Aibu re personalised number plate? Yes or no

DH has bought me one as a surprise, it's just a random letter and number followed by my initials (wasn't mega expensive)

But I'm just not sure about it! He thinks it's the best gift ever 😳 But he says we can just not register it and sell it on if I don't want it. I don't want to be ungrateful but what's the general consensus? Are they for twats or not?

I have one and it's really cool ..my late dad bought it for me and I love it ...I've never seen another one like it . They are a pain to transfer etc and costly but it's only a bit of fun isn't it And not hurting anyone ... a lot of people don't even notice them so just humour him and put it on your car . Smile

Borntoflyinfirst · 08/02/2017 17:25

I've got one. DH bought it for me. I chose it. I love it. Not really sure why anyone else would care what my number plate is!

Rainmaker1 · 08/02/2017 17:28

Not twattish at all unless you have to misspace it or it nearly spells something etc. Sounds like yours is something like X10 XXX and displayed as such perfectly acceptable. Dateless plates are also cool, the fewer numbers/letters the better. Something like XX 1 is always a winner.

Borntoflyinfirst · 08/02/2017 17:32

Mine doesn't spell anything by the way but the letters and numbers mean something to me.

ThePinkOcelot · 08/02/2017 17:36

I've got one. I like it. I haven't got a flash car or loads of money. I really don't get the vitriol they bring on MN!!

llangennith · 08/02/2017 17:36

I don't see anything wrong in them. I want one!

AprilShowers16 · 08/02/2017 17:38

For people with more money than sense - I always judge cars with personalised licence plates 😬 Sorry. I know some are cheaper but then they usually just don't make any sense to anyone else so I'm not sure what the point is.

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 08/02/2017 17:49

I feel quite entertained knowing how many judgey twats will judge me because of my plate.

I don't judge people because of surface things like that, for good or for bad, so guess what - now I'm judging you, judgey twats, and I am definitely superior. Yah :)

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 08/02/2017 17:51

Oh, also massive kudos to the couple who I drive past on the Chelsea Embankment, who have: 2B and NOT 2B.

BUT it really grinds my gears (even in an automatic car) when they park them the wrong way round. NOT 2B, 2B makes no sense, stop it!

I don't like them personally. I think it makes the owner of the car look like an attention seeking show off.

everythingis · 08/02/2017 17:56

There's a big massive Chelsea tractor type vehicle round my way with the plate '1 wkd'
Can't work out if it's 'one weekend' or 'I worked'

FaintlyBaffled · 08/02/2017 17:59

DH has one Hmm
It's a really low key one though, the first part spells his name (almost) and the second part is his initials. It's fairly inoffensive and I don't mind it so much as I know it brings him huge pleasure though the whole idea of it mystifies me if I'm honest
It's sitting in the shed at the moment though as my current elderly Land Rover is too old to display it

19lottie82 · 08/02/2017 18:03

Navy yes but there can often be 4 or 5 years between each mk of a car model, so with certain private plates you might not be able to tell the difference between an 2007 and a 2012, for example.

HeeHighls · 08/02/2017 18:05

"Blimey. I can tell how old the model is just by looking."
Which say's a lot about you.

I'm living for now on a new estate. Huge cars and ticky tacky boxes. Real money live in good housing and drive old boxes.

Katielou75 · 08/02/2017 18:06

GoesDown- Jimmy Tarbuck definitely had COM1C (my uni halls were next door to his house!). Call me twattish as I have one, although it's very subtle and hasn't got my name on but the name of my home town. Most people wouldn't realise it's personalised (it was fairly cheap too). I realise I'm in a minority

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/02/2017 18:12

They would go in my room 101.
I can't understand why people pay for them when cars are sold with a number plate already included.
However the Lord mayor of Bristol has the registration number AE1 on his official car. It goes with the job. AE used to be included on the registration plates of all new cars registered in Bristol in the days before the letters were randomly generated. (Jeez I know some random c&@p)

F1GI · 08/02/2017 18:18

I personally would fine it embarrassing. But I don't mind if other people want to have personalised plates. I think it also makes you "recognisable" on the road. Which is bizarre and a bit creepy.

The local drug baron had, "9knob" on his Rolls before the police surrounded his house with firearms. He spent 18 years inside.

minesapintofwine · 08/02/2017 18:31

I like them! In fact I want one Smile

Rainmaker1 · 08/02/2017 18:37

I guess it's actually sat on a retention cert?

HughJarss · 08/02/2017 18:44

Also there's one near me that says Y1DS. Totally fucking unacceptable. (A spurs reference and a whole other AIBU, come to think of it).
