To ask how much you spend on grooming/maintenance?

Hello all,

I was going to ask on Style&Beauty but figured the responses there would be quite skewed and so I came here where there would be unbiased responses and traffic.

At the train station yesterday I saw this young lady who looked very well put together. Her outfit was coordinated, nails done, eyebrows done, makeup done but not overly so. The thing that stood out the most though , was her hair. It looked lovely ; highlights and nice cut (ha can't explain well enough) and she just looked like someone who took pride of the way she looks. I've since spoken to my friend about this and the possible cost of such upkeep. That got me wondering how much others here spend on their grooming and upkeep.

Clothes; Makeup; Nails; Hair; Eyebrows; Eyelashes; you get the jist !

Hair cut every 16 weeks - £25
Hair cut and colour every 16 weeks - £90
Eyebrow threading every 4 weeks - £3
Monthly clothes spend of maybe £50?
Wax every couple of months (when going on holiday!) - £25.
Makeup - £100 a year?

Averages out at just under £100 per month. I do my own nails, and despite being in my thirties and fully expecting to be a grownup by now, I don't actually have a skincare routine Blush

369thegoosedrankwine · 17/02/2017 14:21

Hair, cut and colour £50 every 6 weeks.

Eyebrows threaded every other month.

Nothing on nails, I do them myself.

Pedicure and holiday wax - once a year £50.

I don't have facials etc..not my thing. I prefer to use decent products myself at home.

I spend about £40 on skin care and makeup a month. I wear make up most days.

Clothes, maybe around £1.5 to 2k a year as an estimate. Tend to buy one or two expensive things that last forever and then monthly some new items. This month has been a few long sleeved tips from next and new shoes for work.

I'm sometimes really well put together sometimes running around in begging a and trainers.

369thegoosedrankwine · 17/02/2017 14:22

In jeggings.... not begging

Pinkponiesrock · 17/02/2017 14:24

£130 every couple on hair, freehand balayage and the most amazing cut for curly hair. After years of triangular curly cuts I'll never go anywhere else ever again!
£20 a month on threading and tint for my brows.
£10 for a quick tidy up for my nails once a month, I have fab nails, got to have something going for me Wink
£50 every bloody month for a Brazilian or a Hollywood, it grows like nobody's business!!
Make up, no idea really! I buy in big batches but probably £50 average a month, all mid to the lower high end products, Bareminerals, MAC, NARS, YSL, Clinique.
Clothes, I actually dread to think! Not a huge spender in terms of frequency but I like really well cut, well made clothes.
Probably spend much more on sports wear to be honest, between riding and running there is no shortage of stuff I 'need'!
I like to think I'm pretty well groomed, I feel awful, really self conscious and uncomfortable if I know I don't look good so I go that extra bit as it impacts on my mindset for the whole day otherwise.

Newtssuitcase · 17/02/2017 14:26

I'm very groomed but do it reasonably cheaply.

Hair every 4 months - £120 (£30 a month)
Hair colour top up (home semi) - £6 per month
make up (I wear full make up every day) - about £10 a month on average
moisturisers/serum - about £5 a month when averaged
botox - £120 every 4 months so £30 a month
eyebrows, nails I do myself. Eyelashes are my own.
clothes I buy infrequently - perhaps averaging £50 a month. I need to update my jewellery since it is all a bit tatty.

I do however have an enormous stash of lotions and potions and make up and I am deliberately working my way through the body lotions in particular. I reckon I'd have enough eyeshadow to last the next five years (albeit I might end up wearing some different colours left over from sets) and that's even though I wear it every single day.

I am now hitting that stage where I need to make more of an effort and so I might start having regular treatments.

deblet · 17/02/2017 14:28

I am going back to a proper job soon. When people say good quality make up which brands do you refer to? Thanks

showmeislands · 17/02/2017 14:28

Hair about £60 every 2-3/months
Nails £25 shellac manicure every 2 weeks
Skin care £40/month
Make up £50/month
Clothes and shoes - £300/month
I shave rather than wax
Have the odd facial but it's not regular, so maybe £100 a year

It's a fair bit, but can afford it and enjoy it.
Would love to have regular blow dries but that feels like too much of an indulgence, alas!

CinnamonSweet · 17/02/2017 14:34

Hair every 2 month, cut & highlights approx £70.
Facial every few month £0 (friends a beautician)
Nails every fortnight £0 (see above)
Eyebrows are microbraded (£400) needs topping up every 18 month, pluck them myself
Makeup varies each month depending on what I need, average out to around £60 a month
Creams and lotions approx £20-£30
Clothes are highstreet, depends on what I need for new season, I'm too old for fast fashion so general go for pieces I can style for years probably around £80-£150 a month.

Crispbutty · 17/02/2017 14:35

Nothing really other than basic toiletries.

Don't wear make up very often. Have spent £20 in last two years on a mascara and tinted moisturiser.

Can't afford new clothes at the moment but have chefs whites for work provided by employer so make do with clothes I have. Live in jeans and t shirts anyway.

Nails have to be short and clean for work so no manicuring needed.

I used to live in London and felt a lot more pressure to be more groomed and spent a lot on it then but since moving to Devon last year life is a lot more laid back and I love it.

PageStillNotFound404 · 17/02/2017 14:39

Hair: £30 every 3 months or so for straightforward cut & blow dry. I don't really style my hair so don't spend on products beyond shampoo.

Make up: negligible; I only wear make up for the odd night out/wedding etc.

Nails: couple of new nail varnishes a year max. I rarely bother painting them but when I do, I do it myself.

Skincare: cleansing wipes and a low/mid-range moisturiser with the highest SPF I can find. I am religious about my moisturiser so I do buy several a year.

Facials/eyebrows/eyelashes: N/A - don't bother

Pedicures/waxing/anything else: N/A - do my own toenails and any deforestation needed

Clothes: prob £300 or so a year max. I mostly buy from charity shops but usually treat myself to a couple of new dresses a year.

I'm really low maintenance and never look 'groomed', but I'm clean and smart in an understated / au naturel way - no trailing hems, loose threads or scuffed heels and no greasy unbrushed hair or ragged dirty nails.

flirtygirl · 17/02/2017 14:40

I started to look after myself again last year after being worn down by stbexh.

Hair including twice yearly blowdry around £200 per year
Makeup and nailpolish - £120 per year
Eyebrows - nothing , as do my own.
Lashes - Nothing but im researching growth serums.
Toiletries including sanitary, skincare and tissue etc - £200 per year but for whole family.
Clothing - £250 per year , £150 if i do a 6 month no spend.
Bags and shoes - £200 per year but less if i do a no spend.

I like to look nice and always did but got worn down by life and i spent a few years in the wilderness, most people said you like nice in this period but it wasnt how i wanted to look.

Im still not back to being me, i like unusual hairstyles and to look edgy so my spend will increase, espescially on my hair.

itsbetterthanabox · 17/02/2017 14:48

Hair- maybe 300 a year
Makeup- average 150 a year
Nails- I'm a beauty therapist and nail tech so do my own/get them done free at work.
Brows and upper lip- same as above.
Waxing- £12-14 every 6 weeks half leg wax
Lashes- I get a lash lift and tint every 8 weeks but again usually free at work. Although my colleague who does them has just left so I'll probably get it done somewhere next time. It's £35-40.

itsbetterthanabox · 17/02/2017 14:49

Forgot ones!
Clothes- not much maybe 300 a year
An extra 100 on shoes

Spice22 · 17/02/2017 14:51

Thankyou for all the responses. So interesting to read them all.

I want to start with nails - £20 every two weeks, so £40 a month. Clothes and makeup are so random I would t be able to estimate (last year it averaged £100 a month, combined).

I figure I'll let myself get used to spending £40 a month on nails and then add something else after that ; maybe hair.

I'm a SAHM in an area where people tend to look reasonably "well-groomed", whether they go to work or not (Chelsea, London). I think I'm fairly low-maintenance for this area. Regular expenses would be -

Hair cut / semi-permanent colour - under £200 every 6-7 weeks. I have dark brown, quite thick hair and just started colouring in the last 12 months (now aged 40) - since the greys started!

Hollywood Wax - about £50 as and when needed, though I can go much longer between sessions now as the hair has become much finer. I do my own eyebrows and hsd legs lasered years ago (god knows how much that cost).

Teeth whitening every so often (can't remember how much that was).

I rarely do facials etc as don't have any specific skin problems. No point in eyelash tints as eyelashes are black anyway.

Gel nails every 2 weeks at £30 I think.

I will probably get forehead botox quite soon to smooth horizontal lines that I'm beginning to notice. Then it will be a slippery slope from there, no doubt!

I use Estée Lauder EE cream over one of their serums daily. Black mascara and eyeliner -whatever catches my eye in Harvey Nichols or Boots!

I do 1:1 Pilates 3 times a week which works out around £35 per session but well worth it!

I don't spend loads of clothes but spend a bit more on things that will last - high street shops like Maje, Question Air, Claudie Pierlot, Alice and Olivia, Sandro, etc. I don't really like to look obviously designer, so mix those kind of items with high street items.

itsbetterthanabox · 17/02/2017 14:52

Cinnamon
You don't pay your friend for her to do your nails every 2 weeks?!
That's her livelihood. You are taking the piss. Poor woman she's being walked all over.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/02/2017 14:53

Hair - £9 every 4 weeks - literally just a trim
Eyelash extensions - £25 every 3/4 weeks
HD brows - £25 every 3/4 weeks
Make up/skincare - £50 every month or so
Nails - £20 every 4 weeks
Clothes - Maybe £30 average a month? I rarely go shopping

Sooo... Around £160 a month. I guess.
£1920 a year.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/02/2017 14:54

I have definitely underestimated clothes. I don't know what I spend tbh!

LiefieLiefie · 17/02/2017 14:54

Just about to start a professional job after 2 years as a student.

Clothes - £1k.
Hair - £110 cut and colour every 4 months. Probably will get this down to £35 just for a cut as I'm growing out my highlights.
Nails - £50 maybe. I get the odd set of acrylics or gel nails every so often. Maybe £10 of that on nail polish etc.
Nothing on waxing, eyebrows etc.Do that myself.
Skincare - £200
Make up - £200

I'm young, have good skin, naturally have good hair, no kids, don't smoke/drink/sunbathe, get tons of sleep so I have loads of free time outside of work and studying to pamper myself and make my appearance a priority. I know that I'm lucky to be able to do so.

Purplebluebird · 17/02/2017 14:55

Hair twice a year £45 each time. I don't dye mine, as it has a lovely gingery colour already :)

Eyebrows 4 times a year: £18 each time. They are almost blonde so I get them tinted a tiny bit, and waxed. Hate threading, ouch.

Clothes maybe 3 times a year, and spend as little as possible, often go to Primark. Maybe £200 a year.

My nails are terrible, and I don't wear make up every day (SAHM). When I do it's pretty basic too, as I'm not great with it. However I do buy fairly expensive brands on the rare occasion I have to buy something new. Don't use fake eyelashes either, but would love to occasionally, I just can't get them to stick!

Ohb0llocks · 17/02/2017 14:55

Hair - nothing I'm a trainee hairdresser
Nails - nothing (qualified tech)
Clothes - haven't spent anything in ages but I have £220 to spend shopping tomorrow!!

EmeraldScorn · 17/02/2017 14:55

Nails - About £20 on clear polish a year.
Eyebrows - £15 every 6 weeks.
Toiletries - About £25 a month.
Hair - £80 twice a year.
Skin Care - About £100 a year.
Makeup - About £500 a year.
Clothes/Shoes - About £600/£700 a year.

To be honest I spend money that I don't need to spend on "extra" make up products just "to try", it is a bit of a waste but I justify it by not spending much on eyebrows/nails etc and to be honest I love my big boxes of collective make up brands that I switch and change often.

Camomila · 17/02/2017 14:56

Very little, I only really wear make up for special occasions like weddings and I usually cut my hair myself (It's long and curly and all one length so it's easy to tidy up). I don't really use any 'products' apart from plain shower gel and shampoo etc as they all make me itchy. I just buy them in the supermarket shop.

Clothes wise I'm on maternity leave so haven't needed anything apart from to replace things like socks, vest tops and one pair of jeans...even then the 'fanciest' places I shop are only M&S or Debenhams.

I'm going back to work soon (city work place but not client facing) and will probably spend £100-£200 on some new bits as I wore everything as long as I could when I was pregnant and they all got stretched out of shape.

emsler · 17/02/2017 14:57

@deblet I absolutely love Laura Mercier, Estee Lauder and Clinique. All a bit more expensive but not crazy. Smashbox's primers are great. Mac are the best for lipstick imho. When I can afford it I treat myself to something from Chanel, Dior or Charlotte Tilbury.

@flirtygirl If you go for a lash serum, I'd recommend Revitalash - it's more expensive than the others but works SO much better.

greymice · 17/02/2017 15:01

Hair - £10 a year averaged out (rarely get it cut, and sometimes a friend does it for free)
Makeup - £20 a year averaged out (I only buy products when they run out and they last for ages).
Skincare - £30 a year
Botox - £1400 a year Blush
I never have any other treatments (nails, brows, lashes, facials, pedicures, waxing). I don't even have a gym membership, I just work out in my living room. But I love my Botox and I justify it by going budget/nil on everything else.
