Price increase at Aldi?

onlyslightlyinterested · 04/02/2017 20:21

I did my weekly shop in Aldi today, and was gobsmacked when I got to the checkout. About£12 more than normal! No special buys. The only difference was, I had to get frozen veggies, as there were hardly any fresh. I was going to buy fresh salmon, but it was£4.99! Has anyone else noticed a steady increase in the price?

The UK has imported labour to pick veg for over 70 years

We may have done. But in my area c30 years ago they didn't; it was all the locals, in particular local mums and their kids.

FlouncingInAWinterWonderland · 06/02/2017 20:26

I used to Strawberry pick along with other locals 30ish years ago. It was for pocket money.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/02/2017 20:27

Me too flouncing.

There's a sort of perfect inflationary storm hitting, with several factors all converging on us at the same time.

There is a weather-related issue with fresh vegetables grown in Southern Europe, where the crop has been virtually wiped out. That accounts for the shortages of lettuce and courgettes.

The fall in the value of sterling is also starting to work through to shop prices, as is the rising distribution costs associated with more expensive diesel.

But by far the biggest contributor is that for a number of years now the supermarkets have been engaged in a monumental price war and have been keeping prices artificially low in order to maintain market share. They simply won't do that any more, so the price war is unravelling and years of falling food prices are being rapidly reversed.

SerialReJoiner · 06/02/2017 23:48

Time to start a veg patch I think.

DameVanillaSugar · 07/02/2017 07:02

Yes serial - and go back to seasonal eating. We shouldn't even a eating coirgettes and salad in February!

Delilah37 · 07/02/2017 07:07

One word - brexit!

What were people thinking? đŸ˜•

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/02/2017 07:13

They weren't. That's the problem.

Bct23 · 07/02/2017 07:22

Ironically those hardest hit will almost certainly have been the ones voting for this!

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/02/2017 07:28

Yes bct

My parents shop at aldi and lidl. Refuse to pay the prices of any other supermarket. They rave all the he time about the products. My father being someone who would complain or find fault with the best ever grass fed organic steak cooked to perfection yet think literal utter shite from aldi is the dogs bollocks.

He voted for this. It's going to he quite satisfying to see him justify what is revolting shit, at a now higher price.

I can't wait to see if they stick it out to avoid looking like they were talking shit all along or decide that now they are paying so much more for the stuff that they will go somewhere else and buy something much better for a few pennies more.

Waitingforgodot · 07/02/2017 07:28

What were they thinking? I seriously don't get it.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2017 07:30

literal utter shite from aldi

It isn't utter shit though.

DameVanillaSugar · 07/02/2017 07:32

It annoys me that Theresa May says th its like "the will of the people" when lots of people had different reasons to vote for Brexit which added up to 52% yet 48% voted votes for the same reason.

So, it's February. Time to dig up your gardens and start planting the spring veggies.

ScarletChina · 07/02/2017 07:37

Yes u

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/02/2017 07:38

Some of the stuff they buy is. The pizzas fir instance soggy based bland crap. And the ketchup and salad cream. Even the chicken tastes funny

They do in fact buy alot of utter shite

TizzyDongue · 07/02/2017 07:38

Very fixated with Aldi Gileswithachainsaw aren't you? Is it connected to your deep dislike your father, and because past paternal criticism?

TheElementsSong · 07/02/2017 07:43

Tizzy WTF? Confused

MalletsMallets · 07/02/2017 07:45

I thought it was me not being as strict with my list. My Lidl shop has gone from about £16 a week to £28

With butter and milk, the prices were so low a few years ago that dairy farmers cut back production or closed. There's more demand from China now which has put interest and demand up but supply is still low so it's now 10p more (to the farmer) than it was a few years ago.

Eolian · 07/02/2017 07:46

Confused I find Aldi ketchup just as good as any other brand. And I roasted a lovely free range chicken from Aldi on Sunday. Their bottom range pizzas are crap, but the 'Specially Selected' sourdough ones are lovely. Sure, Aldi sells some crap stuff, but so do all the other supermarkets. They just charge more for it. People are weird about brands and brand loyalty imo.

TheNaze73 · 07/02/2017 07:47

Delilah Well said. Great idea voting to get out of the EU.... Biscuit

HolditFinger · 07/02/2017 07:48

I've noticed it lately too. I've been an Aldi shopper for the last two years, but lately have swapped to Asda and am spending about the same as I did in Aldi. Plus I'm not getting shoved in the aisles or being subjected to people loading their shopping on behind me while I'm still trying to unload my trolley.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/02/2017 08:08

Yeah I have been pleasantly surprised with asda. The free click and collect thing is very handy too.

The fruit and veg is lasting well also.

Frazzled2207 · 07/02/2017 09:27

I've noticed it is not as cheap as it was a few months ago.

noeffingidea · 07/02/2017 09:43

Giles you can buy 'shite' at all the supermarkets. Aldi and Lidls still have plenty of 'real food'. People have a choice as to what they put in their trollies.
Haven't noticed any price increases in my Aldi yet, but I certainly have in Sainsburys.
I've started to use Poundland a little bit more for some food - baked beans, tinned tomatoes, coffee, bacon, etc. You have to keep your head on in there though.

INeedANameChange · 07/02/2017 09:44

In the last three weeks, I've been unable to buy spinach, rocket, bagged salad or courgettes (at various times).

My local Aldi veg shelf was virtually empty for a full week!!

My shop hasn't been quite so cheap lately either Sad

It's frustrating because all of the food that's in shortage forms part of my weekly shop! It's starting to feel like feckin wartime rations (when I did manage to buy courgettes from Tesco I was rationed to a certain weight) Grin
