AIBU to think double barrel surnames all sound stupid and there's just no need for it?

I realise I will offend all you double barrellers
But why?
Do you realise it's a mouthful and makes you look like you're trying to be some kind of lord or lady?
What's wrong with one surname?
When I marry my OH i'lol take his surname. I won't just add it to mine and cause an unnecessarly long name to have to say/write/spell.

I think they make you look like a pleb.

EmeraldIsland · 05/02/2017 21:15

Why do you let this take up any of your headspace, out of interest?

Er, I can't say it does really. I read the op, I responded with my opinion...i'll likely have forgotten it within a few minutes Grin

Every time I hear a double barrel, I get an automatic flash thought of 'tit' through the back of my mind. Because I think it looks silly.

Anyway, it's beyond my control. But obviously i'm not keen.

spankhurst · 05/02/2017 21:16

I don't care what people call themselves, but have always wondered what happens when double surnamed people marry. Triple names? Double double names?

littlebillie · 05/02/2017 21:16

This is such a first world thread GrinGrin

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2017 21:16

Emerald, as it bothers you so, why don't you ask them?

The thing I'm curious about is why this seems to matter so much to those who have chosen not to double barrel, and so I'm asking - why? Do you feel somehow denigrated or threatened by it? Do you dislike deviation from the traditional? Why is it only double barrelled names, not other 'ugly' ones that cause you to post repeatedly on Mumsnet?

It's quite baffling. Why do people care?

OpenYourEyesAndSee · 05/02/2017 21:17

But the people with double-barrelled surnames didn't necessarily have any say in the matter. It's ridiculous to think 'tit' purely on the basis of someone's name.

reuset · 05/02/2017 21:21

reuset, my shameful error... bad apostrophe placement. It's the pleb in me

You said it... Grin

Ah. Whenever I hear someone express such weird prejudices without shame I think 'ignorant arse', so there we are. Smile

Hopefully the fact my children are double-barrelled will cause people like you to steer clear of them. A useful weeding out of those unable to question their own motivations and reactions - extra benefit of double barreling, which I hadn't anticipated. Yay us!

EmeraldIsland · 05/02/2017 21:23

Jassy it doesn't particularly bother me at all. I even have a friend with a double barrelled name Shock. I don't think we've even ever discussed it. I reserve the right to, internally, think it looks bloody stupid though.

It's quite baffling. Why do people care?

Christ. Responding on a MN thread hardly proves you care a huge amount about something. Why respond to someone about the next door neighbour's dog barking, or about the fucking penguin barriers outside some randoms house 500 miles away from where you are? You could ask 'but why would you care '? about anything on here you reply to. Yet plenty of us do respond...I doubt it impacts most people's actual daily thoughts or lives though.

spankhurst, at risk of wheeling out a tired MN trope, can I suggest you RTFT? This has been addressed quite a few times.

spankhurst · 05/02/2017 21:24

Sorry Jassy. Forgive me, please.

"it's not a 'sustainable' naming method or your dgc would end up with 8 surnames..."

Try telling that in Spain or Latin America.

Wow. Clearly you're touchy about it. If you're happy in your choices, good for you, be happy in them. What difference does it make to you what 'ignorant arses' like me think?

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2017 21:27

Emerald, I was asking more widely than you - a lot of people including the OP seem to feel quite strongly about how other people name themselves and their children, to the point of some quite nasty name-calling. Really quite different to 'NEVER GOOGLE PENGUIN BOLLARDS ENJOYABLE PARKING DRAMA KLAXON.'

And you did just refer to me and/or my kids as 'tits' and 'silly' so I hope you'll give me a little latitude for saying that the fact you have any kind of derogatory automatic reaction to the format of someone's name is fucking weird.

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2017 21:30

Hang on, I thought posts on MN weren't an indicator of strength of feeling? Wink I wonder how often you refer to other people's kids as as 'tits' and expect them just to say 'ah, never mind, won't bother challenging that even though it's pretty idiotic'.

Hands up. Anyone who thinks someone is a 'tit' based on the format of their name does sound like an arse, or thick, and someone I'd rather my kids weren't around.

Playdoughinthecarpet · 05/02/2017 21:31

DH and I have surnames in the top 10 most common names. They sound so fantastically ridiculous together am now kicking myself for not double barreling. (Occasionally pretend I am but then piss myself laughing.)

reuset · 05/02/2017 21:34

This often happens with name threads. The Baby Names section, for example, can get very fraught at times Grin

Monkeyface45 · 05/02/2017 21:35

What happens when all the double barrelled people start marrying and double barrelling further... quadruple barrelled surname. Automatic presumption in society is a child from unmarried parents.

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/02/2017 21:35

I agree Jassy. It just screams ignorance.

I do sometimes wonder though if attacks on db names are simply a cover for envy of others choices.

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2017 21:37

Too true! At least no one' broken out 'chav' on this thread... yet. Grin

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/02/2017 21:37

Monkey thats bollocks.. Rtft. If anything theres a growing presumption of professional married middle class.

Ellle · 05/02/2017 21:37

it's not a 'sustainable' naming method or your dgc would end up with 8 surnames...

But how is it different to having two people getting married each one bringing a surname? You could say it is not a "sustainable" method because the children would end up with two surnames! That's not what usually happens in English speaking countries, isn't it? Out of the two surnames, one gets dropped (usually the mother's).

Well, that's the same principle for the naming method in Spanish speaking countries. Two people get married, each one brings 2 surnames, but the children don't end up with four. Two surnames get dropped (the mother's).

EmeraldIsland · 05/02/2017 21:39

The silliest thing of all is when the only response to someone disagreeing with you or disliking the appearance of DB names is 'Ooooh you must be jealous '. I mean, really? It's really difficult to understand why not everyone is the same as you and that many other people may not be fussed on DB names?

I'm not hugely keen on hyphenated first names either but that doesn't mean i'm jealous of the people who have Lily-May's and so on Grin.

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2017 21:40

weeps quietly, concedes defeat at believing in the unreasonable idea that people might read the thread before commenting.

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2017 21:41

So, Emerald, moment of self-reflection and self-examination. Why do you think it looks silly? Why do you have any reaction at all?

VioletRoar · 05/02/2017 21:41

I took my husbands db name. Haven't really given it much thought tbh.
