What on earth is this? (Found outside my house)

Yesterday came home to find a bit of folded-up paper wedged in a crack in the fence wall bit (pavement goes right past it). Opened it up to find 2x2p coins inside unrecognisable writing - see pic!

It could be English but in a bastardized form of very old fashioned handwriting - think medieval/early modern. Sorry - I am using a tiny screen and every time I try to magnify the image it zips around crazily so can't say for certain. Just that some of the letter formations look similar although that may be coincidence. It is also much neater than most early modern handwriting- and who would go to the trouble to learn how to write like that, so my theory is probably off.

LoupGarou · 10/02/2017 23:49

Its not Russian, or one of the dialects (I'm fluent) my first thought was either an Oriental language, or Kurdish. Odd how each line has the sort of half infinity symbols at the edges. I'm fascinated, and very creeped out!

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 10/02/2017 23:49

Funny that the words don't sit in the lines

ReapAndSow · 10/02/2017 23:49

I am really curious to know what language it is but I don't see that it's the least bit 'creepy'. 😂 It's just a bit of paper.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/02/2017 23:49

It is very neat though and goes very close to the edges of the paper which I thought was odd

dingdongdigeridoo · 10/02/2017 23:50

It does look like shorthand. I can write shorthand, but it's always quite hard to read other people's! You'd need a lot of patience to translate that.

HappyFlappy · 10/02/2017 23:51

Elvish?

Do you live in Rivendell?

brooklyn66 · 10/02/2017 23:51

It's gone. Possibly someone passing was also curious... so just got my photos. Could try and host it on imgur or something so people can look at the full picture...

Aramaic?

mygorgeousmilo · 10/02/2017 23:53

I noticed the same letter in each of the margins. The way it floats in the middle of the lines is unusual. If I was at a quiz and had to throw out an answer, I'd say Hebrew?? Don't leave it out there. I need answers Hmm

p1nkflam1ngos · 10/02/2017 23:54

Or Hebrew?

p1nkflam1ngos · 10/02/2017 23:55

Ahh too late Wink

HappyFlappy · 10/02/2017 23:56

I don't think it's Hebrew as there appear to be vowels (hard to tell, I admit)and Hebrew doesn't have vowels. Another are no diacritics. hebrew does have diacritics.

JessaHanna · 10/02/2017 23:57

I think Hebrew as well. Not meant in offensive way at all but I thought of that wall in Jerusalem at the opening of the post... The one where letters are left in the cracks of the wall.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 10/02/2017 23:59

I want 10 points if it turns out to be Hebrew Grin

p1nkflam1ngos · 11/02/2017 00:01

The fact that it was stuffed into the cracks in the wall, did remind me of people putting prayers/letters to God into the cracks of the Western/wailing wall. This is very interesting. I was supposed to going to bed, but this has captured my imagination!

TizzyDongue · 11/02/2017 00:01

Hebrew doesn't have vowels!! Well never knew that.

Thought I made out the word 'solo'.

Could be a shopping list; totalling 4p. Maybe.

ReapAndSow · 11/02/2017 00:01

I wondered about Aramaic too...but there are a lot of languages to chose from 🤔

CondensedMilkSarnies · 11/02/2017 00:02

Ooh err ! It certainly isn't English .

Systamex · 11/02/2017 00:03

Is it Georgian script?

SemiNormal · 11/02/2017 00:03

Placemarking.

dingdongdigeridoo · 11/02/2017 00:06

The more I look the more I see individual shorthand letters. What makes shorthand hard to read is that they can be joined up in different ways. Plus my shorthand is very rusty!

Here is the shorthand alphabet for reference. I see lots of Bs and Ss in there.

I showed this to DP (very clued up about a lot of languages). He mentioned Ethiopian as a possibility.

Venusflytwat · 11/02/2017 00:09

It's driving me mad! I don't think it's mirror writing, not in English anyway.

Gaaaaah....

brooklyn66 · 11/02/2017 00:09

Thanks for all the suggestions! Will have a closer look in a sec to see if it could be shorthand but I thought that had more dashes and lines and things.
Here are links to the full pictures (if it lets me...) that you should be able to scroll around more closely.
