If you choose not to protest - or sit back and refuse, in any way, to add your voice to the effort of change - then that is a kind of passivity I find difficult to accept.

To a certain extent I can understand some people sticking their heads in the sand and not wanting to get involved. Personally I couldn't live with myself if I didn't at least speak out and go to a protest or two. What I find impossible to get my head around is someone coming on a thread like this at telling us we should all join them in the sandpit. Presumably we are making them feel bad about their complacency. I guess it is awfully hard to stick your fingers in your ears and ignore the shit when people keep waving placards in your face.

amispartacus · 21/02/2017 09:57

Nudge tactics. Asking people who support Trump if they feel comfortable that POTUS gets info from Fox news and then tweets it to his followers and acts on it.

No 'hysteria' - to quote certain columnists. Just calm measured questions like that.

I don't appreciate being told to leave it alone as it's not our business. Especially when a number of us on here have been very open about the fact that we are Americans, and from that standpoint alone it is very much our business. But more widely, it is ALL of our business as it affects more than just the US.

On a sperate but related note, as it concerns the general disaster that is politics at the moment, I have just been reading the guardians coverage of the Stoke by election and am seriously starting to wonder if there is a single candidate that is not a lying, bigoted slime ball. I would be amazed if the voters don't just curl up and stay at home in despair. Surely one of the parties could have found a candidate that doesn't lie as soon as they open their mouths.

Saying that I confess I don't know anything about the green party guy or the lib dem candidate, though I understand he is an NHS consultant so could be alright. Failing them a vote for The Incredible Flying Brick seems like a good plan Wink

*People who say - well Sweden does have issues are missing the BIGGER picture.

Trump saw something on TV, It suited his views, He repeated it to the masses.

A President or Prime Minister shouldn't do that*

EXACTLY. I was arguing this point elsewhere (not MN) and some troll other poster could just not get it and his only defence was to pick apart two words I wrote wrongly and try and hold me up for derision for making stuff up (I quoted what DT had said about Sweden but after copy and pasting it to him endlessly, instead I wrote it from memory and got two words muddled up). Instead he was the one that was ridiculed Grin

Should the Leader of a country rely on a single news channel as a source of information and then act on that information?

It's a simple question to ask. Neutral. It should be answered without reference to specific incidents - just a general question.

Maybe one that should be asked in Presidential debates.

All those saying state visits haven't been protested against before - it's just not true. Even George W had protests. The difference is that social media can spread the word much louder and wider and so more people know and turn up

Really?

President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan were welcomed on a state visit in Autumn 2015. Less than 2 years ago I am sure twitter and facebook existed.

I do not remember a mass protest at China's undemocratic, one party communist state or their human rights record or his wife and what she may deal with as his wife.

As I said why the fixation on Trump and why disrespect the democratic choice of the American people.

Why did none of you protest President Xi's visit.

I want an answer.

TheClaws · 21/02/2017 10:28

Bigly I'm with you on the compulsion to, maybe, put your head under the blankets for a couple of years until it's over...but, it's the ACTIVE sitting out I don't like. This "let him serve his two terms - then he'll be gone, so let's just look after us," attitude is just so defeatist. Have an actual position!

merrymouse · 21/02/2017 10:29

Why did none of you protest President Xi's visit.

You haven't read the thread have you?

woman12345 · 21/02/2017 10:30

I'd rather live in China than racist Britain right now. Don't think Chinese are sending letters to citizens telling them to leave the country or putting thousands in deportation camps.

Destinysdaughter · 21/02/2017 10:31

"Free" Nikki, your tone is very aggressive and no one on here owes you an answer. You're just on here to cause trouble and I for one am not going to engage with you.

NoCryingInEngineering · 21/02/2017 10:33

There were definitely protests at President Xi's visit

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-34582136

FreeNiki · 21/02/2017 10:33

Woman12345 you'd rather live in China. Restricted to one child. Aggressive measures taken should you have more. No welfare state. Pack your bags lovie tell us all how it is

TheClaws · 21/02/2017 10:34

President Xi did not represent such a threat to basic democracy as Trump does, FreeNiki.

CussingQuim · 21/02/2017 10:36

FreeNiki, if you don't read the thread, you can't expect people to keep engaging with you as it comes across as just trying to quarrel. I'm sure you can understand that.

merrymouse · 21/02/2017 10:37

FreeNiki, I certainly don't want to live in China and am sure that I have more rights here in the UK.

However, you still haven't read the thread, don't appear to know much about protests and you aren't up to speed on China as the one child policy ended last year.

I think you should do some more reading around the subject and come back when you are better informed.

CussingQuim · 21/02/2017 10:37

Ah just saw your last post. Troll. Gottit.

woman12345 · 21/02/2017 10:37

freeNiki you are wrong: one child policy has been relaxed for many years and is ignored in the northern Xiang province. Welfare state has existed after a fashion longer than in britain. I suggest you research more closely, read more widely, and watch out for pre conceptions.
I won't disrupt this thread further with red herrings.

saffronwblue · 21/02/2017 10:38

There is no other world leader as openly unhinged, irrational or ego-driven as Trump ( with the possible exceptions of Mugabe and Kim Jong-Un). This is quite a stellar achievement for 45 after one month.

Natsku · 21/02/2017 10:42

Placemarking on this bigly sane thread - so nice to come here and read sane people's views on Trump et al.!

Have been busy on an American forum trying to explain what the situation really is in Sweden but they just keep ignoring facts.

woman12345 · 21/02/2017 10:43

Last word on China (apart form gorgeous landscape, divine jasmine tea and tai chi)
is they are now taking the lead on decreasing global warming as EP and May too probably, say it's false science.

As their industry has developed so recently, they can change to greener energy use more easily, but as global warming doesn't exist in the US, it's no longer a problem, besides Trump can get the ice bergs.Grin

MsHooliesCardigan · 21/02/2017 10:52

Niki why don't you go and start your own thread instead of muscling in on a thread that's supportive and good humoured to demand answers?
Although, if you're looking for other Trump fans on here, I suspect it will be a very quiet thread as even his most demented ardent supporters on here have gone very quiet in the last month.

BiglyBadgers · 21/02/2017 10:55

A poster once said 'if a protest took place but FreeNikki was not there to witness it, did it really happen?' Hmm

SanFranBear · 21/02/2017 10:56

If you'd clicked the link I included on the post where you took my quote from Niki, you'll have seen there were protests over the Chinese state visits.

Even someone on this thread protested...

I take your point over social media but it is used much more widely than even two years ago. It's still a valid point.
