BREAKING: French prosecutor: The Louvre Museum attacker, shot by French troops, is in a life-threatening condition.

Has anyone seen anything that actually gives any particulars about the attacker?

Lweji · 03/02/2017 20:18

And the regulations are being 'relaxed' - the ones introduced by Obama.

What's worse is that I've seen analyses of the current regulations that suggested that, as they stand now, a major crisis is already looming.

May, last year: e.g. seekingalpha.com/article/3973968-bank-regulation-will-create-next-financial-crisis

Now imagine relaxing them further! Shock

woman12345 · 03/02/2017 20:19

This may not go down well but here goes. Is there an element of this crock of shite who is
1 continuing several Obama policies
2 doing some of what Nixon and Reagan did in the 1970s and 80s
3 being apparently chaotic but really strategic
4 transfixing us with his petulance and evil fixers
5 dominating us with his media obsession
6 but some of this horror is that it is just in our faces 24/7 except for if you get up really early to avoid the first stream of twitter hate?

In 1984 Winston Smith was not allowed to switch off his spy screen thing in his room and you weren't allowed to miss the 2 minutes of hate every day.

I wonder if,like Obama with his deliberate, thoughtful ways, we could take back control, by thinking through strategic responses .

I wonder if responding to twitter goading and policy goading, which seems to be his style, could be more nuanced or even absent, biding time to have a more powerful strategic response. He's like an evil pantomime villain, and he and Conway and Spicer seem to be choreographing responses too. This administration is so evil that it brings an almost reflux reaction, and that too is deliberately set up.

This article in WP, which I think is real gives thoughts on what worked and didn't work in Uraguay.
www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2017/01/27/in-venezuela-we-couldnt-stop-chavez-dont-make-the-same-mistakes-we-did/?utm_term=.a4b7a8c9aa99
Building bridges with the so called enemy seemed to be key.

On the other hand, run for the hills!

exactly Ginger, not the first one of these that has puzzled me.

Guardian article on astroturfing

To be honest, I'm not sure there's a hard and fast way of telling the difference between an astroturfer and a single-issue nutter when you read their stuff. There's certain turns of phrase which if you hang around in any given field for long enough you start to pick up which make you suspicious (the sort of "hmm, I heard the head of comms at British American Tobacco use almost exactly those words in a newspaper interview" last week sort of thing), but for the most part the dangerous thing is you can't tell the difference easily between paid propagandists and people who've bought into the ideology wholesale.

They do tend to have strategies you'll see over and over again - the Gish Gallop (which I see from this article has also been recently renamed the Trump Tirade) is one, where you throw so many weak arguments/questions at your opponent that you don't give them a chance to start to argue back.

If you have the time, Merchants of Doubt is a fantastic book (covers paid lobbying and astroturfing on a whole range of issues from big tobacco to climate change).

M0stlyHet · 03/02/2017 20:23

Yes, I'd noticed the fact that no details about the Paris attacker have been released, beyond the claim that he allegedly shouted Allah akbar.

amispartacus · 03/02/2017 20:23

The propaganda from Spicer at the start is interesting. Did CJ do that (My White House reference is CJ)

For light relief.

Wow lots of food for thought there! My head is spinning with the amount of stuff happening right now, almost too much to process.

So, need a bit of comedy to avoid going mad - just seen on Twitter:

"Are we all changing our avatars for Je Suis Bowling Green or what" 😀

GingerIvy · 03/02/2017 20:26

Germany has joined in. I've yet to watch it. Germany Second. Grin

I thought claig was for real but that made it more depressing really.

Lweji · 03/02/2017 20:30

I'm surprised Germany actually wants to go second.

Surely they'd be aiming for first.

cozietoesie · 03/02/2017 20:30

I don't know, woman. Just don't know. Maybe this whole situation is so off-the-wall that people will cling onto any theory which seems to them 'explaining'. Which is 'reassuring' in some way. I don't know that though.

woman12345 · 03/02/2017 20:32

I'm going to practise gish galloping on the cat right now. thanks MOstly and just read the sample of Merchants of Doubt. The University of East Anglia here, was one of the first groups of scientists I heard of who were undermined for global warming research. Stalin used to do it too.
ginger Grin thanks

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 03/02/2017 20:32

I liked the Lithuania third one ("because we all know winning the bronze medal match is less depressing than losing the final...")

Lweji · 03/02/2017 20:33

"The best book. Best seller. Steve Bannon absolutely loves it" Actual LOL.

They actually used Hitler too.

cozietoesie · 03/02/2017 20:33

I like that attitude! Smile

GingerIvy · 03/02/2017 20:34

Okay, the Germany one was great. LOVED it. (and loved the Trump voice. hahahahahaa)

I've not seen the Lithuania one... must see it.

On a related but sideways step with these.... he surely must see these. He MUST know about them. Do you think it enrages him? Embarrasses him? They're clearly poking fun at him..... Or is the rhino hide well and truly in place and he thinks it's an honour or something?

cozietoesie · 03/02/2017 20:35

Sorry. Lithuania's attitude.

GingerIvy · 03/02/2017 20:35

I liked the part about the big red button and this is what Germany looks like. Grin

cozietoesie · 03/02/2017 20:36

Why would he even know about them? Smile

Lweji · 03/02/2017 20:37

"Hosted two world wars. The best wars. We totally won them. Anyone who says differently is FAKE NEWS."

And people say Germans don't have a sense of humour. LIES. FAKE NEWS.
