To ask how much you spend on grooming/maintenance?

Hello all,

I was going to ask on Style&Beauty but figured the responses there would be quite skewed and so I came here where there would be unbiased responses and traffic.

At the train station yesterday I saw this young lady who looked very well put together. Her outfit was coordinated, nails done, eyebrows done, makeup done but not overly so. The thing that stood out the most though , was her hair. It looked lovely ; highlights and nice cut (ha can't explain well enough) and she just looked like someone who took pride of the way she looks. I've since spoken to my friend about this and the possible cost of such upkeep. That got me wondering how much others here spend on their grooming and upkeep.

Clothes; Makeup; Nails; Hair; Eyebrows; Eyelashes; you get the jist !

Hair: £25 cut & blow dry every 6-8 weeks + home hair dye every 2-3 weeks
Beautician: £0
Clothes, shoes, handbags: £800/yr at a guess - much more than I used to!
Makeup & Skincare: £100-£150 (guessing again)

I would be happy to spend more but I'm carrying too much weight and that makes me less inclined to. I made an active decision to spend more on clothes a couple of years ago but could still do with spending more - I tend to wear things out and DS commented a couple of weeks back that I wear the same things all the time! Now to work on some habits and maybe I can swap the excess I spend on food/drink to pull together a better look...

Bahh · 17/02/2017 15:15

I get my nails done monthly, that's £30. Hair trimmed monthly but I go cheap so only £20. I do need highlights redoing so if that's the case it's more like £70, maybe once every three months.

Makeup I top up as and when it runs out, tends to be foundation/powder/mascara and I like decent brands so that's probably £30 every six weeks or so. Other smaller stuff I tend to pick up from random places, I don't run out often and the quality isn't that important.

I love shopping so might buy myself one item a month or thereabouts but if I had my way I'd have a new wardrobe every few weeks Blush

BitchQueen90 · 17/02/2017 15:21

Hair £70 every 8 weeks, for trim and colour. My hair is very fine so it's cheaper to get done than those with long thick hair.

Acrylic nails £17 every month for infills.

HD brows £25 a month.

Spray tans £15 once every 3 weeks.

Clothes/shoes - not that much, probably £300 a year and I buy one designer handbag every year.

Makeup - about £300 a year but I use high end brands.

I do use expensive skin and haircare products. Shampoo and conditioner £17.50 and £20.50 respectively. Cleanser, toner and moisturiser come to £70.

CinnamonSweet · 17/02/2017 15:23

Itsbetterthanbox, yes I'm absolutely taking the piss, stopping those paying customers taking up those appointments at 9pm over a bottle of wine at the kitchen table.

No need for you to feign outrage on someone else's behalf.

Fwiw, it's called skill swapping.

Spice22 · 17/02/2017 16:12

Chipmunk you're absolutely right about perfume ! Luckily I don't spend any money on it as I always receive a bottle for Christmas/birthday and they last until the next one.

Yearly costs:
Nails -£40 So my own, but tend to get a gel polish when I go away
Hair- £450 getting hair done, but only about an extra £100 across the year on hair products.
Gym -£960
Skin products- about £400
Make up - about £300
Clothes- depends on type of holiday and events that crop over the year, etc
I don't get my brows/lashes done as fortunately don't need to.
I imagine costs will increase as I start to look at Botox/fillers and more expensive skin care.

PageStillNotFound404 · 17/02/2017 16:22

Perfume is my one extravagance - I love Jo Malone. I usually ask for some for Christmas/birthday but I usually buy myself at least a couple of bottles throughout the year too, so I probably spend about £150-£200 a year.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 17/02/2017 16:25

Hair - £50 every 8 weeks
Brows - £10 every 5/6 weeks
Make up - probably about £75 a year
Clothes - probably about £300 a year
Waxing - summer only - £30 a time
I don't get my nails done or have facials

Jaimx86 · 17/02/2017 16:26

witwootoodleoo what do you have done to your hair for £500? I'd like to improve my hair but that have cut/colour as I don't know what else is available.

Crispmonster1 · 17/02/2017 16:26

Not enough in my
Opinion!
Haircut £35 every 2 weeks
Eyebrows/ eyelashes £35 2 monthly
Makeup - mascara, eyeliner and bronzer £120 a year?
Clothes £200 a year unless I have an event in which case £ 400 full outfit
I look a mess most of the time. Have no imagination on my day to day look!

Katedotness1963 · 17/02/2017 16:31

Hair...last had it cut and coloured two years ago.
Nails...never had a manicure
Eyebrows...pluck them myself
Make up...bought a mascara last year
Skincare...been using a jar of Nivea for almost a year
Toiletries...stuff from the supermarket picked up while doing the shopping.
Perfume...still using the bottle I got for Christmas three years ago.
Clothes...haven't had anything new in about four years. Well a packet of pants and some socks through necessity.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/02/2017 16:32

Hair - decent cut every 10 weeks -£40.00 a time
Very basic Avon) make up (minimal), say £40 annually.
Work clothes (simple, smart M and S stuff), say £120 annually (I have a very small work wardrobe, only in the office twice a week so my trousers and cardigans last a few years).
Nails, only done for big events (weddings etc). Otherwise I do my own and use cheap Avon polish (4.50).
Hygienist at dentist twice a year £120.00.

SleepingBooty · 17/02/2017 16:34

I spend very little really but I do take care.
Hair £35 a month, roots colour and maybe the odd highlight
Nails - do my own, I have loads of polishes I've collected over the years.
Makeup - not any more than £50 per year, I stick to cheaper brands
Brows - £20 every 3 months or so.
Clothes £500 a year.

Eolian · 17/02/2017 16:36

Hardly anything. I wear make-up every day but cheapo Rimmel BB cream and concealer, and I own 2 lipsticks which I don't wear that often. Haircut maybe every 6 months (local cheap salon - £25). Aldi or Nivea moisturiser. Don't do nails, shave don't wax, do eyebrows myself (when I can be arsed). Tend to get perfume as birthday or Christmas presents, rarely buy it for myself. Would never in a million years consider Botox, fillers etc.

zukiecat · 17/02/2017 16:38

Nothing except maybe £4 a month on shampoo and conditioner

I don't have the money for luxuries

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 17/02/2017 16:40

Hair £20 every 8-12 months (short hair which should be cut more often Blush)

Clothes £10-20 per year

So £30-40 per year in total. I work in an office where I have to look smartish but I'm good at charity shops Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 17/02/2017 16:40

Oh and about £2 per month on shampoo

Tabbylady · 17/02/2017 16:41

Hair- cut and colour every 6 weeks £45

Shampoo- a fancy salon brand that costs me £20 a month

Nails- nothing. Never wear polish etc

Eyebrows/Lashes: nothing- do my own

Razors- maybe £5 a months on blades

Makeup and perfume- I only wear quite high end stuff and save buying this for when I'm abroad or strategically ask for it for birthdays and Christmas. Last year I got Clarins stuff that would go for about £150 here for $45 in an outlet! Don't wear full makeup every day though.

Clothes- again, usually buy when abroad, but probably about £500 maximum a year. Occasional big spend for special occasions.

BUT I do spend £190 a month on gym and 2x weekly personal training sessions. I figure that's more about long-term health too though so I excuse myself!!

geordiedench · 17/02/2017 16:41

Haircuts - about £200 a year. I only go three times a year but no local salon charges less than £70 for a cut and blow dry.
Eyebrows - £20 a year (local Superdrug!)
Skincare - £120 a year - I have dry skin so no option
Make up - £60 a year
Hair products - £60 a year - never get hair coloured professionally but do use blonde shampoo to keep it bright.
Clothes and shoes - £600 a year.
Nails - less than £5 a year. I have really bad flaky nails and never manage to look after them. Too embarrassed to get a manicure.

So that's just over £1k a year. I look very low maintenance. Pretty scruffy most of the time, but I do wear makeup every day as without it people always think I'm ill.

Bloopbleep · 17/02/2017 16:42

Virtually nothing. I can't be bothered getting my hair cut regularly (or even yearly). I don't wear makeup or do nails or eyebrows and my clothes are all 10+years old. I buy a can of deodorant every few months and one pair of trainers a year if I'm feeling flush

Blackfellpony · 17/02/2017 16:48

Used to be hardly anything at all but I recently discovered lip fillers at £200 which last around 4-5months.

Feel so so much better about myself so it's worth every penny.

shazkiwi · 17/02/2017 16:53

I don't spend much:
Hair £20 every 6 weeks
Clothes & shoes (guesstimate) £300 per year
I use an epilator for hair removal so no waxing costs. No makeup, moisturiser, tanning products or perfume.
Sunscreen £10 per summer
Nail polish £6 one bottle per year for summertime toenails.

likeacrow · 17/02/2017 16:56

Hair cut: £60-70 every 8-10 weeks, although I'm going to be looking for somewhere cheaper now I'm on maternity
Hair colour: £10 approx on home dye every 8-10 weeks
Eyebrows: £21 wax & tint every 4-6 weeks
Lip wax: £10 maybe every 12 weeks or just when it needs it, not often

All other hair removal do myself at home.
Makeup, maybe £100-150 per year. An expensive haul of Clarins foundation/concealer etc which will last me ages then Rimmel and other cheaper brands for lip gloss, etc.
Massage: £20 every 3 months or so. Really helps with shoulder and neck pain.
Nails: £30 on shellac plus cost of removal 2-3 times a year for holidays/special occasions.

I can see me cutting back on a lot of these costs once baby arrives, but there is a lot to be said for spending money on things that make you feel good.

Pinkponiesrock · 17/02/2017 17:03

I would have definitely described myself a low maintenance until I posted on this thread and read the replies Blush
I think I was at one point when drowning in the madness of 3 under 5's but I feel so much better now to know that what you see actually reflects the person I am!
