AIBU to bag up cereal with pre-portioned sugar to stop the kids wasting it?

I mean a sandwich bag of cereal with another little bag of sugar inside? Currently I'm scraping glued on cereal and sugar off the bottoms of bowls every day! Kids are 7, 10 and 14

I don't want my 7 year old making eggs in the morning and the 14 year old has his own things to do. Breakfast in this house is cereal, it's the way it has to be. Good breakfast though, I do like eggs at the weekend.

Mmm sugar on cornflakes. Crunchy and delicious.

I think bagging it up is too much work though. Also personally I do not like the sugar evenly distributed through the cereal. I like to sprinkle a little on the top, then eat for a bit, and then add some more. Otherwise it all sinks to the bottom and becomes a milky sludge.

So personally I like the tupperware boxes and sugar sachets plan.

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 21:22

The sugar sachets are looking ot be a very good idea, thank you to everyone who has suggested them

I would buy each child a tupperware type box (sistema do different coloured ones). Each evening you can put the cereal in with the sugar already on into the tub and clip it shut to stay fresh. If you did poundshop tubs, and don't mind the storage space, you could buy enough so that you can portion everything up in one go.

Somehowsomewhere · 09/02/2017 21:24

Somehow whenever anyone restricts anything on mm the "my neighbours children were never allowed chocolate and now they mug old ladies for twixes" story comes out. Just putting across an alternate view.
when I say I have no willpower I doam age not to mug old ladies grin

Yeah I see your point. The idea that 100% of people who weren't allowed treats as children now have to be air lifted out of their houses because they eat 35 Big Macs a day...

Somehowsomewhere · 09/02/2017 21:24

bold fail

Smitff · 09/02/2017 21:29

I see I've been beaten to the Tupperware suggestion. They'd be like the three bears in goldilocks!

JeNeBaguetteRien · 09/02/2017 21:30

Baking scoops and sugar sachets are the way to go OP.
I couldn't contemplate rice crispies, cornflakes or porridge without sugar. Especially porridge. Shredded wheat just feels like the chewing never stops.
I can eat bran flakes without sugar.
I cannot have fruit on cereal as I like a lot of milk, and fruit and milk together makes me go ewww.

Chamonix1 · 09/02/2017 21:30

Anyone else now eating cereal covered in sugar?
I love sugar and wheetabix

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 21:30

I could buy graduated sizes and colour coded... I like this idea

I don't have sugar on cereal as I find it sweet enough, but surely fruit on cereal is pretty vile?! I can't imagine fruit slopping around in milk.

GColdtimer · 09/02/2017 21:32

Nothing useful to add but worrying MN might implode at the utterly horrific thought that someone might put Sugar on their weetabix. Grin

GrumpetLikesCrumpets · 09/02/2017 21:32

Wouldn't it be better to teach responsible eating to your kids/teens. Have sugar if you want it, but don't over indulge because it will have an impact on your body, teeth, concentration blah blah...it's an important lesson to learn IMO. There's always temptation of sugary sweet stuff around, and you won't always there to portion up a sensible quantity.

DandelionAndBedrock · 09/02/2017 21:35

Get these and they can have a decreasing amount of sugar every morning over the week (Monday - lots...) - then you can start a smug thread about cutting your children's morning sugar intake Wink.

True. But OP isn't worried they're eating too much sugar. She's worried that they're pouring it on and wasting it. So it's not about moderation in their eating habits necessarily, it's about not pouring more than they'll actually eat.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 09/02/2017 21:36

You don't have to make a thing of it though, you just don't put any sugar on their cereal and so they don't get used to it and expect it. But I guess 14 is a bit old to try and change...

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 21:36

I could but it would require me to be there to supervise UNLESS I have portioned it already. SO while they do t=get the talk, I also want to portion for them. I do see your point

LongHardStare · 09/02/2017 21:36

Something like these so they can add milk direct and not have to pour out into another bowl. S'pose you'd need quite a lot to sort out a week's worth for three kids...

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 21:37

I'm not going to stop my children having sugar on their cereal. I'm satisfied that it is within the parameters of a healthy diet

Wow, sugar police are out in force this evening Hmm
One or two teaspoons of sugar on cereal does not make an unhealthy child! Smh

Blowninonabreeze · 09/02/2017 21:39

We set up breakfast the night before.
Everyone's breakfast is poured into bowls with a side plate over the top of it.

This isn't done for reasons of portion control, but you could do it for that reason?

(Ours only have a choice of either weetabix or porridge though which makes things easier)

BagelGoesWalking · 09/02/2017 21:56

Love this stripey pots! Surely you can prepare every evening so you'd only need 3?

Also, could you try having a few different additions, say, raspberries, sliced banana and those tiny dried pineapple or mango cubes. Just put on table and see if they're tried. Put them on the table every day for a week or two and see if they're eaten. I bet you £5 they are! I know kids are fickle but the urge to take and taste will be irresistible.

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 22:06

Bagel they're welome to get fruit out of the fridge if they want it, but they never do
