Price increase at Aldi?

I did my weekly shop in Aldi today, and was gobsmacked when I got to the checkout. About£12 more than normal! No special buys. The only difference was, I had to get frozen veggies, as there were hardly any fresh. I was going to buy fresh salmon, but it was£4.99! Has anyone else noticed a steady increase in the price?

What percentage increase is that? Could well be simply due to the exchange rate differences Sad

Same here! It came to £64 and I only had £54 for the week, hence going to Aldi.

I feel that Lidl is cheaper - I'm sure the opposite was true a couple of years ago.

I don't have an Aldi or Lidl nearby so use Asda and was going to buy a pack of salmon containing 3 fillets- before Christmas it was around £3.70 today it was £5.48 I think def over £5 and it isn't priced on weight

Food is going up quite rapidly, so even the budget supermarkets will be increasing their prices. A combination of poor exchange rates and trouble with supply. I think Spanish imports are particularly hard hit. Did they have any courgettes or iceberg lettuce?

Aldi import a lot of their products from continental Europe, so it could be to do with the exchange rate?

A lot of Aldi and Lidl prices seam to have gone up post Christmas. Stuff that was under a pound is now £1.09. Things like basmati i'm sure was £1.45 a bag and now it was something like £1.80.

No lettuce, broccoli, celery or green beans. And a scrum over the veg freezer. Gutted, I bloody love Aldi!

Veg shortage... it's all over the news.

Specifically on lettuce, broccoli etc

No lettuce, broccoli, celery or green beans.

You'll struggle to find them regardless of which supermarket you go to.

Sainsburys is awful. I'm talking between 10-30p increase on almost everything I normally shop for.

Mince up by 20p, spring onions up by 10p, cucumber up by 10p, chicken breasts up by 30p.

It all adds up.

I'm aware of the veg shortage, and bought frozen instead. I was just surprised at the price increase, much more than last week

Spring onions up by 10p Shock.

I don't buy veg from Aldi anyway. They're always tasteless (or even rotting inside - peppers!)

Petrol has gone up significantly, too.

I know this is not food, but I found out yesterday that Halfords, who used to fit windscreen wipers for free, is now charging £4 to fit.

I got all my green veg in Aldi no problem. Broccoli, spinach, kale, mangetout etc.

But yes, salmon fillet prices have rocketed.

I too have noticed a lot of things in Sainsburys inctmreasing so it wouldn't surprise me if this was across the board.

Dh tends to do the Aldi shop so I don't keep tabs on that as much.

Farmed salmon is more expensive because there is a disease that has affected alot of the farms and production is lower, similar problems with the veg in the supply of it.

LemonyFresh · 04/02/2017 21:14

Yes we noticed that today. The big cartons of juice have gone up quite a bit and there was not much veg or salad.

Ours were charging £1.19 for lettuces that were 35p a couple of weeks ago Shock I know there's a shortage, but that seemed pretty shocking.

The word you are looking for is Brexit ....

the UK voted to leave the EU free market
the pound dropped 18%
prices will rise by around 12%

once exit is complete and customs rules kick in, prices will rise by another 15%

entirely predicted

Very true, it is only going to get more expensive. Better get used to eating seasonal produce. It's too cold for salads anyway.

Asda is not bad price wise.

I'm still working my way Through stuff to find out what the quality is like but aldi quality and taste is pretty awful so it can't be amy worse..

Have been pleasantly surprised so far with regards to how much I've bought fir the money.
