AIBU to bag up cereal with pre-portioned sugar to stop the kids wasting it?

I mean a sandwich bag of cereal with another little bag of sugar inside? Currently I'm scraping glued on cereal and sugar off the bottoms of bowls every day! Kids are 7, 10 and 14

I'm going to be that person and ask why they need sugar on it?

Other than that, yeh why not. Or bowl with cling film over.

PizzaPlease · 09/02/2017 20:12

What kind of cereal are they eating? Do they even need the sugar? We don't use sugar on any, they tend to be sweet enough. Hide the sugar, job done, lol.

Lilaclily · 09/02/2017 20:12

One weetabix, job Done!

They like sugar and I don't mind them having it, just not in the amounts they have been

Cereal doesn't need sugar. Confused

megletthesecond · 09/02/2017 20:14

Yanbu.

I got the hump the other week and portioned off cereal because they were pouring giant bowls of the stuff. Told then to supplement with toast if they were still hungry.

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:14

One weetabix really isn't enough for a school aged child, let alone a 5'8 14 year old [baffled]

Well I think cereal is gross without sugar, and I allow it and always have done. I'm not going to stop, either. What I want to know is - is it mental to bag up the cereal into portions?

I'm one of the no sugar on cereal brigade too. If you're scraping sugar off bowl there must be quite a lot of it.

BackforGood · 09/02/2017 20:16

Agree with everyone else - YwouldBU to bag up unnecessary sugar to give to anyone, yes.

MongerTruffle · 09/02/2017 20:16

One weetabix, job Done!

The portion size on the packet is 2 biscuits, and the listed portion sizes are always underestimated.

SovietKitsch · 09/02/2017 20:17

1 weetabix?! My two year old eats 2 and she's a tiny little thing with a BMI in the bottom of the healthy range (so not fat from eating too many weetabix). She doesn't have sugar on though!

For an older child though, 1 tsp of sugar on weetabix or bran flakes never did any harm.

Sunnie1984 · 09/02/2017 20:18

If you are going to let them have sugar, then any step to reducing the amount they use is a good idea.

insancerre · 09/02/2017 20:18

Just buy cereal with added sugar

SovietKitsch · 09/02/2017 20:19

Bagging up would just be a faff though and an awful waste of plastic bags.

SaucyJack · 09/02/2017 20:19

Get smaller bowls.

ceeveebee · 09/02/2017 20:20

Most cereal is about 25% sugar anyway, why would you add more?

Lilaclily · 09/02/2017 20:22

Lol what I meant was offer weetabix albeit one or two, no need for bagging then

HermioneJeanGranger · 09/02/2017 20:22

Just get rid of the sugar - it has enough in it as it is, without you needing to add more on top!

Chloe84 · 09/02/2017 20:22

What cereal do you give them? Coco Pop, Crunchy Nut etc are so sugary that putting sugar on top would gross me out.

Portioning cereal is the least of your worries.

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:23

I don't buy the sort of cereal that has much added suagr. It's things like bran flakes, rice crispies etc. A spoonful of sugar is the reason they accept this rather than the cookie crunch stuff their peers eat

Add fruit, a sliced banana, stewed apple or whatever berries are popular with your DC will add some interest and a little sweetness.

Fluffy24 · 09/02/2017 20:24

No sugar needed!

SovietKitsch · 09/02/2017 20:24

You're right Lilac weetabix is the most easily portionable if that's a word of the cereals
