation, so no official standing. Another piece of Torygraph "non-news" (the sad thing is that when they're on form, the Telegraph also does some excellent reporting - it's such a weird mixture of genuine news, click bait and dog-whistle stuff).

Deejoda · 23/02/2017 13:39

We need a new thread @amispartacus

amispartacus · 23/02/2017 14:03

Busy working. Executive order. Please can someone start one

"Can anyone but McMaster master The unmasterable Donald?"
"Enough with the Executive Orders -- when will we see some legislation?"
"How much longer will we be lumped with Trump the Chump?"

honestly I am rubbish at thread titles.

BiglyBadgers · 23/02/2017 14:27

Me me! I want to Grin

CussingQuim · 23/02/2017 14:28

Oh, no fair

#CrookedBigly

Lweji · 23/02/2017 14:35

That was tremendously close.

I win the thread. Bigly win. The biggest win since threads have started. Grin
