The discrimination towards muslims, or apparent muslims, entering the US has been rife for years.
I have a friend who is UK born & bred, but her first name is, apparently, a muslim name. She had no idea, but she travels regularly to the US with her DH, as he has business over there. Every Single Time she was singled out for a 'random' search and held and questioned for up to 10 hours each time. Her DH took to going through booking flights and going through immigration separately because he couldn't afford to miss the business meetings. Each time she was 'allowed to go on her way' she would be reunited with her luggage to find that it had been gone through with a fine tooth comb, and all of her toiletries would have been squeezed out and destroyed. Eventually one of the airline staff disclosed that she was on a watch list due to her 'Arabic' first name. I don't want to out her, but trust me, this is a name everyone will have heard of, and there are well known English TV presenters with the same name. They had to hire a US lawyer to make contact with the relevant US Department (Homeland Security??) to go through enhanced vetting and get removed from the watch list.
I have another friend who is also born & bred in the UK, but whose Dad was originally from the Yemen, so not only does he have a Yemeni surname (although UK passport), but he is also swarthy skinned. They brought their kids to Disneyland and he was held for over 12 hours. As a family they vowed years ago that they would never, ever again visit the US.
