"Ivanka Trump‏ @IvankaTrump
America is a nation built on the principle of religious tolerance. We must protect our houses of worship & religious centers."

Why couldn't Trump say this at the press conference?

cozietoesie · 21/02/2017 00:06

The main Guardian article refers to and quotes many of the female speakers. I guess you can regard the one in the link as an 'opinion piece' and view the author accordingly?

ColoursRainbow · 21/02/2017 00:07

Was mumsnet really on Fox?

amispartacus · 21/02/2017 00:08

Can't have been any women MPs speaking.

www.nytimes.com/2017/02/20/world/europe/britain-trump-state-visit.html

www.washingtonpost.com/world/british-parliament-debates-trump-visit

Not one female MP mentioned...

I was thinking that myself earlier - the hive mind trumpsplainers were very samey - there was little more said that 'in the nations interest' blah blah but the other side had a wider range of comments & input & some really excellent speakers. Sky start with 'trump called a petulant child' & make little reference to the well argued, eloquent statements made - the women especially - with coverage of 4 men who spoke. ITV wasn't much different earlier tbh. I've not seen BBC coverage yet.

Milo is a cunt. Saying reporting sexual assault is just bragging about how attractive you are???

PlectrumElectrum · 21/02/2017 00:16

Grinami see what you've done? This is FAKE NEWS.

No, MN not mentioned on Fox. We should be though. We got our fingers on the pulse here. 🖕🏻

amispartacus · 21/02/2017 00:19

The media just needs to say:

There was a debate today about Trump visiting. Go read the transcript or watch it so you can decide what was said. We won't put out our spin on it.

John Crace does political sketches - maybe he did bias coverage towards men, but the general aim is to take the piss. Maybe female MPs sounded too sensible?

FantasticButtocks · 21/02/2017 00:20

ColoursRainbow

Was mumsnet really on Fox?

Don't think so... Fox were broadcasting our (UK Parliament, rather than our MN) debate about the petition on whether Trump should be allowed a state visit. Grin don't think Fox News could keep up with our debate/threads Grin

ColoursRainbow · 21/02/2017 00:21

LOL probably not - they are very fast moving and awesome btw, try to keep up when I can! :)

AcrossthePond55 · 21/02/2017 00:26

ami to an extent that was the news when I was young. In the evening Walter Cronkite or Huntley/Brinkley said "XX happened today" followed by the bare facts, no 'slant' or analysis. Then in the morning you got your morning newspaper with a much more detailed story with facts, quotes, and pictures.

TheClaws · 21/02/2017 00:33

Re: the tweet deletions. I've noticed that too. It seems to be the immediate location-revealing ones though rather than any of the usual ranty fake-news tweets. I'm not sure he's aware that there is a permanent record of his tweets, even if he deletes them.

Well done on the British parliament for voting 'No' to Trump's visit, even if he still muddies your shores. Voices were still heard. Hopefully, when and if he should ever get around to visiting Australia (!!) our government will have the same balls to even debate the issue.

Ironically given all the arguments about Churchill's bust in the Whitehouse, Nicholas Soames appears (from his Twitter feed) to thinks he is an idiot.

"Nicholas Soames‏ @nsoamesmp
A month into the new Presidency and its worrying to see that his team seems to be not only inept but also straight nasty #hardtoseethiswork"

#NewMeaningsForPOTUS Piece Of Toxic Unconstitutional Shit

AcrossthePond55 · 21/02/2017 01:16

Fox article made it seem as if the debate was completely split along party lines (as is usual in our Congress), but I heard a number of Conservative MP voice disapproval, although it was couched more in terms of 'concern' as opposed to 'are you guys fucking crazy?' heard by other party MPs.

FreeNiki · 21/02/2017 01:30

I think the state visit us pretty inevitable now. The only question is whether it will be mildly embarrassing or a complete disaster.

If we can invite Martin McGuinness to meet the Queen why protest Trump.

I dont remember hordes objecting to state visits from
President Xi Jingpin of China
Sheikhs from Saudi, Qatar, UAE and Kuwait
Vladimir Putin
Robert Mugabe

I dont remember anyone making threads about them or their wives.

Trump was democratically elected. We had no say in his election. Not our country, not our decision to make and not any of our business.

Trump cant serve more than 2 terms. How about we focus on our own issues.

TheClaws · 21/02/2017 02:02

FreeNiki I think, and many around the globe would agree, that Trump is a world issue. He has the capacity to destabilise unions, established allliances, and economies and form (or further) rifts with nations. We didn't have a say in his election, no, but it is our business what he does. Disinterest and passivity is dangerous. Things can pass you by.

CaveMum · 21/02/2017 06:18

SanFranBear, Rich Hall (the comedian) did a really interesting programme for BBC4 in the run up to the election in which he talked about US Presidential elections and he touched on Dukakis' trouncing.

He was the victim of his own moderation, in the debates he was asked if he would seek the death penalty if his wife was raped and murdered (he was a known opponent of the death penalty) and he gave a really lightweight answer. Many people said he should have rounded on the guy asking such a question but his answer was just so "meh" that Bush (a strong death penalty advocate) was able to paint him as soft on crime and it all unravelled from there.

In the programme he seemed a decent enough bloke, but he said that one question cost him the election.

CussingQuim · 21/02/2017 06:34

merrymouse · 21/02/2017 07:16

Agree with claws.

It's also very clear that both Trump and Bannon include Brexit in their 'movement', and that many Trump supporters are Le Pen supporters. Trump's influence is not confined to the US.

Lweji · 21/02/2017 07:31

Trump cant serve more than 2 terms. How about we focus on our own issues.

We are.
Trump has a lot more influence in the UK and Europe than any of the leaders you mentioned.
They basically lead NATO and are a preferencial business partner.
They are supposed to be the leaders of the "free world".
It matters. Bigly.

And, for reference, WWI was 4 years and WWII was 6. Untold damage can be done in 8 years.
