AIBU to bag up cereal with pre-portioned sugar to stop the kids wasting it?

I mean a sandwich bag of cereal with another little bag of sugar inside? Currently I'm scraping glued on cereal and sugar off the bottoms of bowls every day! Kids are 7, 10 and 14

You'd be surprised, actually Chloe84. Portioning cereal for neatness and waste reduction strikes me as sensible and I am not sugarphobic.

But by adding sugar, you're making it just as bad, surely? Confused

Foldedtshirt · 09/02/2017 20:27

I sort of get what you're doing, why not buy those multipacks of little cereals and sachets of sugar? At least with the sachets they'll be mindful of how much sugar here having with each serving.

OfDragonsDeep · 09/02/2017 20:27

I'm wth you OP, cereal without sugar isn't worth eating Grin

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:29

Actually no, Hermione Confused

The maths is quite simple

50g of cereal with 5 g of sugar is not 25% sugar. It's 10% sugar.

Demerara sugar on rice krispies. My childhood breakfast ☺ .

Soubriquet · 09/02/2017 20:30

Way to go off topic people

No yanbu to portion up the cereal

Sounds like a good idea

I don't eat cereal without sugar either.

The only cereal I add sugar too for my children is weetabix, otherwise they get it plain until the ask for it

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 09/02/2017 20:30

Maybe you could do aversion therapy and force them to eat one weetabix with 500g of sugar on it. That might put them off!

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:31

The adding fruit idea is nice, and I like fruit with cereal myself, but if I tried to put stewed apples on my 10 year old's cornflakes, he'd cry until he dehydrated

HermioneJeanGranger · 09/02/2017 20:31

That's still a lot of unnecessary sugar, but you're oviously not bothered by it.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 09/02/2017 20:33

I used to just pour from the bag of sugar onto my weetabix etc as a kid Blush

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:33

No I'm very obviously not, which is why I didn't ask. I'm confident that sugar on their cereal will not damage them, the eldest is 14 and utterly undamaged.

YABU
Cereal is pap. Give them a different breakfast and stop being so anal about portions.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/02/2017 20:34

I might be super mean, but I wash and reuse sandwich bags until they get a hole/split/have something minging inside them. The ikea ones are pretty hard wearing.

Couldn't you be in charge of administration of sugar op, or are you not there at breakfast?

LauraPalmersBodybag · 09/02/2017 20:34

Op, not sure if you realise, but you are obvs dreadful for allowing your children any sugar on it. I'm on the phone to SS now... Grin

CommunionHelp · 09/02/2017 20:37

Sorry OP, I'm another who wouldn't be encouraging more sugar. There's way too much in most people's diet and we now have the benefit of knowing how bloody awful the stuff is for us.

Your kids are old enough to know about healthy eating, but young enough to get into good eating habits. WE all know it tastes good, but adding sugar to cereal isn't a great habit.

You asked, so YABU, sorry.

WipsGlitter · 09/02/2017 20:37

I used to cover my weetabix on sugar!
Agree the sachets is a good idea.

Mrsglitterfairy · 09/02/2017 20:38

I'm with you on the sugar OP. I won't eat wheatabix or Rice Krispies, cornflakes etc without a bit of sugar on so wouldn't expect my boys to. They eat a very good, balanced diet, have great teeth and are of the correct weight so a bit of sugar isn't going to kill them. I do agree with a pp though and that maybe getting sachets of sugar would be an easier option

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:38

I have to get ready for work, so they get their own breakfast. I could just take the sugar away but this seems very unfair on the one that is sensible and as I said, I agree with them having a little sugar on an otherwise slightly dull meal

Fruitellaz · 09/02/2017 20:39

Cry until he dehydrated Grin hahaha that's so funny my 9 year old would be the same if I offered him stewed apple instead of sugar! A little spoon of sugar on some rice crispies isn't that bad is it, come on now!

TheOnlyColditz · 09/02/2017 20:39

Communion, I asked about bagging it, not giving it for the first time. My kids already have sugar and will continue to do so. Thanks for your input

OP posts:
NoCapes · 09/02/2017 20:40

Are you not there when they eat breakfast?

Somehowsomewhere · 09/02/2017 20:40

FWIW... I used to have sugar on my rice crispies. I'm now 32, always been a healthy weight and have no fillings!

Crispbutty · 09/02/2017 20:42

I had sugar on cereal as a kid. As an adult I find it sweet enough without.

If kids are active and the rest of their diet is not ok then I can't see it doing any harm.

CommunionHelp · 09/02/2017 20:42

Thanks for your input Hmm

Don't waste your PA on me, OP. It's AIBU and my reply was perfectly pleasant. It just didn't agree with you.
