Price increase at Aldi?

I did my weekly shop in Aldi today, and was gobsmacked when I got to the checkout. About£12 more than normal! No special buys. The only difference was, I had to get frozen veggies, as there were hardly any fresh. I was going to buy fresh salmon, but it was£4.99! Has anyone else noticed a steady increase in the price?

I'm no great economist but my understanding is some overheads of production are fixed and some not so if we take the £6 Welsh jar of honey.

The producer, possibly one person, has their personal value (biggest overhead), cost to clean and maintain the hives, original set up costs etc.

Those overheads are spread over the number of jars produced. The number of jars produced is probably in the main determined by the number that can be sold.

So lets say overheads are £1500 and jars sold are 250 to get our £6/ jar.

If production doubles the labour and overhead costs might only increase by 20% so the overhead of £1500 becomes an overhead of £1800 and there are 500 jars available so it works out at £3.60/ jar. Just through there being more demand.

The reducing price may then lead to a greater demand because let's face it 60p to buy British is an easier decision than £3 and it would have a knock on.

Production then ups through demand to 750 jars, overheads go up another 20% so £1800 becomes £2160 which when divided by 750 jars makes British made £2.88/ jar and suddenly it makes economic sense to buy British.

Have you heard of Brexit? Everything is getting more expensive.

I sometimes wonder, reading threads like this, if anyone ever watches the news and/or reads a newspaper? Hmm

The impact of Brexit on prices has been discussed for months.

And the poor weather in Spain and its impact on the availability of salad and vegetables ditto.

Apart from the fact abbs that people don't want to.

This was inevitable. It will get worse.

BIWI I am often shocked when seemingly well educated friends of mine wave their hands dismissively and claim that they have no time to watch the news or read the papers. I mean fgs, even just turn on R4 in the car if you really haven't got time.

Agree BIWI people need to start taking an interest in current affairs.

I admit I've almost given up on Radio 4
(DH has retuned the radio to R4extra)
as their obsession with "balance" in the run up to June just gave Farridge loads of airtime and did not make him justify any of his pipe dreams.

I read websites (I try to look across the whole spectrum)
to ascertain what is actually going on.

All of my friends voted remain.
Most of the people I deal with for work voted Leave.

I've definitely noticed a price increase normally a big Aldi shop would cost me between £45-£55 but nowadays it seems to be more likely £65-£75

There's definitely some effect from the Spanish veg shortage, it's not just the exchange rate. I'm in Germany and broccoli and courgette are eyewateringly expensive right now. 6 euro a kilo for courgette!

I went to Aldi just before payday to save myself the usual £30 I save when I shop there. It came in more or less on par with Tesco, I was quite shocked and them embarrassed as had to put some stuff back as didn't have enough money on me or in the bank.

Bread was up from 75p to 85p I noticed today. Mine was £40-something today and it was normally high 30s. I did buy a fair bit of meat today though.

My local Aldi had broccoli on Friday - I bought some. I think you may well be buying more in weight with the frozen stuff and, of course, convenience always costs a premium. Salmon has gone up in price everywhere - there are problems with a parasitic worm which is reducing supply. That was on BBC Breakfast a couple of weeks go. Aldi is still cheaper than so many other supermarkets. To paraphrase, 'we never had it so good' in terms of food prices as an EU member. Food will increase in cost when we leave.

And don't forget the impact of inflation on the cost of your weekly shop.

I agree. My normal shop is £64 or thereabouts. Last time it was £78. So on Thursday I went to Morrison's for the usual shop and it was £81. For £3 price difference, I'd rather do Morrison's as they have a wider range of organic food.

My green grocer was saying the box of tomatoes that he normally sells retail for a fiver is now £9.50 to buy wholesale....

Mmm probably not.

I'm afraid a lot of people's wages will not keep up with food prices increases. Imported food will become so expensive that British good will be the cheaper option... but it still might be unaffordable!

It's not only food IME... I usually buy shampoo, deodorant etc from Home Bargains as I find they are extortionate elsewhere. Guess what, Home Bargains have put their prices up, too!

Can't say we weren't warned!

The picking jobs are not even advertised anymore they just go straight for the foreign Labour market when that opportunity is lost they will have to look closer to home
