It's a bigly Trump thread. Another beauty. But you don't need to know what's in it. I don't have to tell you. So there.

There was a press conference. It was interesting.

Did anyone listen to Radio 4 this morning. They almost didn't know how to handle it. Trying to maintain BBC impartiality while clearly wanting to shout 'The Emperor has no clothes on'. Then a horrible Trump apologist from The Daily Mail going on about media bias against Trump!

originalbiglymavis · 17/02/2017 10:14

I heard that. Who was that creature? I'm sure I could hear laughing too.

Put me off my cornflakes.

JessiCake · 17/02/2017 10:15

I was trying to explain gaslighting to my husband this morning in the wake of y'day's atrocity.

Am I actually getting this right: DT stood up in front of the entire world and told everyone he'd be perfectly happy to be criticised if he had done anything worth criticising, but in fact he hadn't and the fault all lies with the people criticising him?

This is gaslighting the entire planet, right?

At least, trying to.

I made the awful mistake of glancing at the Daily Mail comments section (having spent the last week getting excited that he was going to be impeached every time I glanced at my usual sources of news - the independent and guardian, which are fab but just confirm my every bias) and it is shocking.

There are actually people LOVED him at that press conference. Who have been well and truly fucking gaslit. Lots of hahahahahahaha, lefty liberal moaning, well WE WON hahahahahaha. As if winning is the end game. Rather than, you know, governing.

Also, there is a LOT of crowing about the 'media' (for which I honestly think some people just think 'Jews and commies,' tbh) being 'schooled.'

Does it not matter to them that the manner the media is being 'schooled' in is nothing but rude, condescending and - most of all - rambling and incoherent? I'm not a massive fan of journalists myself but if you're going to 'school' anybody in anything, shouldn't you do it in a relatively reasoned manner WITH WORDS THAT ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE AND IN AN ORDER THAT DOESN'T CONTRAVENE BASIC GRAMMATICAL ENGLISH??????????

How DARE the president of a supposed first world democracy speak publically (or tbf even privately) like this to anyone? I don't speak that way to the kids outside in the street if they chuck a ball too near my car. I would be HORRIFIED if a teacher spoke to my child that way at school. High-handed, 'quiet, quiet, quiet' when someone tries to point out you've wilfully misunderstood them, 'sit down' when you don't like what someone is asking, 'another beauty!', sarkily, when someone stands up to DO THEIR JOB and ask you a question... it's appalling and unprofessional and frankly inhumane.

This even without the fact of the gaslighting and the lies and the avoiding of giving straight answers.

Just his MANNER, alone, should disqualify him from being so much as a dog-walker, let alone the leader (ha!) of the free world.

Ugh ugh and triple ugh. Bigly.

originalbiglymavis · 17/02/2017 10:19

He is very undignified. Why would a country want a own to represent them? Maybe we should vote in Jim Davidson or Mr tumble?

MercyMyJewels · 17/02/2017 10:20

It was Peter Oborne Mavis, the formerly respected Telegraph journalist and now, well, Daily Mail person

Lweji · 17/02/2017 10:20

He definitely has a fan base and there will always be enough unhinged people.
I'm just hoping that a majority will eventually decide he's not fit.

peaceout · 17/02/2017 10:23

Maybe he is America's rotten side made flesh
Grotesque, vainglorious and stupid, he was just inevitable, vomited up from her corrupted guts when she just couldn't hold him down any longer

Lweji · 17/02/2017 10:25

I don't get that 306 statement.
He knows it's not the biggest win, he could be easily challenged as he was. Why lie so blatantly?
This alone suggests he's not quite right.

peaceout · 17/02/2017 10:26

Maybe trump is what America really is?

hackmum · 17/02/2017 10:31

echt: " I think there's something not quite right in what, for want of a better word, I must call his brain."

I've been wondering that. He's clearly not the sharpest tool in the box. But I do think there might be something more, something actually wrong in a clinical sense. His vocabulary is tiny. His sentences are incoherent. His tweets are full of spelling mistakes. There's a video somewhere of him being repeatedly asked by his lawyer to read a document, and him repeatedly refusing, supposedly on the grounds that he doesn't have his glasses on him (what glasses?). There's another video where he's introducing Rudi Giuliani in a meeting, and he looks round the room to see Giuliani, and it turns out Giuliani is sitting directly in front of him.

Then there's the stuff like telling out-and-out lies like the one about getting the biggest electoral college vote ever, which is easily and instantly disprovable. He operates at the level of a not very bright eight-year old. It just doesn't seem normal.

AndHoldTheBun · 17/02/2017 10:32

Peaceout, that's a scary and depressing thought!

Brillig · 17/02/2017 10:35

The thing for me (in a whole universe of uncomfortable) is that after last night's horror-show it just reinforces the growing conviction that an (ahem) unwell person is parading his delusions before the world in a way that is catastrophic on so many levels. And his 'handlers', for want of a better word, cannot be unaware of any of this, however much they try and bluster. The entire planet can see it.

Dh and I even had a panicky talk about access to the nuclear codes in the infamous suitcase. He concluded by saying, 'well, hopefully his people have substituted a dummy one so if he pushed the button, it would be like those comedy guns firing a bit of printed cloth that says 'BANG!’'

Cold comfort, really. It's literally unbelievable. Something will have to happen, this cannot continue, surely?

peaceout · 17/02/2017 10:38

Assuming he has some kind of cognitive deficit or impairment surely the stress of the current situation will cause him to completely fall apart very soon?

JessiCake · 17/02/2017 10:39

hackmum, that insight about him operating at the level of a nt very bright 8 year old is spot on.

Instantly reminded me of a few of my brother's friends when they were that age, specifically the less bright, bullying, bragadoccio types, and it's so true.

Of course, it's just possible he's a genius. Because for the time being (at least) the Flynn/Russia stuff is off the front pages and the entire world is tlaking about his mental health. Which is a great side-show (by great, I obviously mean horrific) but which distracts from the really serious, possibly (hopefully!!!) impeachment-worthy stuff.

I sort of wish the entire press corps would get together before the next conference and make an agreement that if (when) DT doesn't answer a question, the next journo called on simply stands up and repeats the same question and asks for a proper answer.

His head might explode (she said, hopefully...)?

pinboard · 17/02/2017 10:40

"YOU KNOW WHAT URANIUM IS RIGHT? IT'S A THING CALLED NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND OTHER THINGS. LIKE LOTS OF THINGS ARE DONE WITH URANIUM, INCLUDING SOME BAD THINGS."

"NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST WOULD BE LIKE NO OTHER"

"I CANT BELIEVE I'M SAYING I'M A POLITICAN BUT I GUESS I AM NOW"

Sorry to post in BIGLY CAPS like Trump, but I just cant get my breath.

Are there memes yet???

peaceout · 17/02/2017 10:41

At some point will those still now supporting him wake up?
If they do then they will surely be very angry?

Natsku · 17/02/2017 10:42

I'm on an American-based forum and so many on there are actually saying that Trump was brilliant in that presser, and it was the slickest one they've ever seen. Its like its some kind of mass delusion going on with Trump supporters.

catgirl1976 · 17/02/2017 10:47

I think everyone needs to complete this

action.trump2016.com/trump-mms-survey/

I am shocked they are even conducting this survey

"Stop the Main Stream Media" it's called. Might as well be called "Destroy The Free Press"

Any 5 digit number will serve as a zip code

peaceout · 17/02/2017 10:50

so many on there are actually saying that Trump was brilliant in that presser, and it was the slickest one they've ever seen

Is it that his supporters are very dim, or does he manage to appeal to them so powerfully on an emotional or instinctive level that they are compelled to support him no matter what?
Are there similarities with religious cults, is he a kind of guru?

pinboard · 17/02/2017 10:53

peaceout
I did read something recently about his verbal delivery being similar to Jim Jones? I will see if I can find it...

Brillig · 17/02/2017 10:53

By the way, someone upthread mentioned SCROTUS's business credentials. He inherited all his wealth from his father. He still managed to file for bankruptcy 4 times in 25 years.....in the casino business. The best businessman, the BEST. BIGLY.

i read something online a couple of weeks ago (can't find the link now but I think it was on HuffPo) that this fabled business brain couldn't work out whether a strong dollar was good or bad for the US economy. So he called up one of his new team to ask them. Only he didn't call anyone from the Treasury or anything to do with finance. He called someone like the Secretary for the Navy. At 3am. Who was not best pleased.

Yeah, it's all running like.....a well-oiled machine Hmm

Brillig · 17/02/2017 10:56

Actually it gets better (or worse). He called Flynn

pinboard Perhaps we can get him to drink the Kool-Aid.....

saffronwblue · 17/02/2017 10:58

Just completed that survey - so badly written I think dt wrote it himself.

peaceout · 17/02/2017 10:58

Thanks Pin!
Apparently intelligent people do join religious cults, trump seems to be a kind of Messiah figure for his supporters
To onlookers he speaks gibberish, but they, the special chosen ones understand his message.

Im just trying to understand what might be going on here

Chippednailvarnishing · 17/02/2017 10:58

I can't believe you get to the end of the survey and they ask for a donation!
