I find myself a bit terrified to think of what could happen if the court actually rules in his favour on the Muslim ban. Expect a flurry of EOs to be fired off, stripping many of their rights.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 15:55

Pausing Yes, one would think they could learn something from the nightmare in the US right now. Hmm

In the local paper today, Italian businesswoman transiting via USA en route for London, gets told to go through customs at Atlanta and check in again fir London flight. Upon checking her passport they see stamps for Iran and Sudan, plus Libya (there have traditionally been trade links Italy and Libia since Mussolini annexed it as a colony so this is not unusual), so they arrest her hold her for hours then interrogate her for a few more hours. When she is finally released to board her flight back to Europe and after cancelling her ESTA, she gets presented with a bill for $2850 for "wasting police time" Hmm
If you multiply that x however many people were held or deported that's one hell of a campaign fund for the next election...

Republicans want the Queen to abdicate after her Sapphire Jubilee"

Well, they may want her to, but I'm not sure she'd be particularly inclined to listen to a group who by definition want rid of the monarchy altogether. I'd file this under either "non-news" or "the pope-is-Catholic-news".

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 16:01

I just think it's in poor taste for it to be in the news at all. She's rarely set a foot wrong in over 65 years, and despite the wealth, it's certainly not an easy life (IMO). I certainly wouldn't want the job!! I think it's insulting.

Personally I think getting rid of the monarchy would be foolish, but that's just my opinion.

Donald Trump cannot avoid conflict with Russia. Doing so will inevitably lead to war. A must-read by Robert Kagan.

I don't want to get into a debate about the monarchy on this thread, but I am befuddled by the assertion that trump in anyway shows that a monarchy is better than a republic. Yes this is an example of when a republic can go wrong, but I assure you there are plenty of examples of when monarchy can go wrong as well.

I can't for the life of me work out what monarchists think makes the queen so special that she can't be replaced by an elected representative with exactly the same powers and responsibilities. At least they wouldnt be there solely because they happened to be born into a particular family with the belief they have a god-given right to rule.

Destinysdaughter · 06/02/2017 16:07

Does the Queen actually have any political power these days?

Deejoda · 06/02/2017 16:08

I agree Ginger! I think the monarchy is one of the best British traditions. Yep m0stly, non-news. She is staying

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 16:11

I didn't think the Queen really had much by way of political power. I think in a diplomatic role, they can be helpful. I think for tourism they can be good. I think for national traditions and identity, it can set us apart from some other countries. I don't want to see the UK morph into the US. And it just sometimes seems like it slowly is.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 16:12

destiny not really. If Theresa May started rounding up immigrants the Queen wouldn't be able to do a damn thing to stop it. She might look a bit fretful in their weekly meeting (or there is a possibility she might be all for it), but any interference in politics would cause an uproar, quit rightly. She is just a hugely expensive tourist attraction and rubber stamper.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 16:14

I am clearly the only republican on the thread today Grin

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 16:15

I have my own views on the Monarchy which I personally don't want to explore on here.

However - it is a fascinating debate in general - who actually runs a country and what power do they have? Who holds them in check, what rules guide them and who has the ultimate say?

It's relevant at the moment - given what's happening with Brexit. I like to think that our elected representatives in Parliament have the last word and they have to rely on getting their bills through Parliament.

It is a fascinating lesson in democracy.

You're not - I am a very strong Republican.

I believe in an effective Constitution and a non political Head of State whose role is to ensure an elected Government holds true to the Constitution.

We have seen what UK politicians think of the courts and our unwritten Constitution recently.

Phew!

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 16:19

What does happen if a Monarch REFUSES to sign a bill that has been passed by Government?

Who has power in our country? Who is ultimately in charge?

OP posts:
amispartacus · 06/02/2017 16:20

And President Trump is a VERY good example of how 1 person should not have ultimate power and the last word.

And he shows how important a clearly drafted Constitution is.

Oh come on!
The queen and her hangers on don't give a crap about the likes of you and me.
AND she's German 😂
Think if all the odious things thatcher did.
Did the queen ever express any misgivings? At all?
Sigh.
2012 seems such a long time ago doesn't it?
I remember a year of real national pride, positivity and enjoyment.
Wtf happended!?

Clnz4fun · 06/02/2017 16:22

The monarchy heavily relies on public approval and have to seem on the right side at all times. As for pm's/parliament and what not once they have the job title they of course have to their job well but knowing full well they can't please everyone and will almost certainly ruin people lives with their choices, their time Is short lived so they can shape the country how they please knowing this.

My bigly opinion and bestest placemat.

Clnz4fun · 06/02/2017 16:23

Placemark* although my place mats are just great, it's true.
