To ask how much you spend on grooming/maintenance?

Hello all,

I was going to ask on Style&Beauty but figured the responses there would be quite skewed and so I came here where there would be unbiased responses and traffic.

At the train station yesterday I saw this young lady who looked very well put together. Her outfit was coordinated, nails done, eyebrows done, makeup done but not overly so. The thing that stood out the most though , was her hair. It looked lovely ; highlights and nice cut (ha can't explain well enough) and she just looked like someone who took pride of the way she looks. I've since spoken to my friend about this and the possible cost of such upkeep. That got me wondering how much others here spend on their grooming and upkeep.

Clothes; Makeup; Nails; Hair; Eyebrows; Eyelashes; you get the jist !

I get my hair cut once every 2-3 years and don't get it coloured. I do style it every day and care for it though. I buy fairly basic shampoo and conditioner and have a heat spray and hairspray. So for hair, maybe £10/month all told.
I wear make up daily but it's only stuff from boots and I probably spend £20 ish once every couple of months on maintaining a basic foundation, eye palette, eyeliner, mascara regime. That's all I wear though. So make up £10/month all told.
I don't use skin care products really, I have make up remover wash and aloe Vera moisturiser for when my skin is a bit dry. Very little spend.
I don't wear nail polish or have my nails done. I don't get waxed or threaded. I do buy razors (£3/month) but I pluck my own eyebrows and shave my own legs.
I've never had a facial.

I can't see it being more than £30 a month, honestly, all in.

HelgaHufflepuff76 · 17/02/2017 17:12

Hair: nothing, I trim it myself, occasionally get hairdresser friend to cut it, so £0
Clothes: about £50 a year. Would probably be a new pair of jeans, new underwear.
Make up: about £20 a year. Don't wear much.
I have never been for any kind of beauty treatment in my life. I buy face packs scrubs and moisturiser though.

It seems I'm very low maintenance then!
Bit surprised with some of the other replies tbh. Such a lot of money spent. It's like a different world!!

Katelocks · 17/02/2017 17:19

I spend too much. I enjoy the treatments but I don't think it make me look any more polished than women who spend less.

Hair £250 per month (cut, colour monthly, keratin every 2 months)
Manicure / pedicure £140 per month (weekly manicure / pedicure)
Facial / massage monthly £150 per month
Threading £20 per month
Personal Trainer £500 per month
Shampoo, skin care, make up £300 per month.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 17/02/2017 17:22

Hair: £150 twice a year? I have a low maintenance cut & colour (brunette mid length with a bit of blonde subtly in underneath/ends)
Waxing: £65 every 6 weeks
Eyebrows: £5 monthly threading
Nails: £30-50 monthly mani/pedi/both

Clothes: I go through phases of buying nothing and then spending loads in one go. I would like to dress smarter for work but I love comfy jumpers, so tend to just wear that with black jeans or trousers and then add heels if I can be arsed. I really admire people who make an effort every day! I'm so lazy.

Make up : replaced as needed, probably £100-200 per year? Including face cream etc it's more.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 17/02/2017 17:22

Oh and gym / class memberships over £100 per month

TheGrumpySquirrel · 17/02/2017 17:23

I'd love to have Botox for my frown line but I'm too scared!

longandshortofit · 17/02/2017 17:25

I think my spend on clothes is about £200 per month. That's for mainly Debenhams/Next quality.
I spend £50 on a good haircut every 6 weeks.
And about £50 per month on skincare and make up.

I am not noticeably well groomed. To be so, I'd need to spend about another £60 a month on beauty treatments, possibly an extra £100 a month in clothes (partly on alterations and tailoring), double my skincare spend and triple the amount of time I spent on all the above.

PageStillNotFound404 · 17/02/2017 17:26

TheGrumpySquirrel scarves are a great way of instantly smartening up an outfit and making similar outfits look different. I love them and have loads in different colours/patterns.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 17/02/2017 17:28

Thanks page404 you've reminded me I have a bright yellow acne scarf which I love and did perform this function well.. I will have a look for others

Strokethefurrywall · 17/02/2017 17:41

Mine is pretty flexible as I don't religiously get anything done every month. I used to get facials every month but had few months working lates and just didn't pick it back up again.
But if I was going to tot up:

Keratin and cut - $250 (every 3 months)
Juverderm - $500 (once per year)
Make up - $65 (every couple of months)
Skincare - $200 (every couple of months)
Nails - $35 (rarely because I can never be bothered)
Waxing - $0 (live in Caribbean, easier to just shave in the shower)
Clothes - $varies (depending on where travelling to and season)

I don't look polished or groomed (at least I don't feel it) most of the time. If I do school run wearing a decent dress and heels and my hair is washed and straightened then yes. I can probably maintain this for 3 out of 5 school days.

The rest of the time I look like hammered shit, but I don't care enough to polish myself!

Klaphat · 17/02/2017 17:49

Clothes: About £250 a year.
Would be less, but in the last two years I've spent around £510, which includes about £150-200 on clothes and shoes for a holiday to a very hot place I suddenly realised I had absolutely nothing I could wear for without dying of heat, and also includes a few purchases of smaller clothes while I was losing weight and my stuff was starting to hang off me - otherwise I might not have spent as much.

Makeup: £20
This only by taking an average of the last 8 or so years, as I bought some stuff to wear at my wedding. Otherwise I have worn make-up about once a year. Maybe not even that.

Nails: £0

Hair: £20-40, depending on whether I get it cut once or twice in the year.

Eyebrows: £0
Eyelashes: £0
I realise I might be tempted to spend money on these two if I had fairer hair.

So overall about £300 a year. Would like it to be less, actually. My husband doesn't spend this much on his appearance. Though I do prefer to have clothing that is in good condition and looks tidy. DH's jeans, for example, are thicker and less likely to wear as fast, which means I have to spend more in comparison.

Racheyg · 17/02/2017 17:56

Hair every 8 weeks = £90.00
Nails every 2 weeks = £25.00
Eyebrows every 4 weeks =£8.00
Laser hair removal every 4 weeks = £100.00 (special offer)

I am trying to save so cutting out my nails and I have already stopped getting Brazilian blow dry. Which has reduced my total. Hopefully I only need 5 more sessions of laser till I'm hair free Grin

absolutelynotfabulous · 17/02/2017 18:01

Hair: £35 highlights x 3.
Cuts: Couple of times @ £10.
Nails: do my own (everyday).
Makeup: everyday; nothing special....£200 pa including skin stuff.
Clothes: some ebay stuff, some new @ 500pa (?).
I try and get as much use as I can from clothes and never buy anything spontaneously.

Giddyaunt18 · 17/02/2017 18:17

Hair cut and foils once every 9 weeks - £72
Everything else i do myself(waxing, nails occasionally, eyebrow plucking)
I wear make-up every day but don't spend much on it, maybe £10 per month max to include skincare.

restofthetimes · 17/02/2017 18:18

Suddenly loads as I need botox and hair colours - its a big Shock

Giddyaunt18 · 17/02/2017 18:20

No idea how much I spend on clothes but not much. I hate clothes shopping. I buy when I need things and don't buy designer. However I am fairly regularly told I look good/trendy/glam!!!!! Grin Think I get it from my mum, always stylish on a budget!

spankhurst · 17/02/2017 18:25

Hair probably £150 a year.
Make up probably £80 a year.
Clothes about £300 year. I get a lot on Ebay.
Don't get nails or anything else done.

MsAwesomeDragon · 17/02/2017 18:25

Hair cut: maybe once a year, sometimes 18 months go by, £25.
Clothes: £300-£400 per year, I mostly wear supermarket clothes but get some work clothes from sales in debenhams/next. Underwear is generally my biggest expense as you can't get cheap, comfortable, well-fitting bras for my size, they tend to be expensive.

That's about it. I just don't care enough about personal grooming to do anything more than ensuring I'm clean and tidy. No make up, no expensive (and generally time consuming to make sure they sit right) hair cuts, no manicures, etc.

JayzuzMaryJoseph · 17/02/2017 18:26

Hair & Beauty
Haircut 3 x year - £80 a pop, so thats £240 a year
Colour at home every 6 weeks - approx £60 a year
Weekly gel/acrylic manicure = £20
Pedicure once a month (winter) and weekly (summer) - £22 a pop
Eyebrow threading and upper lip moustache wax every 6 weeks £20
Fake tan at home = I get through about 6 bottles a year at £20 each

Make-up - a lot of cheap brands, a couple of pricey ones - I reckon spend abut £200 a year

Toiletries - same as above - probably racks up to about £250 a year though

Perfume - serious habit. I've spent £150 in 217 alone

Clothes

Too much! I spent 3k on clothes and shoes last year.

Yikes Blush

Aoibhe · 17/02/2017 18:26

Hair cut & highlights every 12 weeks £70
Eyebrows every 3 weeks £10
Nails once a month £25
Clothes & shoes £500 year
Makeup £100 year

That's more than I had realised

spankhurst · 17/02/2017 18:26

..I would say I look put-together and presentable more often than not.

PeachOwl · 17/02/2017 18:27

I worked it out annually so:
Hair; £50 - I only get it cut twice as I changed to a low maintenance style a couple of years ago.
Make up; £100 - hopefully less now I've found a high street dupe for my foundation and got naked palettes for the last few xmases
Nails/eyebrows /lashes etc ; nothing as I do I myself and usually ask for new expensive polishes as birthday /Xmas gifts
Clothes; £300 max as I have a capsule work wardrobe of pencil skirts and 'silk' blouses which I often sew myself so just need a new pair of work shoes each year which are usually new look.
Skincare; £40 - I oil cleanse so much of that is essential oils which do last and I use them to do my own facials.
I'm told I'm very well groomed but I think that's because I'm lucky enough to have gorgeous swishy hair naturally and have spent hours and hours practising fairly natural make up and have either perfect nail polish or bare but nicely filed nails (with a lovely sheen of vaseline Smile)!
I'm going to appreciate it more now having seen how much some of you spend!

Seryph · 17/02/2017 18:30

Hair: Maybe £30 a year depending on how many times I dye it, but I have dreadlocks and I dye them myself. I also cut DP's hair for him too.
Clothes: Probably £50-100 a year depending on how quickly I kill my newest boots, but mostly I have supermarket jeans and Primark leggings and tops. Anything expensive (over £25-30) I would ask for from family for xmas/bday.
Make up: £20 a year, I have quite a large selection of stuff, but only use it for actual events so things only need topping up rarely.
Nails: Nothing
Eyebrows: Nothing

Beyond that I buy my toiletries from Lush, and they last bloody ages so £30 every 4-6 months or so does all my face/body/shampoo/etc. Then a couple of quid on toothpaste whenever it runs out.

I can be extremely scruffy, I'd rather be comfortable than fit in. I do dress up sometimes though!

newventurermum · 17/02/2017 18:34

I'm quite a diy person and I much prefer to do my own grooming then go to salons, spend a fortune and sometimes not be completely happy about the output. For many times I had to give a few touches after going to professionals to make results to my standard, so I just gave up and a lot of the grooming I do myself at home ;)

Hair cut every 10-12 weeks - £30 (saloon)
Nails - nothing - I do them myself
Eyebrows - nothing - I do them myself
Eyelashes - nothing
Make-up - £50-£100 / year on products
Hair colour every 16 weeks - £6 (price of the dye and I also do it myself)
Wax every couple of weeks - nothing - i do it myself

SuperFlyHigh · 17/02/2017 18:35

Hair cut and colour every 6-8 week £150

Eyebrows and other waxing about £40-£50 every 4-5 weeks

Facials rarely as I do them myself, massages I'm also really fussy about. Last one at a naice spa was awful...

Pedicures about 4-5 times a year £45 a go, manicures the same. I do them myself at other times.

Spa days £100-£200 every few months and any extras on top.

Clothes God knows, try not to spend too much but guessing £500 easily a year, probably more, I do like nice coats and the occasional designer piece which would put that figure up. I do also investment buy so if I see a really nice pair of suede boots at £250-£300 then I buy them, try to get in sales though.

Toiletries vary from £10-£20 or more a month, I like clarins facial oils (the booster etc) which are £30 a go. I chop and change from nicer to cheaper stuff though!

Yoga classes are £20 for 3 (1 x a week) but I now run. Every other exercise class I pay as I go (thinking of joining a gym) which is £7/£8 per class.
