Price increase at Aldi?

I did my weekly shop in Aldi today, and was gobsmacked when I got to the checkout. About£12 more than normal! No special buys. The only difference was, I had to get frozen veggies, as there were hardly any fresh. I was going to buy fresh salmon, but it was£4.99! Has anyone else noticed a steady increase in the price?

Butter has gone up too. It was around 80p before Christmas and last week I paid £1.20 for the same own brand.

Milk production worldwide is lower than the same time last year and milk prices, thankfully, have increased, since the price we have been paid for our milk over the last twelve months is unsustainable. That will be why your butter has gone up.

Bear in mind too that food production is heavily subsidised and when EU subsidies in the UK end in 2020, if not before, food prices are likely to increase again.

The costs to them have increased, so obviously the cost to you will as well. No point changing supermarkets though, it will be the same in all of them.

Just done an online Tesco shop and loads of the fresh produce that we often buy is unavailable. It seems to be across the board.

I think the news claims it to be less than ideal weather conditions in countries like Spain? That is possibly true, but the post referendum slump of the pound must also be having an effect by now and as tariffs are slapped on when we leave the EU things will only get worse because we import so much of our produce from the EU.

Brexit was such a wonderful idea (not).

I am not a massive fan of Aldi fruit and vegetables as I have found the quality to be too hit or miss, though like them for other things.

However, all supermarkets are affected by this.

I wonder how the discounters will cope when the tariffs go on as we leave the EU? Will their prices rise to be more in line with the other chains? I suspect they will.

Prices have definitely gone up at Aldi but it's still way cheaper for me than Tesco.

I have abandoned Aldi as the shelf life was too hit and miss and I realised that the reason why some stuff was cheaper is that you got a smaller pack size compared to the sainsburys/tesco version so some of the saving was 'fake'.

I use a combo of Lidl, Sainsburys and Waitrose now - spend about £60 per week for a family of 4 but the quality is really good.

I have 3 ALDIs that I shop at, one near DP's work, and two in our home town. All 3 have not had spinach in for the past 3 weeks! I use 3-4 bags of spinach a week so it's actually been a real pain
Is this shortage why?

The pass through of price increases will be worst at Lidl and Aldi as their margins are so low already. The others should be able to absorb a bit of it but only because their prices were higher to begin with.

Their smoked salmon has also increased (as had Lidl salmon). It was £3.29 last I looked and before Christmas it was £2.79. I've seen people pick it up, see the price and put it back. I often had it for my lunch but don't anymore as the price hike was just too much.

That's an interesting point! I was just thinking that maybe they had gone up more because they might import more things direct from the continent.

I remember discussing the increase in butter prices on here, even before Christmas (very regular baker). I stopped baking entirely not long after that discussion. Just had to buy a couple of pats yesterday for "bake off" at work this week and I deliberately didn't look at the price .

I went to Aldi yesterday, got a good shop for £83 but I think Lidl (where I usually shop) is cheaper. Plus no bakery at Aldi

One reason for the price increases is customers refusal to use the bloody packing benches! They are there to get staff off the checkouts and back on to the shop floor quicker therefore minimising staff costs and boosting productivity, all of which goes towards making the products cheaper.
