I need to know his official stance - sorry if that's a contradiction from the starting gate - on whether Elvis is dead.

Wink
Lweji · 17/02/2017 12:08

I'm sure he agrees that Elvis is dead, or not, he'll decide and let you know next week, by Tuesday, or Wednesday. Or take a wild guess that the fake news media are hiding the truth.

Lweji · 17/02/2017 12:09

BTW, that Professor predicting how the DT Presidency would go was published on 17/11/2016.

He was right then, I hope he's right about impeachment. :)

"Get your TrumpNectar here, Trumpnectar, makes you immortal"
(it could come in a souvenir tankard like Butterbeer?)
(sorry, remarkably bad taste)

cozietoesie · 17/02/2017 12:11

Don't you think, though, that it's a bit of a 'Have you stopped beating your wife?' sort of question for him, Lweji? From his overall perspective that is.

ConfidentlyUnhinged · 17/02/2017 12:14

Ta-da!! I needed a name change and thank The Guardian for this.

cozietoesie · 17/02/2017 12:19

Well done, unhinged. Wink

cozietoesie · 17/02/2017 12:20

Sorry. Unhinged.

bumbleymummy · 17/02/2017 12:21

"Thank you for all of the nice statements on the Press Conference yesterday. Rush Limbaugh said one of greatest ever. Fake media not happy!"

-ugh!

CussingQuim · 17/02/2017 12:38

Well, lots of big fans of the conference replying to Fox's tweet here. I've copied some below for "balance" on the thread.

"No way anyone who actually watched the conference thought that. He very calmly destroyed them. They are crybabies."

"Loved every minute - great box office and base morale building"

"It was refreshing and awesome. Do you know how many of us want to do that on live TV. A lot right now. Good for him."

"i loved it! He has made it clear he is there for us not to make the media happy!"

"The media was expecting the President to cower at the press conference. Didn't happen!"

"how refreshing to see the media called out after 8 yrs of puff piece interviews & softball questions for Obama & HRC."

"Media is unhinged and disturbing. Was great he gave them and us time in a very busy schedule. He will not appease and bow."

"he told the truth the mainstream media is the lamestream media their worthless lies they should be unplugged"

"FANTASTIC & SPOT ON! Trump speaks to me"

"He was himself, not some high falutin pc lovin politician. The people love this."

"love it hopefully President Trump continues to communicate to the people like this and twitter I myself prefer it"

"brilliant and long overdue! He was confident, relaxed and on point! What's unhinged about that? They just won't stop! Unreal!"

"it was great to see him in his element. He even answered questions from people he didn't like."

"LOVE MY STRONG ARM LEADER-NO ONE CAN PUSH HIM AROUND-NOT THE PRESS-HE CAN HANDLE ANYONE"

"this will create a movement all over the world. People are not stupid and want fairness"

"The so-called mainstream media is unhinged and disturbing. They are jeopardizing the 1st Amendment."

"I called every freaking awesome move he explained to them they are nothing and he was nice about it"

"He hit it out of the park! No political speak, no ego, spoke from the heart!"

"I thought it was fabulous! They are the unhinged! DJT is moving like a tornado and they are in his wake!!"

(I really am curious about the number of Trump bots - some are accounts with numbers in their usernames and low-follower numbers, suggesting fake, but then that could be a real person too stepping into the grand world of social media, so how would you prove it? And as a random person, would you take time to verify or to think "ahh, x million fellow fans, they must be right".)

SafariSoGood · 17/02/2017 12:40

Apologies if this has been posted.

bettytaghetti · 17/02/2017 12:41

The man is actually genius and/or clairvoyant; he said that the following day the press would accuse him of ranting, proceeds to rant for 77 minutes and then gets to say I told you so when the press report his rant. Absolute genius!
And has he put his dentures in upside down? The bottom set of teeth seem much wider than the top set!

Perihelion · 17/02/2017 12:52

safari had a message pop up on your link saying "deceptive site ahead" ???

If the press conference was just to appeal to his fan base, he played a blinder, by keeping the Jew and the black woman till the end and being particularly cunty to them both.

CaveMum · 17/02/2017 12:52

I've been on Facebook this lunchtime and if any of you follow the Radio 2 account some of the Trump comments are utterly depressing. How can people be so blinkered?!

woman12345 · 17/02/2017 12:57

How can people be so blinkered Or paid for?
Already, the trumps may be overplaying their social media hand, wonder if this is the golden egg they really think. Don't trolls start having the same effect as adverts, and people just start to zone them out?

cozietoesie · 17/02/2017 13:01

I think it may depend on the media, woman. They're the frontline warriors right now.

PausingFlatly · 17/02/2017 13:11

I know that's a selection, CussingQuim, but I notice there's nothing at all about the factual content of the presser in those fanboi replies - they're purely about the spectacle of The Win.

BiglyBadgers · 17/02/2017 13:17

My MA was pretty niche so I won't name it, but it was basically about sub-cultures and how people within a subculture create their own self evident truths and narritives that allow them to feel part of a group. This means having a core set of ideas, many of which specifically separate the group from everyone else and often set them in opposition to one or more other groups. So their 'truth' maybe that all mainstream media is bad, tells lies and is out to get them. That liberals are all crying, intolerant hypocrites. That the military is good and that more vetting protects people. The us against them is a hugely powerful narrative and the lure of the group, or being part of something bigger and important is also something that nobody is really immune to.

Trump hits all the key points for creating a really strong subculture (I wouldn't personally say it has become a religious cult at this point, but there is scope). He is successfully maintaining the idea that even though they have won they are the underdog. He has set up immigrants, terrorists and the media as the other groups that are out to get them. The interesting thing about the media is by making them the enemy with a specific agenda that is to attack the trump group he stops his group from engaging in or accessing any credible criticism thus maintaining the narrative. He has established core beliefs and even texts (such a Breitbart).

The reason for saying all this is that when someone is a fully paid up member of a subculture whether that is a football fan, goth, Scientologist, liberal or trump supporters they are emotionally invested in that group. Their friends, family, clothes, reading and music all reflect that subculture. To reject it is a huge thing and involves rejecting that group as well as the beliefs that went with it. I think we have to accept that because of this trump will always have supporters. That when they are watching the press conference they are watching it through a different lense to us. In this respect his rambling refusal to give actual answers benefits him because whatever truth his support commits to can become what he is saying. So he says they are going to have a great tax plan, we ask what that means, his group of supporters just believe that what he means is what they mean.

I honestly think that if we stop thinking of them as misguided individuals and instead as something akin to a subcultural group we might have more success dealing with them and challenging their 'truth'.

This is all, I am going to stop rambling now Grin

cozietoesie · 17/02/2017 13:25

I don't think that that was 'rambling', Bigly.

So they ( the supporters) are tuning in already knowing and loving what they want/need to hear?

BiglyBadgers · 17/02/2017 13:31

Thank you! Exactly cozie. They are also hearing his words and understanding them through a different set of ideas and self evident truths to the ones we are. They watch it already believing that all the media is lieing and out to get him. They simply do not see them as people posing difficult but unbiased questions, the media are trying to take him down so him refusing to engage with them is the right thing to do.

woman12345 · 17/02/2017 13:35

subcultural group we might have more success dealing with them and challenging their 'truth' I agree Bigly.

PausingFlatly · 17/02/2017 13:37

Not at all rambling, and very valuable, Bigly. Though depressing.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/02/2017 13:37

I just want to scream from the highest mountain in the US; "This is not who we are. THIS IS NOT WHO WE ARE!!!!!". I want the world to know it, I want us to remember it. This election was the result of complacency on the part of Dems especially in the swing states, and a well-oiled publicity and fear machine on the part of the Reps. We thought that the good state Obama had us in would be enough to show the rank and file that it would be better to continue in the status quo. We didn't believe the hate-mongering Trump employed would truly work. Please let it be a lesson to the world of what can happen when you've become comfortable and too confident.

To an extent, our hands are tied. There's no such thing as a 'vote of no confidence' in the Constitution. It's impeachment or nothing and Scrotus has spent his entire career walking on the thin edge of legality and paying millions to stay where he wants to be. He understands making it 'worth while' for his butt-buddies to stick by him. He understands 'PR' and manipulation. The best we can really hope for is that the mid-term elections returns a Democratic super-majority to the House and/or the Senate.

I live in a very blue state so to an extent I'm a bit shielded from the worst he's trying to do (for now). But I don't think I've prayed this much since 9/11.

helzapoppin2 · 17/02/2017 13:46

Bigly, I agree with what you say. I lived in the States for a while and was surprised when I met people who really disliked Obama, and had a suspicion of Obamacare because it was akin to "socialism".
My first free visit to the doctor on my return felt like a revolutionary act!
They've also been fed the idea by Fox News that the middle class has been swindled, and their living standards eroded over the last two decades, thus breeding a sense of grievance.

yeOldeTrout · 17/02/2017 13:48

it's all him him him. Bit sick of it. he loves negative publicity, too.
