Isaac Simpson ponders the possible consequences of impeachment and comes to disturbing conclusions
medium.com/@IsaacSimpson/if-trump-is-impeached-it-might-be-the-end-of-america-b7a2243399b7?source=email-84fb67d882f3-1487660817103-digest.reader------2-3&sectionName=recommended

'Be careful what you wish for when you push for Trump’s impeachment. It may seem like Watergate, but it’s unlikely to pan out the way. The players are different. The narratives are different. The psychologies are different. And the blow dealt to a large and necessary portion of the population could be so great as to push a precariously balanced America off its axis into oblivion'

CussingQuim · 21/02/2017 11:07

I have been wondering what the "happy ending" to all this can be.

Maybe it just has to be the end of "normal" as we know it. Maybe there can't be a United set of states anymore?

CussingQuim · 21/02/2017 11:07

Putin and others must be deliriously happy over it all.

woman12345 · 21/02/2017 11:17

Putin and others must be deliriously happy over it all all going to plan.

peaceout · 21/02/2017 11:19

Trump stays= USA fucked
Trump impeached= USA fucked

Putin-> 'heads I win, tails you lose'

I ended up on some weird part of YouTube last night with lots of religious trump supporters and some 'end times' video. People are so happy that Melania performed the Lords prayer. They think of her as a sort of goddess and trump as some sort of wonderful saviour who will 'finally' defend Jesus and Christianity, with talk about getting America back, packing all the muslims up or gassing them.
Scary for muslims like me, and I've grown up with Christian friends and neighbours. This isn't the Christianity I've seen in my life.
Really weird people out there on all sides. The rest of us get caught in the middle, still trying to cling onto decency whilst teaching our children to not even kill insects.

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 11:24

I have been wondering what the "happy ending" to all this can be.

I think whatever happens we have passed the point where there will be a quick, clean end to this where everything just goes back to how it was over night. This is going to be a long and bumpy right. If he is impeached there will be a massive backlash from a sizable group of his supporters. A lot will just make lots of noise, but Trump has not been shy about inciting his support to violence and there is a sizable minority that would be receptive to this call if he is taken down. I don't pretend to know what that would look like, but I think it is unrealistic to assume violence of some sort wouldn't happen.

My view is that taking him down will hopefully be a shorter amount of pain then leaving him in power and risking him never going or starting the next world war. I don't think we should shy away from impeachment because of the unpleasantness that will follow.

MsHooliesCardigan · 21/02/2017 11:25

peaceout that article is really scary but I agree with him. We really are all doomed.

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 11:27

Some people use religion as a convenient cover for just being cunts.

Deejoda · 21/02/2017 11:28

packing all the muslims up or gassing them
Yet his supporters wonder why he is constantly being compared to Hitler. So scary we are living side by side with some of these hate-filled people.

woman12345 · 21/02/2017 11:28

Sorry to say, religion has been used before as a cover for totalitarianism, including Christianity.

Roussette · 21/02/2017 11:31

There is no happy ending I don't think.

My best hope is he will get bored out of his skull and invent a health scare and bugger off. Impeachment sounds great but it isn't, it will be a bloody battle and as someone said who knows what violence by his fervent supporters.

There's a whole hoo haa about the amount of golf he is playing. Every day of the weekend. The WH are trying to shush it up but the likes of Rory McIlroy are posting pics of him playing with them. I found it bizarre that he didn't put golf aside for just a month or two whilst he got to grips with the job of leading the US. No... he just carries on like he always does and won't let anyone question him. I think this will be his undoing. Boredom. He's a 70 yr old rich guy who just wants to play golf when he wants to without all that pesky reading and briefings.

Trump claimed he didn't know she was going to do it, presumably to make it look as if she was possessed by divine inspiration, it was clearly very deliberate and i think you are right, designed to make her look like a religious icon.
The fact that she stumbled over her words etc made her look even more child-like and Innocent.

They are crafting an image which has him as benevolent paternal authority figure and she the guileless submissive devout wife

You're probably right, I think he'll just make such a tit of himself tthat he loses support

Or the power might warp him like the ring did smeagol, he'll end up a twisted weird old gollum thing😱

CaveMum · 21/02/2017 11:46

What do you mean "he'll end up" peaceout? He already is! Wink

Bananagio · 21/02/2017 11:49

Delurking to say that a certain brand of particularly US based Christianity is about as far removed from the Christianity I believe in as Islamic extremism is from the Islam that most Muslims are aligned to. And yes to this Some people use religion as a convenient cover for just being cunts. If any of these people could see further than the end of the bigoted noses and put their disturbing enthusiasm for hurrying the bizarre doctrine of the rapture along then they might also recognise this. Luckily, so far, most Christians seethegood don't think like this but I sometimes wish those that don't would be a bit more vocal about condoning those that do!
Back to lurking! Thanks for the threads and the dose of sanity everyone.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2017 12:26

It's certainly not my brand of Christianity.

As an aside, I am worried that that a lot of the anti Trump talk also comes with a flavour of anti-Christianity too. The US brand of Christianity that supports him I would consider extremist Christians and don't at all represent the teachings of Christ.

I consider Muslims our fellow brothers and sisters. It is important when supporting followers of one faith that we don't demonise those of another faith.

NotDavidTennant · 21/02/2017 12:28

A lot of Protestant churches in the US are Calvinist in theology. In Calvinist belief God has chosen those who will receive his salvation (the 'elect') ahead of time, and those he has chosen will have faith in God and be admitted to Heaven and everyone else goes to Hell. How good or virtuous or moral you are is irrelevant, if God has decided that you're not in the elect than you're out. It is faith (which is given to people by God, not achieved through any act of their own will) that is important, not how you behave.

It's a very different mindset from the liberal view of Christianity as being about doing good, following the golden rule, etc.

This is about the UK but the prognosis doesn't look too good here either...

bizarre doctrine of the rapture , and hence " I have read a book..........apocalypse" announcement at last week's press conference. Bannon scripted. Rapture in not a good thing, at least I see no mention of in any of the traditional democracies.

DUP in NI also closely aligned with alt right Christian organisations in US.

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 12:35

I am an atheist, but I don't believe that religion is the problem and am not anti-christian or any other religion. I think horrid people are often able to use religion as a cover and excuse for their behaviour. They should be called out on this no matter what group they associate themselves with. If there was no religion in the world these people would still be bigots, they would just find some other excuse to justify their actions.

BarbarianMum · 21/02/2017 12:39

I dunno Bigly I think it would be a hell of a lot more difficult for people to justify homophobia without religion. Because unless you can say "it's against the Bible, it's against the Koran etc" what could you say? "It's against nature" has already been comprehensively disproved.
