This CNN rvideor eport is interesting - no one discussed the 'ban'. It seems to be all about the economy. It's from Kentucky.

money.cnn.com/2017/02/06/news/economy/donald-trump-beattyville-kentucky/index.html?sr=twCNN020617donald-trump-beattyville-kentucky0249PMVODtopLink&linkId=34168327

I hope that he does not let these people down who have hope in him - global economics is so so complicated and he hasn't really mentioned that.

A lot of people have invested in him with hope. Just like with Brexit.

Here is a nice article from Vox which is relevant to our discussion this morning on the last thread about whether protest makes a difference. Yes, it does not turn back time and we should not be complacent, but we should recognise that people have made a difference by coming out and making their voices heard.

The big lesson of Trump's first 2 weeks: resistance works

Step 1 in taking Bannon down is giving him more press - Trump won't like it

Just keep pushing those buttons...

I don't think Trump would even bother to do a bad poll. He just makes stuff up.

There's the kind of stuff Tim Harford can debunk on More or Less, and then there's complete fantasy.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 15:08

I remember that one woman. It is scary and makes you realise how easy it would be to start quietly rounding people up. Just tell them they have to check in at an existing centre and not let them go again. Tell everyone they are having further vetting or that there is an issue with their paperwork. Law abiding migrants have nothing to fear therefore everyone kept is by default not law abiding.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 15:09

Here is some info on the USA immigration detention centres ginger. They have lots!

Even Dr Who episode reminded people about 10 years ago of how 'camps' all starts again. Lovely Bernard Cribbins in this short bit.

OMG! On the detention centre facts. Also I have always been so conscious of the fact that off-land American black sites like Guantanamo Bay where all sorts of illegal acts are being perpetrated by America...

woman12345 · 06/02/2017 15:16

It's war time behaviour.
In WW2 my immigrant grandfather, had to report every fortnight to local police station (in Sunderland, think he was the last immigrant there! Grin).
In US there was controversy over camps for Japanese civilians.
1984 text, had a state of 'permanent war' maintained for civilian control.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 15:16

Bigly Wow. I had no idea. The police dept I worked for didn't stress over those that were there illegally, as many of them were there to work - and to be fair, if they brought in every one that was in the country illegally, they'd not get anything else done!

PausingFlatly · 06/02/2017 15:17

Yep, our fallacious argument form for today is Not Even Wrong
rationalwiki.org/wiki/Not_even_wrong

A correct argument or explanation is easy to spot; it may look like this:
2 + 2 = 4

A wrong argument has an incorrect conclusion, but is presented in such a way that we can evaluate it, like so:
2 + 2 = 22

The above two examples can be shown to be right and wrong; they at least make enough sense for us to spot where the error is, or the logic leading to the error. Something that is not even wrong is usually so far out of the ballpark or so far from reality that it is, quite simply, flabbergastingly irrelevant. For example [see image].

The media isn't even attempting to portray him in a good light anymore (not that I'm overly concerned, I'll admit).

Not sure if that list of adverts includes the full 84 Lumber one. Worth a watch

Interesting that the "Bowling Green massacre" seems like it was not a "mistake" but a deliberate attempt to mislead the American public.

The British republican ideal scares me at the moment.

It's really hard coming up with a constitution that works well - the UK is not starting from a blank sheet and can't simply reproduce another country's model (and even if it could there's no foolproof system, as these threads testify).

It's very easy to get wrong.

I'm afraid of well-meaning, idealistic republicans clamouring to dispense with the monarchy... without expending the rather greater amount of time and effort required to agree on a good replacement system.
