Advert for a local company popped up on my fb, what were they thinking!

Anyone else find this pretty ignorant and offensive

people doing that particular piece of lunacy are the reason you see councils banning flags of St. George and people wishing each other "happy holidays" on December 25th

It's political correctness gorn mad Hmm

Hatemylifenow · 19/02/2017 10:40

I have OCD. I agree with pp. What if if obsessive was substituted for autistic?

It is ignorant and it is offensive.

MrsMeeseeks · 19/02/2017 10:40

But the advert makes no reference to cleaning?

OCD doesn't necessarily have anything to do with cleaning.

Hatemylifenow · 19/02/2017 10:41

eggs

Tbh your comment shows how little people actually know about OCD. Mine has got nothing to do with cleaning - I'm pretty messy and not remotely germ phobic.

ForeverLivingMyArse · 19/02/2017 10:42

But the advert makes no reference to cleaning? It's about being obsessed with cakes

It's not just being obsessed with cakes is it? The advert refers to an obsessive disorder... and cakes.

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2017 10:42

Yes. On a site where people are rightly berated for saying they think an acquaintance might be a bit autistic it seems like OCD is fair game for a bit of light hearted fun at best, aspirational at worst. It's a fucking disease.
oops sorry I'm a bit tourettey today.

EggsEleven · 19/02/2017 10:43

I was responding to Stealths post. Sorry, I should have made that clearer. I know OCD isn't about clean kitchens. My point was i don't think the ad tries to reinforce that misconception either.

Somerville · 19/02/2017 10:43

I dislike it because it contributes to this societal attitude that OCD is a bit of a joke. And it's not - it can be a really serious mental health issue.

StumblyMonkey · 19/02/2017 10:43

I have a type of OCD and other MH issues. Doesn't offend me.

Someone got me a mug at Christmas that said I had Obsessive Cat Disorder (I have 4 cats). I didn't find that offensive either.

They're not saying anything about having OCD itself, so while there are many things related to MH I am offended by, this isn't one.

OurBlanche · 19/02/2017 10:43

Oh, I don't know

This caused such a furore at the time. I remember my father not being at all sure what the hell was going on!

Even now there are some who think this is offensive (recent facebook spat) despite the fairly obvious context - he meant it to be challenging, offensive, etc.

That, almost 40 years later we are still not able to discuss almost any disability without falling into a quagmire of offense is ludicrous!

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2017 10:45

Exactly Somerville

OurBlanche · 19/02/2017 10:45

OCD doesn't necessarily have anything to do with cleaning. But, but, but... it means Obsessive Cleaning Disorder... I saw it on the telly!!! Smile

Pshaw!

TheWinterOfOurDiscountTents · 19/02/2017 10:46

Offense is individual.
"I find that offensive"....fine. "That is offensive (objectively)"...not really fine.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 19/02/2017 10:47

It wouldn't occur to me to be offended by it, bigger stuff to get pissed off about but I don't have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

I do get annoyed by 'I'm a bit OCD' comments I hear Hmm. You're not a 'bit' OCD, you're a fussy bugger, that's all.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 19/02/2017 10:48

I think it's insensitive & a crap name for a cake shop.

Ok, so it doesn't offend everyone who has OCD, but it will upset or offend some people who do have OCD, so why do it!?

I wouldn't buy anything from them, I wouldn't support them.

Besides, people that stupid probably don't bake nice cakes 😉

Bluebellevergreen · 19/02/2017 10:48

I have OCD and I dont find it particularly offensive but I find it tacky and not very smart so I wouldn't buy from them at all

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2017 10:48

And you don't think this sort of ad feeds into the general perception that it's light hearted, no big deal and a bit of a joke?

StrangeLookingParasite · 19/02/2017 10:48

Funny how OCD seems to be the only mental illness people think it's OK to make fun of and minimise.

Not at all. People make comments about being 'schizo', or being depressed when they're not (I have depression, sometimes quite severely).
I honestly don't have time to be offended by this misuse, or by using idiot. And what is achieved by being offended, anyway? Not much.

witsender · 19/02/2017 10:49

Bothers me

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2017 10:51

To all those saying it's just an acronym how would you feel about

I've got AIDS (acquired iced doughnut syndrome)

Cailleach1 · 19/02/2017 10:51

This reminds me of an incident from many moons ago. I was working in an office and someone rang up asking if we knew the number for the AA. The person who answered didn't seem to know what they were referring to. There was a giggle from another corner of the office about Alcoholics Anonymous. This was relayed over the phone. The person was quite cross asking for the Automobile Association. AA.

OurBlanche · 19/02/2017 10:53

I have OCD and I dont find it particularly offensive but I find it tacky and not very smart so I wouldn't buy from them at all Perfect response. Doesn't affect you and removes at least one possible customer as a direct response to their choice of advertising message.

No need too be publicly offended. Where advertising is concerned such messages become their own Darwin Award nominations!

MuseumOfCurry · 19/02/2017 10:53

Surely the casual use of the word 'starving' has got to be the most offensive term of all, but it's seemingly.... fine.

MrsMeeseeks · 19/02/2017 10:53

"I find that offensive"....fine. "That is offensive (objectively)"...not really fine.

And "that may be offensive to some"?

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2017 10:54

I've got CANCER (cake and nicer cakes enough (to go) round)
Assuming someone cleverer than me came up wih a better phrase to fit the acronym).
Assume this would be fine - not bad taste at all
