New packaging on cigarettes

To any smokers out there, have you noticed any difference in the cigarettes in the new packaging to the old packets?

graphista Of course you can have an opinion. I just don't get why people who are vehemently anti-smoking and have little more to say than it's 'disgusting/vile/ poisoning children' feel the need to go on every thread that mentions smoking to say that. It's not constructive, it's not going to stop those people smoking, it's basically just goady imho. I wasn't ranting at you, more a general rant about attitudes. :)

And oh god, don't get me started on all the people who suddenly want to sit outside the minute the sun is out and are mortally offended at the fact smokers are there.

Gowgirl · 19/02/2017 19:50

graphista do a search on smoking threads and it will instantly explain why the usual crew are defensive people are vile towards smokers on every thread!

dnamummy · 19/02/2017 19:51

Proud - menthol cigs going too as seen as an easy hook to start teenagers smoking, so you,d better start buying Polos to suck as we did in the '80s!

abigamarone · 19/02/2017 19:53

I don't smoke but I don't care if other people do, as long as it's not in my house or where I'm eating. But it amuses me no end when customers complain about the packaging and either choose another brand 'cos of the picture, or flounce out declaring that they're going to Tesco instead.

Graphista · 19/02/2017 19:57

I find the subject interesting especially with my family background.

I didn't know there was a reason why smokers feel defensive on mn in particular.

I certainly don't have a problem with smokers in outside areas. I'm of an age I well remember smoking in workplaces, clubs, pubs, restaurants even cinemas/theatre and planes! Found it really weird after living overseas when the smoking bans came in to return to a virtually smoke free uk!

Janey50 · 19/02/2017 20:00

unicorn - 'mines got a naked man on'. GrinI've seen that one and was intrigued as to what it could refer to! Impotence apparently. I wish I could quit smoking for good. I'm so stupid. In 1999 I gave up for FOURTEEN years, then I got together with my DP who smokes and guess what? Yes,a year later off I went again. That was 3 years ago. I have managed to get down to just 3 or 4 a day,but am finding that last push really difficult.

RebelRogue · 19/02/2017 20:06

Graphista normally because we're called vile, stupid, smelly, disgusting, dirty, selfish, bad parents etc..you get the point.
I'm an ok mum,I'm an ok person and fags keep me sane. That's all.

WaitrosePigeon · 19/02/2017 20:08

Yes, the packages are plain and they have a picture - you must know that though Hmm

I love smoking Grin

WaitrosePigeon · 19/02/2017 20:08

I had a packet that looked like someone's bum hole the other day. I had to rip it off!

Saucery · 19/02/2017 20:10

White sticky labels sound good then! Or an old fashioned silver case.

mrssmith79 · 19/02/2017 20:11

It might just be me but I smoke menthol superkings and I find that the ones in the new package just 'go out' if I'm not puffing on them enough so I have to relight them. Nice having 20 in a pack though.

WaitrosePigeon · 19/02/2017 20:13

Didn't think about white sticky labels, thanks!

Graphista · 19/02/2017 20:13

Wow! That's not on! (Name calling)

Nobody's perfect.

ProudBadMum · 19/02/2017 20:18

I'm enjoying them while I can. I'll suck a polo while I smoke. It'll be fine

Neither parent smokes. Both hate it. Out of 4 siblings from 14 to 26 only I smoke. I started in school.

Stopped during pregnancies but the first night out always brought the smoking back.

TheSnowFairy · 19/02/2017 20:21

'I'm of an age I well remember smoking in workplaces, clubs, pubs, restaurants even cinemas/theatre and planes!'

Me too.

Still not smoked, thank you for the supportive comments. A pack of 10 used to last me 3 days so like a lot of you, was a fairly light smoker anyway.

Oh, and a message to all the Halo holier than thou smoker haters jumping on this thread - go and find another thread where your saintliness will be better thought of Hmm.

bagpackbagpack · 19/02/2017 20:23

Plain packaging is just ridiculous.

I am an on off smoker, sometimes use an ecig, but very rarely go without nicotine! I do try and make a conscious effort to buy cigarettes with the least amount of tar, carbon dioxide and nicotine. it is labelled on the side of packs.

I think it would be much more helpful if this was clearly displayed on packaging, a bit like the red, amber green for calories, fat, sugar and salt on food packaging. Put perhaps different shades of red. But any way we wouldn't be able to tell since they are all behind a screen..

I can hold a bottle of wine in my hand and see exactly where it was made and the alcohol %. And make an informed choice. I can't do that with cigarettes.

It's such a weird random thing, I know smoking is bad for me, I know drinking wine is too, as I know certain foods are etc. I am an adult and I make my own choices.

I don't smoke around my child, or other people's. Even crossing the road if I am out smoking and see a person coming towards me with children etc. I would expect adults to do the same if they had "such" a problem with 3 seconds of passive smoking.

It's so silly, if the government really really wanted to do something about it, they would classify it as a drug, and then have to dish out all sorts in the NHS for us poor addicts... we would be all queuing outside boots looking for our fix 🙈🙈

bagpackbagpack · 19/02/2017 20:32

Oh an to people asking why I started, I actually first smoked at 14/15 because the cool kids where doing it (not because the packing looked pretty, we bought cigs with out dinner money, so got cheep shitty ones anyway).

I continued smoking because it became quite a social thing, sitting outside a pub/bar/club with the heaters drunk, chatting to strangers. Lovely ambience!

splendide · 19/02/2017 20:56

It's interesting people think it makes no difference. I think it will. We'll see I guess.

People thought the smoking ban would be completely unworkable but actually it went through very smoothly. I used to smoke at work when I was 16, ashtray on the counter in the video shop. Seems nuts now!

backtowork2015 · 19/02/2017 20:57

Former smoker here. The thing is when you smoke you really believe you can't give it up, yeah it's tough to start with but once you've got the first few days under your belt it gets easier then suddenly you're a while in and you realise what a mugs game it is. Always wondering when you'll get the next chance, that nagging craving, leaving the good conversation, standing in the rain.... just why?!
Good luck snow fairy, you're doing yourself the biggest favour ever.
I work in cancer, smokers never think it will happen to them, but it does and it's devastating and so much worse for the people who love them. If you could glimpse that future, not seeing you dc marry and not meeting your gc, you would stop now. My dh misses his dm every single day and wishes she'd been here for these moments. We should do everything possible to convince you all to quit. Not because we're smug and self righteous but because people like you are dying a horrible death and it's really easy to avoid it. Plain packs and evil pics, bring it all on.

TheSnowFairy · 19/02/2017 21:12

"back* I had tried many times before. It really was that I couldn't find any packs of 10 and was damned if I was buying 20 at those prices.

Although the threat of cancer probably should have been a stronger factor, it wasn't Blush

skerrywind · 20/02/2017 06:37

Smoking is disgusting.

My father died a horrible premature death because of smoking.

As a child I missed 3 months a year of school because I had bad bronchitis every year. My father was a heavy smoker. I have memories of lying on the sofa, coughing and vomiting while my father smoked.

skerrywind · 20/02/2017 06:46

I just don't get why people who are vehemently anti-smoking and have little more to say than it's 'disgusting/vile/ poisoning children'

Because smoking causes pain, injury, suffering and death.

sashh · 20/02/2017 07:17

is making me determined to quit (tried twice since new year sad).

Don't be sad, stop thinking of it as trying and failing. Don't 'try to give up' just 'see how long I can go without one'.

It means you cannot fail, you might go an hour, or a day. But the next time you see how long you can go make it longer than the last time, even if it is one hour plus 2 mins.
If you do an hour on day one, then an hour plus 5 mins on day two and carry on you are at over 1.5 hours at the end of the week.

My dad did this, he is still seeing how long he can go, he is at 40 years now.

WaitrosePigeon · 20/02/2017 07:34

Because smoking causes pain, injury, suffering and death.

To some people, yes. It's still absolutely nothing to do with you, though.

Be careful with your reply, wouldn't want it deleted like one of your other personal attacks.

skerrywind · 20/02/2017 07:45

To some people, yes. It's still absolutely nothing to do with you, though.

Everything to do with me.
I lost my father due to smoking and was made very ill as a child because of smoking.
