Evening everyone... It's good to discover you all discussing things here, I don't have to sit worrying at home alone any more...

I've been reading the Rogue POTUS Staff twitter account which is interesting and frightening. And The Guardian. I'm trying not to cherry pick the things from all over the place that frighten me... The media has got to get its house in order and the only remotely positive thing about Trump is that I hope we will get a serious, involved, reliable media back.

That thing about talking up crazy ultra right wing policies and then doing something slightly less bat shit crazy to get it through without opposition was a trick that David Blunkett (for overseas posters - a home office minister in a recent Labour government about ten years ago) did with great aplomb. I hate that.

There is so much going on that it's truly exhausting. I'm going to have to prioritise to divide and conquer.

So in addition to talking, is there any plan for action on here? Is anyone doing anything? Does anyone intend on going to anti Trump visit Britain march in London on the 20th? I think I am.

Also if anyone is facilitating these threads, can I ask if it is possible to provide a link forward to the next thread on the last page and a link back to the previous thread on the first page of each thread, so we can navigate more easily?

Thanks

Dance

On that Pence tweet, the Republicans like to mention Lincoln every time someone says anything about African Americans and/or civil rights because Lincoln was a Republican. In fact, they love to refer to themselves as the party of Lincoln.

And that earth-shaking rumble you hear coming from Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois . . . .

squishysquirmy · 02/02/2017 22:42

"but there's no radical gay terrorism"
If you look deeply enough into the murky depths of far right Christian fundamentalism, I am sure you will find some twits who claim that simply being gay constitutes radical gay terrorism.

amispartacus · 02/02/2017 22:44

One thing about these threads that I have learnt a hell of a lot about what's going on - do we know more than May?

I would be great on Pointless now - name US Congress people..

I would love to know how the removal of background checks for people buying guns is in any way consistent with Trump's frequently-expressed concern for the safety of Americans.

If a Christian fundamentalist attacks gay people using a legally acquired weapon, that would be a real mind fuck for Trump.

Maybe Trump could answer that? People need to ask questions which contradict his ideas.

Ooh they are discussing the proposed ban of Trump's visit to UK on QT!

I have been in bed with flu (am happy to blame it on Trump atm), and just have to say that this and previous threads have provided me with chicken soup sort of wholesome-ness. I'll gladly go back to lurking, reading and applauding the newsbreakers and veteran commenters here.

Megatherium · 02/02/2017 22:50

I strongly recommend people on this thread go to see the film "Denial". It's the one about the David Irving libel trial, and it's strangely timely both in relation to Irving's racism and his attitude to inconvenient facts. One section was particularly striking - it was at a point when Irving seemed to have won an exchange about the existence of holes in the roof of the gas chamber at Auschwitz. It was pointed out that Irving's technique is to find just one fact which he can use to cast doubt on the Holocaust and focus solely on that to the exclusion of the mass of evidence overwhelmingly proving it did happen. As has been pointed out elsewhere on here, that's more or less Trump's technique; he'll tell lies constantly, but if occasionally some fact crops up which seems to support him he'll focus ruthlessly on that to the exclusion of all else.

We can only hope that Trump goes the same way as Irving, and as quickly as possible.

mega

I've read the book, it's very good. Yes, Trump is a narcissist and delusional. Therefore, he takes a grain of truth and constructs a whole reality around it. And then insists that it's real, it's the truth and so on. As in his obsession with his inauguration crowd, as in obsession with fraudulent votes. The worrying thing is that he believes his own lies and would probably argue that black is white or the sky is green.
