I'd count as a cautious republican myself - I was just pointing out that "republicans want the queen to abdicate" is something of a tautology, and hence not really newsworthy. Newsworthy would be "and what's more they think they have the electoral support to force her to do it."

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 16:23

Although I am a republican I will admit to great admiration for her when she shook the hand of Martin macguiness.
That must have made her feel physically ill, but she did it.
I'm imagining the same wrt trump

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 16:25

The monarchy heavily relies on public approval and have to seem on the right side at all times.

I think generally they rely on not taking any side at any time. The queen has perfected the art of saying and doing absolutely nothing. It is quite impressive in its way.

The Oaths of Office:

President:

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:—"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

US Officer Oath:

I, ___, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

UK Officer Oath:

The Royal Navy is the oldest of the three services, and it was established by the sovereign's prerogative. For that reason, recruits have never been required to swear allegiance, but they do sign an attestation or engagement form on entry. The same applies to the Royal Marines.

For the rest of the armed forces, including the British Army and the Royal Air Force, the oath includes swearing to God "that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors and that I will, as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully defend Her Majesty"

UK MPs

I (name of Member) swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.

Interesting...who are people loyal to?

And the Queen's Coronation Oath:

Archbishop. Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the Peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon, and of your Possessions and the other Territories to any of them belonging or pertaining, according to their respective laws and customs?

Queen. I solemnly promise so to do.

Archbishop. Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgements?

Queen. I will.

Archbishop. Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel?

Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law?

Will you maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England?

And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of England, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?

Queen. All this I promise to do.

Thank goodness for those humorous moments...

Hope that's the Alec Baldwin one (brilliant!) for anyone who hasn't seen it

Otherwise, the fear and depression and desperation could just dominate us all.

Anyway...back to America

Man shot dead in supermarket...

There's a very good episode of West Wing (yes I know I reference TWW a lot Grin) where Toby is trying to help write a Constitution for Belarus. He points out that the US system is not the best model, with too much power vested in one person.

This YouTube video cuts together the key points spread across the episode:

He's still gunnin for the NY Times

'Donald J. Trump ‏*@realDonaldTrump*
More
The failing @nytimes writes total fiction concerning me. They have gotten it wrong for two years, and now are making up stories & sources!'

If I was an American I'd be taking out a subscription....I do hope they get bigly increased revenue as a result of his continued condemnation :o

FlyMeToTheMoonLiterally · 06/02/2017 16:39

Haven't read all on here so will catch up :(

But just putting this out there as gave me some solace

FlyMeToTheMoonLiterally · 06/02/2017 16:40

That was supposed to be a smiley face! Lol :)

Formerpigwrestler9 · 06/02/2017 16:44

I wonder what he means here
'Some FAKE NEWS media, in order to marginalize, lies!'

I think he is suggesting that some news media lie about him in order to marginalize him?

Why is his sentence construction so bad?

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 16:45

I don't get what he is doing attacking the NY Times - who is he aiming his message at?

OP posts:
merrymouse · 06/02/2017 16:45

re: NY Times, I think he is getting desperate.

His core supporters couldn't care less what the NY Times says, and everyone else will be checking out the NY Times.

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 16:46

Has he invested in the NY Times?

Lweji · 06/02/2017 16:46

I need to take a sabbatical just to keep up with the threads.

Maybe in Iran or Sudan (not really).

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 16:46

There's a call to boycott Budweiser - made in America - after the Superbowl ads.

How will that help American jobs?

Exactly - it's like Farage telling his supporters the BBC is biased...

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 16:49

You know how he was supposed to be manipulating the media with distracting tweets?

I think it might be the other way round.

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 16:51

I thought he was supposed to be doing defence stuff today. Do you think he's gone to the toilet with his phone?

Former - we're in the UK and have online subs to nyt. It's a very well written paper actually!

CaveMum · 06/02/2017 16:57

It was linked to on a previous post, but there are comparisons between Trump and his attacks on the NY Times and Hitler's attacks on the Munich Post in the 1930s.

IrenetheQuaint · 06/02/2017 16:57

After all those years being dull, timid and conformist, while loosing money hand over fist, the NY Times has suddenly hit paydirt Grin

Lweji · 06/02/2017 16:57

From that americablog:

"Trump cares DEEPLY about polls. He wants to be popular, and he wants the polls to reflect it. Trump flipped out on Twitter again this morning over the polls. And it’s not because, as he says, he thinks the polls are “fake news.” He freaks out because he thinks the polls are real, and a true reflection of his unpopularity. And narcissist that he is, Trump “must” be popular"

I fully agree with this and have mentioned something similar on the other thread.
He's desperate for approval.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 17:03

Cave Yes, I posted that. I agree - it syncs with the Trump attack on the NYT, I think.

As far as the Queen goes, do you think if Farage ever got in power, we'd hear a timely queenly voice shout "Off with his head!!" ?? Grin
