To ask how much you spend on grooming/maintenance?

Hello all,

I was going to ask on Style&Beauty but figured the responses there would be quite skewed and so I came here where there would be unbiased responses and traffic.

At the train station yesterday I saw this young lady who looked very well put together. Her outfit was coordinated, nails done, eyebrows done, makeup done but not overly so. The thing that stood out the most though , was her hair. It looked lovely ; highlights and nice cut (ha can't explain well enough) and she just looked like someone who took pride of the way she looks. I've since spoken to my friend about this and the possible cost of such upkeep. That got me wondering how much others here spend on their grooming and upkeep.

Clothes; Makeup; Nails; Hair; Eyebrows; Eyelashes; you get the jist !

I've never worn any makeup (and won't start in my late 40s Grin). I have learnt to cut my own hair (pro scissors, two mirrors) in the bathroom - partly because of the cost but also because I'm not willing to waste all that time at the hairdresser's, life's more valuable than that. I work in an open plan office in the corporate world and I blend in, so the result can't be that bad. Clothes: I enjoy charity shopping as a leisure activity (the excitement of the hunt/finding something unexpected), so 95% of my clothes are from there. Shampoo and body lotion from supermarket.

AwfulSomething · 17/02/2017 20:36

I spend the bare minimum! I grew up with many compliments on my looks so never really felt any great need to do much more than very basic make up, occasional hair cuts and fairly plain clothes. I am a regular exerciser and eat healthily - these are two things very important to me.

JustBeingJobless · 17/02/2017 20:51

Hair cut once or twice a year at hairdressing college - £15

Make up, eyebrows, nails - £0

Clothes - £100 per year max.

I'm not very high maintenance!

turbohamster · 17/02/2017 20:58

Hardly anything! I am shock cos I feel like I must be really tight fisted now but I also couldn't imagine spending such amounts on something I ultimately consider an annoyance (which probably says it all blush)

Exactly my thought process

GreedyDuck · 17/02/2017 21:08

Hair - £100 for cut & colour 3 or 4x a year.
Wax - £0
Nails - £0
Makeup - £100 a year on decent base/powder/lippie & mascara. Usually Chanel, Laura Mercier or Bobbi Brown.
Skincare - £50
Clothes - £1000

I am a bit of a scruffbag and wear jeans and Converse 90% of the time as I work in a very relaxed organisation, and have a toddler. But I do think a decent haircut and good shoes speak volumes. Can't be faffed with eyelash extensions/gel nails/fake tan/fillers etc.

gottaloveascamhun · 17/02/2017 21:19

Hair cut and colour £65 every 6 weeks
Shellac nails £20 every 2 weeks
Natural looking make up £10 per month on average
Clothes £50 per month. Currently working on being a bit less scruffy and more out together.
I don't have eyebrows done as I'm scared of the overdone look!
Occasional spa day which is a birthday present etc.

Bloodybridget · 17/02/2017 21:32

Haircut is £50 about every eight weeks. I don't wear makeup or have facials, nail stuff, hair removal or pedicures. I buy cheap face cream and body lotion and Tresemme shampoo and conditioner. Don't spend much on clothes, under £1000 a year, I guess. I'm retired so don't need work outfits, and the only clothes I really get excited about are outdoor gear.

user1487365597 · 17/02/2017 21:33

Haircut- £600 (hair extension) once every 4 months

Nails - £80 every month

Make up/ nothing

Eyebrows - £5

Ele13 · 17/02/2017 21:48

I never thought of myself as terribly frugal around clothes, but I buy quite a lot second hand.

Last year I spent £450 on clothes and shoes; I have to wear smart clothes for work, but I buy a lot of phase eight etc on sale or second hand - shoes I had to buy a new work pair last year, as I only had one second hand pair, one pair that was 8 years old and one that was a mere 4 or so. But the pair I bought was new-to-me.

Make up, I think I maybe spend £15 per year?

Hair-cut, I try and remember to get it done once every 3 months, in reality it can't have been done for about 9 now. That's £9 per time.

Toiletries: generally branded, but on offer, so maybe spend £20 per year on these?

Perfume - one bottle every 7 or 8 years.

Nails - £0, Eyebrows - I lose a pair of tweezers about once every 3 years, so I guess £1 per year? Razors - mens, fairly cheap, maybe £5 per year?

So total: £500 to £530 ish depending how often I get my haircut.

I guess it might be nice to spend more, and this thread has reminded me not to feel guilty about it, but I do so much DIY and gardening that I assume things like getting my nails done would just be a total waste.

bunnylove99 · 17/02/2017 21:57

Hair - £25 for a trim every 6 weeks.
Make up & nail polish about £100 a year.
No salon visits for nails/brows/tan etc Shampoo & moisturiser etc, £50 per year. Clothes about £150 each end of season sale - only time I ever really shop.

junebirthdaygirl · 17/02/2017 22:37

Hair 60 euro every month for colour with extra 20 every two months for cut.
20 euro every weekend for blow-dry
Waxing 100 a year
Eyebrows 60 a year
Make up, not including toiletries 60 a year
Clothes 1000 a year approx
Get vouchers from dh Christmas and birthday
Did once spend 600 on laser with disappointing results.
Don't drink or smoke so luxury is hair.

WanderLustingLane · 18/02/2017 09:11

Not a lot currently, trying to save so had to make it backs.

Hair: red box dye every three weeks it's about £6

Eyebrows: had them tattooed on as a Xmas present last year, so just pluck any strays & they always look good. £0

Nails/toes: I invested in some good quality OPI polishes, top base coats, cuticle oils etc and my mum got me a foot spa machine for my birthday.
Maybe once a month I buy a new colour to build up my collection, so maybe £10-15 monthly.

Makeup: mine lasts for ages, so hard to put to monthly, every now and then I will buy a few new bits while shopping.

So my DIY beauty regime is roughly
£18-25 per month including all the above and few make up items if I fancy a new lipstick etc

Will probably be less in the future as I really don't need to keep buying new nail colours, I have quite a few already.

Giddyaunt18 · 18/02/2017 13:40

I would save money on the things you can do yourself, like nails. Keep them in a short square shape, moisturise regularly and polish as and when. Gel varnish is good. Save a fortune. Always remember that fashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it.

Spice22 · 18/02/2017 13:57

Totally jealous of KateLocks budget. Knowing me, is probably spend it all on bags and still look the same Blush

katelocks I get one keritin treatment in June just before the humidity kicks in. It lasts 6 months. I can't see how you would need it every two months. My hairdresser wouldn't let me do it when pregnant because of the chemicals. She also wouldn't let me have more than 3 treatments in a year because of the damage it does to your hair.

Kateallison16 · 19/02/2017 02:38

Well start of the year I bought a new wardrobe (outfits for every occasion, new jarmie sets, underwears and accessories) i expect they will do a while until i can buy summer clothes too.
I did the same with beauty products, i bought loads of decent shampoos, condionees and treatments (tigi, beach blonde etc). Stocked up on bath bombs and bubble baths too.
Skin care, i bought a load from body shop and elemis while they had sales on.
Make up, i went in a benefit binge and stocked up on bits i use everyday.

So basicall i stockpiled up. Ive spent about 2 grand but that will last me a good while now and covers a load of clothes that will last. Lets say 6 months - thats about 330 a month. For litterally everything i could need.

I do my own hair and own beauty treatments such as olaplex, skincare and any tanning or nails.
So i have no outgoings to professionals.

oobedobe · 19/02/2017 04:05

I am pretty low maintainance.
Two or three decent haircuts a year say $250 total
Make up $20-40 a year
Skincare just started a routine at 40 so prob going to be $150 per year, previously nothing
Eyebrows nothing
Nails maybe one or two pedicures a year $60
Clothes I love to shop, but careful about what I buy and look for bargains maybe $150 per month but sometimes $0
Definitely spending more than I used to but I am overhauling and trying to be more up to date/ stylish so that costs a bit!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 19/02/2017 04:13

I cut my own hair, don't do nails or make up, i live in £10 a pair jeans and £2 a go cami tops, the occasional £6 jumper in colder weather.
All in i probably spend £50 at most a year on clothes. A bottle or two of facial hair removal cream a year, one pack of razor blades, and generic fairly cheap fce wash/scrub/moisturiser.

So, £100 or less a year for everything.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 19/02/2017 04:16

Haircut - not regularly, but I spend about £60 when I do. Last cut was 6 months ago (I have very curly hair though so trim the frizzy ends myself)

Hair products - maybe £10 a month? I only use silicone and SLS free stuff but it tends to last for a while as I only wash it every week or so.

Make up - I am trying so hard not to spend anything right now Blush. I have been a bit addicted in the past and spent £100 a month. Of course this is not on anything I use regularly. I've cut back drastically and would say in the last year I've average maybe £10 a month.

Do my own eyebrows and nails so nail polish would be included in make up cost.

I have a capsule wardrobe so don't spend too much on clothing - I'd say maybe £400 over the year as I tend to buy loads of stuff at strategic times of the year.

Increase by at leat £250 though as I'm terrible for underestimating!

lljkk · 19/02/2017 10:38

I am not sure if anyone really spends < £100 a yr on clothes+shoes. I mean, I only buy stuff when I have nothing in the cupboard to wear, and then almost only from shops like Primark or charity shops, & even I spend more than £100/yr. It adds up to more than you think when you write absolutely everything down.

I am a scruff: get my hair cut only once a yr, no make up, etc. I suppose I sometimes notice when someone is especially well-groomed or very scruffy.

BertieBotts · 19/02/2017 12:09

I'm curious now. I'll have a look through my bank statements for the last year, I only every buy stuff on card so it should show up on there, the difficulty will be separating out what was for me and what was for DS/DH. But I think it's possible I spent less than £100 in the last year.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/02/2017 12:26

lljkk I definitely spend sub £100 - I remember exactly when I buy clothes because it's so rare. A pair of boots from ShoeZone costs about £9.00 and lasts most of a year. But even if I have to replace them that's about £60-80.

BertieBotts · 19/02/2017 12:26

Socks + Pants around €22 maybe up to €30 (can't remember what I bought last year vs year before)
Thermal undies back in Jan €12
Some long sleeved tops, maybe 3, say €15 max (primark)
Some strappy tops, 2, probably €8ish (primark again)
Scarf, gloves maybe €12
1 pair shoes €25
T shirt (from a friend) €2
T shirt (From primark) €3

I think that's it. And I've estimated high on the prices - e.g. I suspect the shoes were actually €15 but I can't remember whether DS's were €50 or €60. Altogether it's €105 which is about £90. It was probably a frugal year, I didn't buy any trousers or jumpers or more sturdy shoes but it's not like you do need to buy those things every year.

reallyanotherone · 19/02/2017 12:27

I've bought a 5 pack of pants in the last year.

Nothing else.

DragonMamma · 19/02/2017 12:37

Oh gosh, I'd say roughly:

Hair cut every couple of months - £30
Various waxing over the year - £120 or so as I go as and when I can be bothered.
Shampoo and conditioner at £10 each a time and that's once a month
Cleanser and moisturiser - I used the La Roche Posay stuff which is around £15 each a time.
Make up - £200 a year
Clothes - £1.5k a year. I work in professional services so I have a separate work wardrobe.
