I thought he came across rather well on Desert Island disks the other day, but AIBU to be glad that DB has been exposed?

I've always regarded the Beckhams as a textbook example of much that's wrong with our celeb-culture, accumulating vast wealth and renown on the coat-tails of very mediocre talent.

Now it seems the charitable work was all in aid of securing a knighthood.

"derxa

Cara I'm sure he's devastated about your opinion of him grin"

He is actually capable of understanding what an opinion is!? Doubt it...

CaraAspen · 04/02/2017 15:08

"BakeOffBiscuits

He wants to be a "Sir" so he can use the title for more sponsorship deals.

He'll be putting "Sir David" on everything from football boots to underpants.hmm"

Think he might be waiting for a while...

CaraAspen · 04/02/2017 15:09

"Whydidwedoit4times

cara what a nasty sneering post. Many people use expressions like that and it can be colloquial doesn't make them thick. "

It is not colloquial, fgs, it is ungrammatical.

MercyMyJewels · 04/02/2017 15:22

He IS as thick as fuck - have you ever listened to him? I think his kids draft his tats.

Cara - did you notice that the DM didn't "sic" that one but did the following error. Grin

derxa · 04/02/2017 15:25

It is not colloquial, fgs, it is ungrammatical. It is grammatical. He just doesn't use your grammar.

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/02/2017 15:26

.I would of..." That is quite enough evidence for me

And that isn't simplistic? ha ha.

The whole 'Beckham is thick' thing is just another way of people saying 'he is common and common people are stupid'

I have yet to see any evidence that he is stupid. That idea seems to based on jokes and impressions of him. Anyway, he has never claimed to be a great intellect has he?

His intelligence doesn't seem high or low enough to invite comment. I have heard him on the radio and seen him on tv and he just seems like a normal person in that respect.

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/02/2017 15:28

derxa you are right. He is from round here. Its how people from round here talk.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 15:59

Sorry, just an aside. But people like foster carers, nurses, volunteers etc do get honours. If you believe you know someone ordinary who does something exceptional the answer is to simply nominate them. I wish more people would. There are a lot of unsung people doing great things in our communities not being recognised simply because nobody's nominated them.

KingMortificadosMistress · 04/02/2017 15:59

derxa you are right. He is from round here. Its how people from round here talk

So what? Doesn't magically make it grammatical does it? Any more than plenty of people saying "pacifically" instead of "specfically" makes that correct.

Correct grammar is objective; it's not a weight of numbers game.

I have to say though "I would of" is the very least of David Beckham's intellectual crimes. Viz:

"I definitely want Brooklyn to be christened, but I don't know into what religion yet"

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 16:04

Sorry, but I tend to think that people who only think intelligence can be measured in academic terms are actually being guilty of being rather thick themselves.

Plenty of people who aren't book clever are intelligent, astute, talented and able to make a success of themselves.

In my early days as a secretary my (very successful) boss used to say 'I pay you to have good grammar so I don't have to'.

KingMortificadosMistress · 04/02/2017 16:05

If you believe you know someone ordinary who does something exceptional the answer is to simply nominate them. I wish more people would

I was involved in nominating a woman who volunteered for a charity for over 10 years, had a v. high powered job but did this week in week out even when super busy and reformed the whole organisation. Nada. Jack shit. Not even a Queen's medal

They say that after a nomination has been made if nothing heard in 3 years then they won't get one and that time has long since passed.

I have to say it made me really disillusioned with the whole process. I was pretty disgusted to be honest. This was someone who genuinely put a lot of voluntary time back into the community and was not "just doing their job".

My involvement with that nomination meant that every year when I see all these celebs get OBEs+ for basically just succeeding in their job it makes me really angry.

This was a woman who really deserved public recognition.

KingMortificadosMistress · 04/02/2017 16:10

I tend to think that people who only think intelligence can be measured in academic terms are actually being guilty of being rather thick themselves.

I agree with you. That was my point. There is tons of other evidence about the lack of Beckham intellectual ability - including things he has done not just said.

LA Galaxy link above case in point. Also remember when he was lying on the ground during that world cup game and he kicked out at the footballer leading to a red card him being sent off and the loss of the game.

This is not evidence of cleverness.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 16:17

That's shit. I was involved with a nomination for a Brownie leader who did get one. But I suspect a lot of it is box ticking stuff. I write bids etc for public sector stuff in my day to day job so I sort of know what they're looking for when filling in those sort of forms which might be why ours succeeded when some people's don't based not on merit but just on whether people know how to 'tick the right boxes' in statements etc. And of course celebrities will employ people who do while a volunteer won't and will just have amateurs doing their best.

So you're right, whole system needs looking at. Although, in defence of the current system...he never did get that knighthood did he?

cowgirlsareforever · 04/02/2017 16:17

He said on Desert Island Discs that he's OK about his children doing Burberry shoots, making records etc because 'they're in the public eye anyway.' He hasn't the sense to realize that he could've avoided them being in the public eye. Other 'celebrities' have managed it.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 16:20

Kate Moss has. And she's one of the most photo'd women in the world. Only seen one picture of her daughter when she got married. Ditto Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani, Elton John.

KingMortificadosMistress · 04/02/2017 16:22

BillSykesDog - could I message you privately about your post above about "box ticking" please?

Sunnymeg · 04/02/2017 16:22

DB was a good footballer, who scored a few great goals, and was good at set pieces, but what catapulted him into superstardom was his relationship with Victoria, who at the time he started dating her, was one of the most famous women on the planet. I think he has been very fortunate to have the opportunities her influence has brought him. There are far far better players, who are revered in footballing circles, but whose fame hasn't transferred into the greater public consciousness.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 16:23

Yes go ahead.

derxa · 04/02/2017 16:35

Plenty of people who aren't book clever are intelligent, astute, talented and able to make a success of themselves.
I agree. MN is obsessed with academic achievement and ... grammar (even when they don't understand much about grammar at all).

Werkzallhourz · 04/02/2017 16:37

My involvement with that nomination meant that every year when I see all these celebs get OBEs+ for basically just succeeding in their job it makes me really angry.

This is what narks me. An honour can mean a lot to someone whose not famous, not wealthy, but who puts a lot of work into their local community.

I feel like this trend of "celebrity honours" devalues and makes a mockery of something that is often the highlight of a community worker's life in that they were formally recognised by the state for their contribution to civic life. It's also why I get a bit pissed off when you hear about celebs turning them down.

I know quite a few ordinary people who got them for community work and everyone was so proud of them and they were delighted and quite tearful. These are people who felt they'd actually achieved something of note in their lives by receiving an honour for their work. And then you get some celeb or media commentator publicly going on about how shit they are or how they turned one down because of whatever reason. Angry.

Werkzallhourz · 04/02/2017 16:37

who is, not whose ... damn phone.

LullabelleBates · 04/02/2017 16:45

There is just too much shocking stuff about David Beckham that makes what you've read today is mild.

Bestthingever · 04/02/2017 16:50

I think wait and see how it unfolds. If it is made up, I would expect him to take legal action because it is destroying his image. I did love the comment about Katherine Jenkins getting an OBE for singing at the f$%king rugby! So true.

derxa · 04/02/2017 17:08

There is just too much shocking stuff about David Beckham that makes what you've read today is mild. What's that then?

ManaFleet · 04/02/2017 17:10

Nope. Don't believe it.
